A woman, fearing death,
hears sirens in the night,
sees dolphins leap in
candle flames, and cries
why
are they called sirens,
are they not a warning,
can there be seduction
in this danger, how can
death be beautiful?
(A wheel, far from any road,
a slug on its rim, a snail
on its axis. A raven that
flies into a woman’s face,
screaming. Three footfalls
in a darkened wood.
The moment before, fear,
then abandonment of fear,
then hope, and then
abandonment of hope,
and then
the shadow of the future.)
We stare into the flame,
the fearful one and I, dimly
aware of deep movement,
dimly aware of what
rises towards us,
watching for it,
the whale that now
draws near, the future
barnacled across its back
and rising towards us,
the whale
that now
draws
near –
