Early modern humans
stepped over bear bones,
finding a niche for each
of the red ochre bear skulls
painted by hand, eye
sockets turned outward
in the Mother Bear cave,
den of the Great Goddess.
Put a bear skin cape
over the figurine, clay
doll broken beside the fire.
Safe from the bears
in winter, they worship
this Mother of Animals.
