(Equinox poem) I Thought The Morning Crowed by Phibby Venable with art by Maria Arias

Alex Arias roosterfinabcI thought the morning crowed
a long sad repetition
from behind the hills
but it later became a rooster –
so much smaller than his sound
I was born in the Spring
A small, brown radio played
on a corner shelf – my mother
danced her way through breakfast
And I was in love with green
The bluish air, and dawn flowers
In love with the gossamer
floating on water –
I was the Spring Equinox stretching
equal lengths of day and night
Watching leaves leap out
like excellent advice that grew wise
And jubilant – for no reason
other than a love of life
I stored a fresh calm
in the lining of my heart
It hid the broken chaos
that tried to start too young
and the heavy parts
of rich soil turning
fragile rootage to the light
