Itzpapalotl is a fearsome skeletal being with jaguar talons and obsidian tipped wings. In addition to Mexico, black obsidian glass is the gift of other volcano goddesses at Catalhuyuk in Anatolia and Pele in Hawaii. Itzpapalotl is the patroness of women who died in childbirth and goddess of the realm of paradise, Tamoanchan. She is a tzitzimime ancestor spirit.
