(Poem & Art) The Unbecoming by Arlene Bailey

What if we looked to the

ancient Being that resides

within us?

What if we listened to Her

voice and purpose for being?

Listened to the Ancients and

their stories of our karmic legacy?

Perhaps it is not about becoming

more than we already are.

Perhaps it’s about un-becoming,

stripping away all the enculturated

descriptives as we return to the

raw, sweet nakedness of our Soul.

She knows, but we cannot hear

Her for all the outside noise.

Sometimes though when we’re

really still and all is silent,

we can hear her as she speaks,

knowing her hunger for the real

is primal and essential for life.

For like the wolf stalking her prey,

Anything…

Everything…

Else

Is

Death.

  1. Pegi, thank you so much. More and more I feel this “unbecoming” shadowing me as I shift and change… well, everything. It is essential I feel for our existence – both as an individual and a planet. Blessings, Arlene

  2. This is wonderful, thank you so much Arlene Bailey. “The Unbecoming” echoes with the path of uncolonization that we need to embrace, to return to the eternal values of the matriarchal soul and our intra existence with the wild, both within and without. How marvelous that an entire philosophy can be summed up in one short poem!
