(Poem) spirit by Jhilimil Breckenridge

i know when spirit stills

it is when the eagle perches,

tearing flesh held in one claw

the crow patiently waiting

i know when spirit stills

it is when clouds are mottled cream

painted onto the blue mulmul kurta

that is the sky

i know when spirit stills

it is when a kachnaar blossom

wafts in the morning breeze

with all the time in the world

i know when spirit stills

when each beat of my heart

answers to every movement

in creation,

when the air shifts, changes, beats,

and i am witness

this witnessing is stilling

and i know when spirit stills

mulmul: muslin, hindi

kachnaar: orchid like indian bloom that grows on trees
