(S/HE V2 N1 Book Review) Małgorzata Oleszkiewicz-Peralba’s Mythology and Symbolism of Eurasia and Indigenous Americas: Manifestations in Artifacts and Rituals, Reviewed by Lisa R. Skura

[This content is from S/HE: An International Journal of Goddess Studies (V2 N1, 2023) Its online edition and paperback are available at Mago Bookstore.] I am lucky enough to live in a place with both the deer and elk, the subject matter of chapter one in this book, and so this text immediately won my heart and became a touchstone in my life. As a mythologist, artist, weaver, spinner, and goddess scholar, as well as a devotee of Marija Gimbutas, I believe this book is brilliant and I am grateful for the scholarship that Dr. Małgorzata Oleszkiewicz-Peralba offers us. Oleszkiewicz-Peralba continues the work of Gimbutas by demonstrating how the ancient symbolism of goddess religions has survived in the folk-art of many cultures around the world. Oleszkiewicz-Peralba helps expand our worldview back to one of wholeness rather than our current restrictive androcentric worldview. Oleszkiewicz-Peralba not only clarifies the work of Gimbutas, but also brings our attention to other places these symbolisms are hidden, including headdresses, hairdos, embroidery, and in the weaving of Kilim rugs. I have books about the embroidery motifs of goddesses, as well as books about the symbolism of Kilims, but Oleszkiewicz-Peralba has electrified and resurrected the significance of these symbols in a profound way for me. The symbols seemingly lost to an androcentric world view are being recovered to reclaim the sacredness of the female body, the earth, the animals, the cosmos, as well as each other. We are currently paying the price for thousands of years of devaluing and suppressing the divine feminine, the female body, the earth, the animals, the plants, as well as fresh water and air that is life. This text by Oleszkiewicz-Peralba is also significant since many male scholars, who are still considered the cornerstones of academic study, have insisted that women have contributed nothing to culture. Sigmund Freud for example, claimed that women braiding their own pubic hairs was the only thing that women contributed to culture. Oleszkiewicz-Peralba counters this male biased scholarship, by pointing out in chapter four how the symbols of life have survived in the symbols used in weaving and embroidery. Oleszkiewicz-Peralba also discusses the survival of the apron as an empowering symbol of flowering female sexuality in this chapter. Although the apron might seem a humble and simple item of clothing, it is a powerful symbol of female empowerment and agency. It gives new meaning to the ubiquitous hero myths of our androcentric culture, that we now find everywhere, which usually involves the defeat of the non-obedient monstrous feminine by the hero in epic literature. Both Hercules and Perseus are said to kill Amazon queens and steal their belts, which many scholars interpret as the defeat of matriarchal tribes and the ascent of patriarchy. This same misogyny is being demonstrated in the United States by a corrupted Supreme Court that has just taken the aprons and belts from half the population of the United States. The male hero’s journey popularized by Joseph Campbell is the dominant framework of “success and progress” used in our modern world, an androcentric journey that promotes the individual at the expense of the collective. This narcissism justifies the use of violence to suppress female bodies, suppress divine feminine power, as well as to rape the earth at whatever cost, and to gain power even if this means nuclear annihilation. It is ironic that this text uses a multitude of examples of ancient and modern Ukrainian art to demonstrate the survival of the symbols of life and female empowerment, yet even now Vladimir Putin wages war and imposes his will against the peaceful country of Ukraine. Oleszkiewicz-Peralba even touches on the use of psychedelic plants in chapter one and discusses the mythology of the female shaman, the deer, the connection to the peyote plant, as well as the Ayahuasca plant as a loving serpent mother that embraces the children of the earth. In my dissertation I discuss how male ethnobotanists create the neologism entheogen, which assumes all psychedelic plants facilitate a male divine experience, even when evidence suggests that for tens of thousands of years, the divine female was worshipped. I use the term entheagen, which changes the male divine experience to a female divine experience. Oleszkiewicz-Peralba’s scholarship is an important contribution to recognizing and resurrecting the ancient symbols that once valued the female body and the earth. True immortality is accepting life and death as natural cycles rather than trying to defeat death, dominate women’s bodies, and/or conquering the world. The equidistant cross symbol of the great cosmic weaver symbolizes equality for all people, as well as the valuing of the female body and the earth. Centuries of male ideology of “transcending” the earth has resulted in billionaires competing to demonstrate their prowess by launching grotesque phallic rocket ships for no reason except to practice leaving this planet after it becomes inhabitable. We must reclaim all the appropriated symbols of the divine feminine and this text is a great place to start the journey. Lisa R. Skura Dr. Lisa R. Finnish Goddess Mythology and the Golden Woman: Climate Change, Earth-based Indigenous knowledge and the Gift Kaarina Kailo 2018 Introduction Literature and the stereotyping of culture establish complete control over truth and knowledge. It finally replaces troops and guns as the relevant tool of colonization. (Ward Churchill 1992, 2) The creative arts play a crucial role in this expression of Earth Love. Ecofeminst arts … [are] essential catalysts of change that (re)connect us with nature and spirit. (Diamond & Orenstein 1989, 279) For the worst toxins are not those of external pollution but those generated by humanity’s wrong thinking. (Forest 2008, 237) Since time immemorial myths have been used to unite and mobilize people. They have served to create “imaginary communities” and to help create a sense of ethnocultural identity. Most importantly, mythic tales have served to transmit Traditional Ecological Knowledge and ecosocially sustainable lifeways.[1] Myths are often rooted in rituals and have a core of historical truth although they have a way of blurring the distinctions between fact and fiction. Terra Feminarum, the mysterious Northern Land of Women, has intrigued scholars for centuries; after the Roman historian Tacitus (98 CE), the Roman historian, Ohthere of Hålogaland (a Viking Age Norwegian seafarer living about (890 CE), and Adam von Bremen (a German medieval chronicler) mentioned a land east of Sweden that was not just ruled by women, as in having an occasional queen, but very vividly run by women. They referred to such a geographical site of powerful woman leaders, perhaps even Amazons, living in what is now Finland and maybe Estonia with its Naissaar (Island of Women). In the Finnish national epic, Kalevala, Elias Lönnrot also refers to Pohjola, the North Land or farm, as the “man-eating village.” He pits the Kalevala heroes of the South against the “Harlot of the North”, Louhi, the matriarch who is the epic’s strong female leader and shaman.While going deeply into the mystery of this Land of Women is the topic of my next book, in this context I look upon the Terra Feminarum as the hypothetical matrix of Northern pre-Christian–and likely more woman-positive–cultures. I see this Land as a convergence zone extending across Scandinavia, Finland, Samiland and the lands of Russian Finno-Ugric people. The traces in legends and myths, toponyms and folk art of Great Mothers or Goddesses of the North from Gullveig and Freyja to the Golden Woman (Zolataja Baba) suggest that the matriarchal cultures of Old Europe, researched by Lithuanian archeologist Marija Gimbutas and her followers need not be limited to the South-Eastern borders of Europe. The evidence I have gathered so far regarding the more egalitarian and woman-friendly North is, however, not as such the focus of this book. Because Finnish Guardian Spirits and other female figures of the pagan folk beliefs and worldview have not received the attention they deserve, in this book I focus on making them visible, introducing the many Great Mothers and Spirits that have been neglected, even censored by Christian patriarchy. However, the focus is not alone on the figures themselves but on the traces of a Finnish Traditional Ecological Knowledge system and culture that they can be associated with. Today no serious scholar, activist, politician or citizen dares to question the reality of climate change. More and more evidence has been amassed regarding its dramatic impact. The South is shivering while the North is experiencing heat waves. Exceptional storms, weather constellations and natural phenomena are beginning to convince even the staunchest resisters of global warming that the ecological crisis is a tangible reality. The World Tree is shaking and some fear that the mythic acopalypse, the biblical flood, the Ragnarök of Norse sagas is actually about to come true. While all cultures have known myths of impending end-of-the-world catastrophies, today’s planetary situation is undeniably more serious than that of any other generation. Is an ancient mythical prophecy of the apocalypse in the making? In another book project, I focus on the causes of the climate change of which Canadian Woman Studies/cahiers de la femme also published a special issue (2017). The newsletter of the Planetary Movement For Mother Earth sent the following up-date on the less recognized roots of climate change: “The moment of truth has come! Weakened ozone layer lets cosmic radiation through. The earthly life dies. Proof provided, reasons clarified.” Von Werlhof sums up the recent findings in the report as follows: “There is no possibility of mistakes since April 4th, 2018. Beyond all official claims and speculation about increasing CO2 emissions as a threat to earth´s life, there is now proof to the contrary … a part of the atmosphere, the famous and unique Blue of the planet Earth … is in the process of dissolution. The atmosphere thus no longer offers the protection for which it was created in the course of earthly life…. Already … 250 million years ago nearly all life on earth became extinct, because nothing grew any more. The so-called ’Great Dying’ had then probably the same reason (Gabbattis 2018) (Von Werlhof April 13th, 2018). Today, Wehrlhof continues, ”the problem consists not only in the existence of the infamous ozone holes over the Antarctic and over the Arctic, too, but also in that, contrary to expectations, they make no attempt to close themselves (Titze 2018). The ozone layer as such has in the meantime generally become very weak (Dönges 2017). This means that it lets the cosmic radiation pass also far from the ozone holes themselves. That this is possible, has always been denied“.[2] It may seem absurd, after such news, to move on to discussing the role of stories in bringing about a change of heart regarding the future of the planet. I believe, however, that we need to act simultaneously on many levels of consciousness-raising and of ecopolitical action. (Essay 1) Future of Identity: Reclaiming the Northern Pagan Tradition by Jillian Burnett

Art by Jillian Burnett A thousand years of cultural genocide has only ignitied the needs for self-actualization, personal mastery, community, acknowledgement of ancestry, and cultural identity. Born from the ashes of failed indoctrination by Christianity and dominant cultural hegemony, the sleepers are now awake. Today’s heathens look to the past to establish the present. The social, cultural and political realms inherited by today’s post-industrial economic sphere and monolithic modernism express that tradition is dead. Those linear thinking, empirically driven, state-sanctioned, quantifiably-standardized objective orthodoxy ways—are rejected. Today’s Northern pagan looks to reclaim all significance of their cultural ethos—shaping modern life. More than ever folk look to their past to establish the present. The first half of this literary endeavor will explore the aspects of causes and effects of the coming together of the Northern pagans. The second half will consider the societal repercussions. This awakening first affirms the need to regain what was lost. As pagans of today look around at their suburban lots with singularly isolating domiciles, the single most apparent thing is collective isolation; there is a stark lack of community. Continuing to perceive their immediate state they may also notice Christianity as the dominant religion and worldview. This is not just a matter of evangelism—the typical establishment of thought and social hierarchy comes with it; from capitalism to patriarchy. Everything from social policy, maternity leave and seniority in hirings are baked into the economic fabric of the workplace. Even though paganism can be seen as a ‘religion,’ it is a body politic. The individual members are a network—loosely connected. And though there commonly are no shrines nor temples as of yet, the days of church going society are over. The power of the Christian faith is waning. As such a new collective is needed for the gathering of those connected by ancestry, belief, and commonality in goal. The like-minded northern pagans may come together with at the very least a shared sense of identity which can translate into solidarity. For the northern tradition, there is a resurgence in the Anglo-Saxon tradition as well as Norse paganism. This connects people to their ancestral mythology, symbolism and traditions. That will include their ancient songs, clothing, recipes and beliefs from pre-Christian times. The exoteric culture that the folk can embody through living practices day-today. At the esoteric core of these practices is the engagement of the pantheon of the northern pagan cosmology and their gods, the Aesir and Vanir. As the folk bring their awareness and attention to their own culture and ways of seeing the world, the elements of their cosmology will feed into all systems, economic, social, and political; society will reshape. Northern pagans are everywhere; their borders are not just linguistic-economic domains. As history conveys, people will shift to their margin of comfort. As this movement grows, people will band together politically, voting in blocks, and making collective economic decisions. Along with revaluing cultural identity comes true connection with roots and ancestral ideas of what the world is, what phenomena signifies, and what traditions are meaningful and worth continuing. This heritage often aligns with political action to preserve and protect the customs that reflect their values. Not all pagans have precisely the same traditions; differences in views include schism along the topics of separatism, populism, globalism versus xenophobic regressive nationalism. The folk are diverse in their views but it is undeniable that in today’s global-macro monolithic culture, we have the rebirth of the tribe. Yet each tribe has the power to self-identify as well as preserve their own values and norms. Representing the small folk, or the common man, the political ideologies of populism can seem to support main street and not wall street, as is famously said. If northern pagans express their values politically and gain representation, there is a chance that global policies will become less expansionist and outwardly focused. Already there are plenty of protectionist laws surrounding immigration and visa requirements. Isolationism as a foreign policy can be seen as a way to avoid external conflict as well as focus domestically. Brexit is a great example of the conflicting virtues of balancing external and internal focus on governance, while considering trade, foreign policy and immigration. Every people and country face these questions of how much interaction they want with people who are not of their place or tribe. Looking at the Hávamál for advice, the Asgardians conquered the nine worlds with war. They made marriage and political alliances, but had hostages of family to keep peace. If the northern pagans follow the old ways, imperialism and the perpetual war fronts will continue. Some countries dollow that already. The Grimnismal and Voluspa speak of war victories, and further wars after that. Further into cosmology, Valhalla is the place where even the slain are chosen to fight again in the final battle of Ragnarok. The stories of Othinn conquering the nine worlds and of Viking expansion express one sort of solution. But also within the heart of the eddas are stories of Loki’s wiles, where he used cleverness rather than violence to solve problems. Loki’s solutions were often creative and tricky at once, finding an opening in places where things didn’t make sense or where an obvious solution wasn’t found. Northern pagans can embrace philosophies of peace and non-violence following the solutions that don’t involve a fight. Introspection and clever thinking are definitely part of conflict resolution needed in today’s times, contrasting the conquest through warfare also spoken of in the Eddas. An interesting equilibrium within the web of collective consciousness will have to be struck as the new northern pagan tribe moves to balance virtues old and new. The folk will move away from modern western thinking and come back to their own. Frustration due to lack of advocacy and representation of small groups can foment social disruptions, as was seen in the arab spring or occupy wall street or black lives matter movements. (Essay) Re-Storying Goddess: A PaGaian Cosmology by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

Re-Storying Goddess for me means re-storing a sense of “She” to the Cosmos, restoring female sacrality[1] … to the small particular self to begin with, to other, and to all-that-is: re-storing “Her” as Language – image and word – for the Creative Dynamic that unfolds the Universe. Most of the religious stories that most on the globe grew up with at this time, did not have the female in Careful mind. Most world religions still specifically story the female as problematic to creation or enlightenment or whatever, or at least secondary: though some are clever enough to attempt to disguise it. The term “God” still commonly invokes the “Face of Ultimate Reality”, the Absolute, and the term “Goddess” still overwhelmingly invokes a mere mythological entity.
(Essay 1) We Need to Talk Frankly About Sexual Abuse in Paganism by Francesca Tronetti, Ph.D.

Talking about sexual abuse of children or adults is hard. And it’s especially hard when the abuse occurs in a minority group, whether from leaders or members of the group. We don’t ever want to discuss abusers in marginalized groups out of fear that it will be used against the group. Talking about sexual abuse committed by members of minority groups is taboo. Women, children, and men have been told to keep quiet. Discussing abuse would reflect badly on their community and could be used to justify over policing and violence. Many books have been written by women of color about their experiences. They were told to keep their abuse quiet because the rape of women and children fed into the racist stereotypes about non-whites. The same thing has happened in the LGBT community. British accused rapist and convicted pedophile Karen White, a trans-identified woman who retained male genitalia, was housed in a female jail and within days had sexually assaulted four other inmates. Canadian serial rapist Christopher Hambrook, who claimed to be transgender to get into women’s shelters, was overlooked for a long time because of his “identity.” It was hard to discuss a person who identified as trans as being a serial rapist; it fit so well into the anti-trans bathroom bill talking points. Someone said they were trans to get into women’s only space and raped women. Some people I know have been called TERFs when they call out abuse by a member of the trans community, the fact that the women called TERFs are themselves trans women is overlooked. They said something bad about a trans person. Therefore they hate all trans people. That has been the mindset for too long, and this mindset must end. I bring it these examples up because they highlight the importance of identifying abusers in minority groups and because we can no longer continue to deny the existence of these abusers. This is the age of MeToo, the gags have been removed and the blinders are off. The Catholic church in the United States is being forced by the courts to release thousands of documents showing a long-term abuse of children at the hands of the clergy. Women who we see in positions of power and prominence in the media and politics are coming forward with stories of abuse at the hands of male colleges or bosses. Anonymous online advocates are standing up for young girls who were raped in small towns in America and Canada and calling out law enforcement for ignoring their claims. Sometimes even going so far as to find evidence themselves and sharing it with the media to force the hand of prosecutors. As part of my dissertation, I very briefly discussed sexual abuse in the broader pagan community. Following the revelations of what went on in the Catholic Church in my home state of PA, several friends and colleagues talked about how they knew several of the priests involved, how they had heard stories for years. Sometimes this was an open secret and, for one priest who had a speedboat and lots of girlfriends, it was a joke. My grandfather once went off on a Monsignor for his actions with women; the man was later named in the suit. I’m so proud of my grandfather. The ongoing discussion about sexual misconduct in the Catholic church and private schools, and what I had read about during my research, compelled me to write this article. I am calling out the leaders of the pagan community for ignoring sexual abuse out of fear that it played into stereotypes about pagans. It’s time for us to openly communicate with each other to identify abusers and protect our sisters and brothers from sexual predators. It’s time to confront the monsters among us head on and not be part of the “keep your mouth shut” culture. It’s time to talk about abuse in Paganism and Goddess-centered communities. (Prose) Lily B, My Telepathic Bird by Sara Wright

Image: Wikimedia Commons Every morning at “first light” Lily B sounds a call to wake up the rest of his family – his human mother – and her current dogs, two small Chihuahuas whose names are Hope and Lucy. The moment he calls – “co coooooo” (accent on the second elongated syllable) Hope and Lucy jump out of bed, with me stumbling behind them in a daze. The dogs insist that it’s time to go out because Lily B woke them up! Occasionally I refuse to get up if I haven’t slept well. When this occurs the dogs come back to bed. But not for long. After repeating his beautiful morning call a few more times, and flying to the lamp that has a good view of the cave that we sleep in, Lily B sails down to the floor and waddles into the dark room. This maneuver always works because Lucy can’t resist chasing him – she leaps out of bed just as Lily soars up to the top of the door. By this time I am fully awake, like it or not. Lily B is an African Collared dove who has lived with me for 24 years. He came to me as a chick and has never been caged. I named him Lily because I thought he was a female and added the “B” for boy when I realized my mistake. I discovered soon after getting him that he preferred to sit on top of the highest furniture in the house so I hung baskets from the ceiling with newspapers inside them. He loved perching on swinging baskets and it solved the problem of cleaning up after him. About six months after getting him I was forced to acknowledge that Lily B literally read my mind. Whenever I had a new insight he would bellow out his song in approval (or validation) repeating his song exactly three times. I listened for Lily B’s commentary as I wrote in my journal each morning, even as the rational part of my mind struggled with incredulous doubt. It was apparent from the beginning that this bird and I had an unusually close relationship. I had always loved doves and had spent many hours watching them as a child and drawing stylized images of them as an adolescent. But it was the sound of their voices that I loved best. I listened with a kind of rapture to their beautiful songs that seemed to flow like water through my body, soothing her through song. It was a relief when I discovered biologist Rupert Sheldrake’s work on telepathy in animals because I no longer felt like I was imagining things. I want to digress from Lily’s story for a few minutes to discuss Rupert’s thesis because it pertains to the relationship between Lily B and myself. Sheldrake postulates that telepathy is a normal ability found in both humans and animals. Telepathy works as a survival mechanism, functioning as a tool of communication between animals and other animals, humans and other humans, or between animals and humans by keeping them connected. Telepathy works best between those that are emotionally intimate or through those who have close familial bonds. For example, if one animal is out of calling range of its mate and danger is perceived, that information can be transmitted via telepathic communication almost instantly to the other. The strength of relationship or kinship is the key. Sheldrake hypothesizes that telepathy works through his theory of morphic resonance, whereby animals and/or people who share an invisible morphic or bodily “field” can tap into thoughts and feelings of others consciously (mind) or on an unconscious (body) level. Telepathy is not distance dependent but works most efficiently through intimate relationship, human or non-human. As soon as I read that Rupert was looking for apparent telepathic experiences between humans and animals, I sent him a letter describing the seemingly extraordinary connection I had with Lily B. He replied that my anecdotes were exactly the kind of information that he was looking for. Lily B’s behavior promptly became part of Rupert’s data bank. It’s important to note that throughout my life I had experienced telepathic behavior between my mother, my brother, my children, various wild and tame animals, plants, and myself, but the Cassandra in me refused to allow me to validate my own experiences because they didn’t fit the current western scientific paradigm. I had no context and secretly thought I might be crazy until Rupert provided me with one. Now, at 45, someone, a scientist no less, actually believed me. I was stunned. Meanwhile my life with Lily B continued to amaze me even as I continued to record it. When Lily was about five years old I noticed that he began to sing a (new) plaintive song to the mourning doves outside our house. This song upset me because I felt his distress resonating through my body. That Lily needed a mate seemed obvious. One day he sailed out the door to chase mourning doves. After the shock wore off I felt deeply conflicted; on one hand I was afraid I’d lost him, but on the other I loved the idea that he was truly free. He spent six weeks in the trees flying after one mourning dove or another but was never able to convince a female to join him. His loneliness broke my heart. Curiously he rarely left the yard and every morning he sang up the sun from a lilac bush outside my window. One day I was leaving for work when he flew into a young apple tree just as I was walking to the car. Astonished, I turned around and opened the door to the house, inviting him to come home, and immediately he flew in of his own accord. The following winter we spent in Tucson, Arizona. In the tradition of ancient women’s mysteries, mindbody birth control is a way women can manage fertility through a process of internal regulation, without using drugs, synthetic hormones, or physical devices, and without abstaining at any time during the fertility cycle. This method involves an internal mindbody process that allows women to choose whether or not to conceive, regardless of the time in the menstrual cycle, unprotected sex, or any other factors that are “normally” considered to affect reproduction. The result is true reproductive autonomy, a reclaiming of deep inner wisdom and power. It is a practical experience of what can happen when ancient mysteries of Goddess are rediscovered by modern women. Mindbody birth control is a simple practice, but very few women spontaneously develop it, and most women doubt that they can successfully use it. This is one example of the profound and lasting damage done to the creativity and autonomy of women over the last five or six millennia. The destruction of women’s wisdom and mysteries means that it takes strenuous effort and much courage for a woman today to find her way to the inner ground of true wisdom, strength, and choice. For many women, it is easier to disbelieve or ignore the possibility of a practice like mindbody birth control (and other creative life choices) than to confront the legacy of terrible, aching loss and terror that is the result of millennia of violent disenfranchisement. As my PhD research developed, I became fearful of exploring and revealing this material. Even though I knew rationally that there was no current tangible threat of persecution, there was still a deep fear about exploring a practice that had, in all probability, been the cause of persecution at other times in history. To propose a method of birth control that offers women true reproductive autonomy is radical, and some of the accompanying ideas are subversive of current consensus reality, but my fearful response was irrational and out of place in the current time. It did, however, make me more aware of the impact of cultural-historical conditioning. Anxiety often accompanies an exploration that deviates markedly from current consensus reality. The drastic and usually fatal treatment of anyone who deviated from the collective rules at various times and places has left a legacy of collective paranoia that is alleviated by conforming to consensus reality. It is easier to stay quiet, conform to the rules, and not take risks. It is easier to stay with our illusions, even when we are dissatisfied and depressed, even when we know better. So much has been lost. In my life, the context for transformation has been my experience of Goddess. This has demanded a change in the way I perceive reality. Archaic, magical, and mythical images and voices of Goddess and women have formed the core of this process. These figures in my dreams and active imagination insisted that I engage this task as a personal exploration, telling my soul story as one part of the reemergence of Goddess. My experiences have convinced me that Goddess is a force that is alive and well even after thousands of years of banishment, a force that informs our exploration of women’s mysteries and, at times, demands that we do so. The dramatic imagery in some of my dreams reminds me that this is serious business. The discontinuity of oral traditions leaves us ungrounded and uncertain. This loss of women’s ways of being threatens our existence as a species, from the basic principle of mother right to the respect for Nature and the reverence for life in general. Reclaiming women’s ways of being is more difficult than it would first appear. There are collective forces that would keep us from the embrace of Great Mother, Goddess in her many forms. To be born a woman today means that you are a daughter in an unbroken line of mothers and daughters back to the beginning of time. To reclaim even a part of the wisdom of this heritage, to remember the true life-giving power of Goddess, challenges thousands of years of conditioning that wanted us to forget. Do you remember? We have some hundred email followers as well as Wordpress blog followers. We draw 3000-4000 clicks per month on average; that is no small accomplishment for a Goddess blog that is named after a yet-to-be heard word, Mago (the Great Goddess), and that began from scratch.
(Special Post) BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE FOR EL PASO ARTIST MARIO COLÍN by Donna Snyder

Born in Juárez in 1959, Mario Colín lived his entire life in the Five Points area of Central El Paso, where he attended Houston Elementary and Austin High School. From the age of fifteen, he worked as a construction worker, building silos and other large construction projects across the U.S.A., at some point hitch hiking from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic shores. In his late twenties, he began to focus all his attention and energy on art, which had been an interest since early childhood, working as a muralist and portrait painter. Much of his art is of a religious nature, although he also painted secular art, portraits, and historical scenes. Colín painted his first mural of the Virgin of Guadalupe in collaboration with deceased artist Chuck Zavala in 1987 at Esparza’s Grocery, a small store in Central El Paso. It has now become a shrine, with community members building a stone arch and bringing flowers and candles, and has been pronounced a religious site by the parish church. Since that first mural, Colín has painted over 40 pieces of public art, many of which have become landmarks. Many of those murals are in that same Central El Paso neighborhood, on or near Piedras, including the House of Pizza, Los Alamos Grocery, The Elbo Room bar, the former Sanitary Plumbing at Piedras and Fort Boulevard. Colín twice painted a 25 foot mural of the Virgin of Guadalupe, at Alameda and Zaragoza, across from the Ysleta mission. The first version, painted in 1997, became decayed, but was a popular landmark. That mural has appeared in periodicals, art books, calendars, many newspaper articles, and in photographs exhibited in the El Paso Art Museum and galleries. In 2004, Señor José Villalobos donated and members of the community contributed money to pay laborers to replaster the wall of the century-old adobe building where it is located, and Colín repainted the entire mural for donations from passers-by and community members. Colín’s work has also been featured on the International History Channel and Canal 44, XHUI TV, in a Ford television commercial, and numerous times in the El Paso Times and the defunct El Paso Herald-Post, as well as in periodicals such as Texas Monthly, Dallas Morning News, Texas Observer, Austin American Statesman, Stanton Street magazine; literary journals such as Mezcla and GypsyMag.com; in documentaries including Walls that Speak: El Paso’s Murals, directed by Jim Klaes; in art books such as Colors on Desert Walls: The Murals of El Paso and Texas 24:7, and in various editions of Chicano Studies: Survey and Analysis, a text book used throughout the country.

Lammas – the Sacred Consuming by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

Lammas, the first seasonal transition after Summer Solstice, may be summarised as the Season that marks and celebrates the Sacred Consuming, the Harvest of Life. Many indigenous cultures recognised the grain itself as Mother … Corn Mother being one of those images – She who feeds the community, the world, with Her own body: the Corn, the grain, the food, the bread, is Her body. She the Corn Mother, or any other grain Mother, was/is the original sacrifice … no need for extraordinary heroics: it is the nature of Her being. She is sacrificed, consumed, to make the people whole with Her body (as the word “sacrifice” means “to make whole”). She gives Herself in Her fullness to feed the people …. the original Communion. In cultures that preceded agriculture or were perhaps pastoral – hunted or bred animals for food – this cross-quarter day may not have been celebrated, or perhaps it may have been marked in some other way. Yet even in our times when many are not in relationship with the harvest of food directly, we may still be in relationship with our place: Sun and Earth and Moon still do their dance wherever you are, and are indeed the Ground of one’s being here … a good reason to pay attention and homage, and maybe as a result, and in the process, get the essence of one’s life in order. One does not need to go anywhere to make this pilgrimage … simply Place one’s self. The seasonal transition of Lammas may offer that in particular, being a “moment of grace” – as Thomas Berry has named the seasonal transitions, when the dark part of the day begins to grow longer, as the cloak of darkness slowly envelopes the days again: it is timely to reflect on the Dark Cosmos in Whom we are, from Whom we arise and to Whom we return – and upon that moment when like Corn Mother we give ourselves over. This reflection is good, will serve a person and all – to live fully, as well as simply to be who we are: this dark realm of manifesting is the core of who we are. And what difference might such reflection make to our world – personal and collective – to live in this relationship with where we are, and thus who we are. We all are the grain that is harvested and all are Her harvest … perhaps one may use a different metaphor: the truth that may be reflected upon at this seasonal moment after the peaking of Sun’s light at Summer Solstice and the wind down into Autumn, is that everything passes, all fades away … even our Sun shall pass. All is consumed. So What are we part of? (I write it with a capital because surely it is a sacred entity) And how might we participate creatively? We are Food – whether we like it or not … Lammas is a good time to get with the Creative plot, though many find it the most difficult, or focus on more exoteric celebration. May we be interesting food[i]. We are holy Communion, like Corn Mother. The Autumnal Equinox occurs each year in the range of March 20-23 in the Southern Hemisphere, and in the range of September 20 -23 in the Northern Hemisphere. Autumn Equinox is a point of sacred balance: it is the point of balance in the dark part of Earth’s annual cycle. Sun is equidistant between North and South as it was/is at Spring Equinox, but in this dark phase of the cycle, the trend is toward increasing dark. Henceforth the dark part of the day will exceed the light part: thus it is a Moment of certain descent … and a sacred Moment for feeling and contemplating the grief and power of loss, for ceremoniously joining personal and collective grief and loss with the larger Self in whom we are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcZflKLkvP8 Below is the text of the video. It is based on the traditional poetry for PaGaian Autumn Equinox/Mabon ceremony[i]. This is the Moment of the Autumnal Equinox in our Hemisphere – the moment of balance of light and dark in the dark part of the cycle. The light and dark parts of the day in the South and in the North of our planet, are of equal length at this time. We feel for the balance in this moment – Earth as She is poised in relationship with the Sun … breathing in the light, swelling with it, letting our breath go to the dark, staying with it. In our part of Earth, the balance is tipping into the dark. We remember the coolness of it. This is the time when we give thanks for our harvests – all that we have gained. And we remember too the sorrows, losses involved. The story of Old tells us that Persephone, Beloved Daughter, is given the wheat from Her Mother – the Mystery, knowledge of life and death. She receives it graciously. But she sets forth into the darkness – both Mother and Daughter grieve that it is so. Demeter, the Mother, says: “You are offered the wheat in every moment … I let you go as Child, most loved of Mine: you descend to Wisdom, to Sovereignty. You will return as Mother, co-Creator with me. You are the Seed in the Fruit, becoming the Fruit in the Seed. Inner Wisdom guides your path.” We give thanks for our harvests – our lives they are blessed. We are Daughters and Sons of the Mother. Yet we take our Wisdom and all that we have gained, and remember the sorrows – the losses involved. We remember the grief of the Mother, of mothers and lovers everywhere, our grief. Persephone descends. The Beloved One is lost. Persephone goes forth into the darkness to become Queen of that world. She tends the sorrows. The Seed represents our Persephones, who tends the sorrows – we are the Persephones, who may tend the sorrows. We go out into the night with Her and plant our seeds. Persephone blesses us with her fertile promise: “You have waxed into the fullness of life, And waned into darkness; May you be renewed in tranquility and wisdom[ii].” These represent our hope. The Seed of life never fades away. She is always present. Blessed be the Mother of all life. Blessed be the life that comes from Her and returns to Her. We tie red threads on each other: we participate in the Vision of the Seed – of the continuity of Life, that continues beneath the visible. The Mother knowledge grows within us. Our hope is in the Sacred Balance of the Cosmos – the Thread of Life, the Seed that never fades away: it is the Balance of Grief and Joy, the Care that we may feel in our Hearts. (Essay) Ceremony as “Prayer” or Sacred Awareness By Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an excerpt from Chapter 3 of the author’s new book A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony. MoonCourt Ceremonial Space set for Autumn Equinox ceremony, 2013 Ritual/ceremony is often described as “sacred space.” I understand that to mean “awareness of the space as sacred”: all space is sacred, what shifts is our awareness – awareness of the depth of spacetime, and of the depth of all things and all beings. I understand “sacred awareness” as an awareness of deep relationship and identity with the very cosmic dynamics that create and sustain the Universe; or an awareness of what is involved in the depth of each moment, each thing, each being. Ceremony is a space and time given to expression, contemplation and nurturance of that depth … at least to something of it. Ceremony may be both an expression of deep inner truths – perceived relationship to self, Earth and Cosmos, as well as being a mode of teaching and drawing forth deeper participation. Essentially, ceremony is a way of entering into the depth of the present moment … what is deeply present right here and now, a way of entering deep space and deep time, which is not somewhere else but is right here. Every-thing, and every moment, has Depth – more depth than we usually allow ourselves to contemplate, let alone comprehend. This book, this paper, this ink, the chair, the floor – each has a history and connections that go back, all the way back to Origins. This moment you experience now, in its particular configuration, place, people present, subtle feelings, thoughts, and propensity towards certain directions or outcomes, has a depth – many histories and choices that go back … ultimately all the way back to the beginning. Great Origin is present at every point of space and time – right here. In ceremony we are plugging our awareness into something of that. In this holy context then – in this mindframe of knowing connection, everything one does is a participation in the creation of the Cosmos: for the tribal indigenous woman, perhaps the weaving of a basket; for another, perhaps preparing a meal; for you, perhaps getting on the train to go to a workplace. It is possible to regain this sense, to come to feel that the way one breathes makes a difference – that with it, you co-create the present and the future, and you may even be a blessing on the past. In every moment we receive the co-creation, the work, of innumerable beings, of innumerable moments, and innumerable interactions of the elements, in everything we touch … and so are we touched by them. The local is our touchstone to the Cosmos – it is not separate. Ceremony may be a way into this awareness, into strengthening it. Ceremony is actually ‘doing,’ not just theorizing. We can talk about our personal and cultural disconnection endlessly, but we need to actually change our minds. Ceremony can be an enabling practice – a catalyst/practice for personal and cultural change. It is not just talking about eating the pear, it is eating the pear; it is not just talking about sitting on the cushion (meditating), it is sittingon the cushion. It is a cultural practice wherein we tell a story/stories about what we believe to be so most deeply, about who and what we are. Ceremony can be a place for practicing a new language, a new way of speaking, or spelling – a place for practicing “matristic storytelling”[i] if you like: that is, for telling stories of the Mother, of Earth and Cosmos as if She were alive and sentient. We can “play like we know it,” so that we may come to know it.[ii] Ceremony then is a form of social action. I have found it useful to describe ceremony using and extending words used by Ken Wilber to describe a “transpersonal practice,” which is needed for real change: he said it was a practice that discloses “a deeper self (I or Buddha) in a deeper community (We or Sangha) expressing a deeper truth (It or Dharma).”[iii] My extension of that is: ceremony may disclose a deeper beautiful self (the I/Virgin/Urge to Be/Buddha), in a deeper relational community (the We/Mother/Place of Being/Sangha), expressing a deeper transformative truth (the It/Old One/Space to Be/Dharma). This is the “unitive body,” the “microcosmos” that Charlene Spretnak refers to in States of Grace.[iv] Since ceremony is an opportunity to give voice to deeper places in ourselves, forms of communication are used that the dreamer, the emotional, the body, can comprehend, such as music, drama, simulation, dance, chanting, singing.[v] These forms enable the entering of a level of consciousness that is there all the time, but that is not usually expressed or acknowledged. We enter a realm that is ‘out of time,’ which is commonly said to be not the “real” world, but it is more organic/indigenous to all being and at least as real as the tick-tock world. It is a place “between the worlds,” wherein we may put our hands on the very core of our lives, touch whatever it is that we feel our existence is about, and thus touch the possibility of re-creating and renewing ourselves. (Prose) Desire: the Wheel of Her Creativity by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an edited excerpt from the concluding chapter (Chapter 8) of the author’s book PaGaian Cosmology: Re-inventing Earth-based Goddess Religion. Place of Being is a passionate place, where desire draws forth what is sought, co-creates what is needed[1]; within a con-text – a story – where love of self, other and all-that-is are indistinguishable … they are nested within each other and so is the passion for being. I begin to understand desire afresh: this renewed understanding has been an emergent property of the religious practice of seasonal celebration: that is, the religious practice of the ceremonial celebration of Her Creativity. It has been said She is “that which is attained at the end of desire[2].” Within the context of ceremonial engagement and inner search for Her, I begin to realize how desire turns the Wheel. As the light part of the cycle waxes from Early Spring, form/life builds in desire. At Beltaine/High Spring, desire runs wild, at Summer Solstice, it peaks into creative fullness, union … and breaks open at that interchange into the dark part of the cycle – the dissolution of Lammas/ Late Summer. She becomes the Dark One, who receives us back – the end of desire. It has been a popular notion in the Christian West, that the beautiful virgin lures men (sic) to their destruction, and as I perceive the Wheel, it is indeed Virgin who moves in Her wild delight towards entropy/dissolution; however in a cosmology that is in relationship with the dark, this is not perceived as a negative thing. Also, in this cosmology, there is the balancing factor of the Crone’s movement towards new life, in the conceiving dark space of Samhain/Deep Autumn – a dynamic and story that has not been a popular notion in recent millennia. Desire seems not so much a grasping, as a receiving, an ability or capacity to open and dissolve. I think of an image of an open bowl as a signifier of the Virgin’s gift. The increasing light is received, and causes the opening, which will become a dispersal of form – entropy, if you like: this is Beltaine/High Spring – the Desire[3]that is celebrated is a movement towards dis-solution … that is its direction. In contrast, and in balance, Samhain/Deep Autumn celebrates re-solution, which is a movement towards form – it is a materializing gathering into form, as the increasing darkness is received. It seems it is darkness that creates form, as it gathers into itself – as many ancient stories say, and it is light that creates dispersal. And yet I see that the opposite is true also. I think of how there is desire for this work that I have done, for whatever one does – it is then already being received. Desire is receiving. What if I wrote this, and it was not received or welcomed in some way. But the desire for it is already there, and perhaps the desire made it manifest. Perhaps the desire draws forth manifestation, even at Winter Solstice, even at Imbolc/Early Spring, as we head towards Beltaine – it is desire that is drawing that forth, drawing that process around. Desire is already receiving; it is open. Its receptivity draws forth the manifestation. And then the manifestation climaxes at Summer and dissolves into the manifesting, which is perhaps where the desire is coming from – the desire is in the darkness, in the dark’s receptivity[4]. It becomes very active at the time of Beltaine, it lures the differentiated beings back into Her. So the lure at Beltaine is the luring of differentiated beings into a Holy Lust, into a froth and dance of life, whereupon they dissolve ecstatically back into Her – She is “that which is attained at the end of Desire.” And in the dissolution, we sink deeper into that, and begin again. All the time, it is Desire that is luring the manifest into the manifesting, and the manifesting into the manifest. Passion is the glue, the underlying dynamic that streams through it all – through the light and the dark, through the creative triplicities of Virgin-Mother-Crone, of Differentiation-Communion-Autopoeisis[5]. Passion/Desire then is worthy of much more contemplation. If desire/allurement is the same cosmic dynamic as gravity, as cosmologist Brian Swimme suggests[6], then desire like gravity is the dynamic that links/holds us to our Place, to “that which is”, as philosopher Linda Holler describes the effect of gravity[7]. Held in relationship by desire/allurement we lose abstraction and artificial boundaries, and “become embodied and grow heavy with the weight of the earth[8].” We then know that “being is being-in relation-to”[9]. Holler says that when we think with the weight of Earth, space becomes “thick” as this “relational presence … turns notes into melodies, words into phrases with meaning, and space into vital forms with color and content, (and) also holds the knower in the world[10].”Thus, I at last become a particular, a subject, a felt being in the world – a Place laden with content, sentient: continuous with other and all-that-is. (Photo Essay 5) ‘Gaeyang Halmi, the Sea Goddess of Korea’ by Helen Hwang

Part 5: Gaeyang Halmi, How Does She Relate with Mago? The field research concerning Gaeyang Halmi was undertaken with the thought that Gaeyang Halmi is related to Mago in some way. Such assumption is on the grounds that the folktales of Gaeyang Halmi and Mago Halmi substantively share the same motifs. In fact, I had thought Gaeyang Halmi is another name of Mago Halmi. A scrutiny has proven that the picture of their correlation is far more complex than I first envisaged, exposing the hidden nexuses of Old Magoism. This last part aims at disentangling the grips. It is indispensable for me to invite my readers to the task of reconstructing ancient East Asian mytho-history. Gaeyang Halmi embodies a partial manifestation of Mago as the Sea Goddess. Nonetheless, such a statement lacks complex subtexts that this topic involves. The Gurang (Nine Maidens) mytheme of Gaeyang Halmi sheds light on the mytho-history of Old Magoism (read Magoism in pre- and proto-Chinese times characterized by shaman rulers). To be specific, Gaeyang Halmi in the gurang pantheon suggests a yet-to-be-known shaman ruler, “Ungnyeo” (Bear/Sovereign Woman), founder of the confederacy of the nine states, which I call Danguk (ca. 3898 BCE-2333 BCE). The gurang represented by Gaeyang Halmi is no small clue to the pervasive yet misunderstood civilization of Ungnyeo. “Ungnyeo” is eponymous of the female symbolism of nine, such as the nine-tailed fox in East Asia and the nine muses and the nine forms of Durga beyond East Asia mentioned in Part IV. In short, Gaeyang Halmi oscillating between “Mago” and “Ungnyeo” in Her identity testifies to the suppressed history of Old Magoism. Methodically, I have two types of mythological texts to decipher the overtones of Gaeyang Halmi’s mytheme: folklore (oral narratives) and the written myth. Goddess mythemes, malleable yet immortal, constitute the grammar blocks of the gynocentric language that often appears “awkward” if not “ridiculous” to moderns. They need to be analyzed and interpreted. Feminist techniques are apt to sort out the sediments and decipher the diastrophic disturbances caused by patriarchal advances in the course of time. Some parallels between Gaeyang Halmi and Mago Halmi folk stories are overt. Their stories are so similar that they appear to be an identical goddess: A: The motif that Gaeyang Halmi walks on the sea, often described as wearing namak-sin (wooden shoes) or only beoseon (Korean traditional socks), is also commonly told in Mago stories especially from Jeju Island[i] and other coastal regions. B: That Gaeyang Halmi walks around in the sea to measure its depth is also told in the stories of Mago from other coastal regions. C: The mytheme that Gaeyang Halmi had eight daughters recurs in the stories of Mago, especially from the region of Mt. Jiri. Mago is said to have had eight daughters and sent them to eight provinces. Given the above, it is evident that Gaeyang Halmi lore resembles that of Mago. Were the populace confused about these two goddesses? I hold that the confusion was not a mistake but a way to convey that Gaeyang Halmi is related to Magoism rather than Mago Herself. In folklore, “why” and “how”are the questions to be interpreted, not to be read.
(Essay) A Cross-Cultural Feminist Alchemy: Studying Mago, Pan-East Asian Great Goddess, Using Mary Daly’s Radical Feminism as Springboard by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang

Mago is the Great Goddess of East Asia and in particular Korea. Reconstructing Magoism, the cultural and historical context of East Asia that venerated Mago as the supreme divine, is both the means and the end. Magoism demonstrates the derivative nature of East Asian religions such as Daoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism while redefining East Asian Shamanism to be the religious expression of Magoism. I encountered the topic of Mago during my doctoral studies. The topic of Mago fell out of nowhere at the time I was preparing for qualifying examinations. I had never heard the name, Mago. Only when I was able to collect a large amount of primary sources from Korea, China, and Japan, was I awakened to the cultural memory of Mago. I grew up craving the stories of Halmi (Grandmother/Great Mother), a common referral to Mago among Koreans. I had a childhood experience of being in the fairy land unfolded by my grandmother’s old stories. While “Mago” was unfamiliar to most Koreans, she was taken for granted in her many other names such as Samsin (the Triad Deity) and Nogo (Old Goddess) and place-names such as Nogo-san (Old Goddess Mountain) and Nogo-dang (Old Goddess Shrine). A Korean scholar, on a casual occasion, gave me a book entitled the Budoji (Epic of the Emblem City). He may have intuitively foreseen that I would make use of it sooner or later. The Budoji is an apocryphal text that describes the genesis event of Mago and her paradise called Mago-seong (Castle/Stonewalls of Mago) and an ensuing deployment of pre-patriarchal Korean history, thitherto unheard of. Upon my first reading of the Budoji, I was more confused than enlightened, but I felt drawn into and embraced by its mythic, historical and poetic language. I was already far along the path before I realized I was truly immersed within it! An ark of treasure emitting a pristine aura was laid before me, though I was too bedazzled to see within. Mago was there, shrouded in her old garments, seemingly obsolete, but a full and complete presence. I was tongue-tied a while. But I did inquire about Mago among Koreans. I learned that Mago was recognized by contemporary Koreans, marking the modern revival of Magoism. A movie entitled “Mago” was being made. A newly formed feminist musical band named itself “Mago.” A tea house named the “Mago Cafe” further enforced the reality that there was a pride and understanding of her existence. Foremost, I was surprised by the fact that a large number of Mago stories were available both online and written documents. Many stories that depict Mago as the nature-shaper of local landscapes such as mountains, rocks (including dolmens and megaliths), seas, villages, streams, stone-walls, and caves, were still told by the elders in small villages of Korea. I also found historical materials that mention Mago not only from Korea but also China and Japan. I brought up the subject of Mago to my advisors in time to propose a topic for my dissertation. This topic was barely known to anyone in academia. I was able to put together a bibliography with a considerable amount of source materials for my dissertation proposal. Secondary sources were, albeit small in number, also gathered. That marked the beginning of my study of Mago. I had another dissertation topic at that time. In fact, my thitherto prospective topic was Mary Daly’s feminist religious thought. Daly’s feminist thought had been the guiding light ever since I first read the Beyond God the Father in early 1990s. I encountered Mary Daly’s post-Christian thought when I was on the brink of Christianity. I had been a member of Maryknoll Sisters, an organization that opened up to me the possibility of cross-cultural living. Though I dedicated myself to implementing Christian ideals, all I could see was the necrophilic “foreground;” a world dictated by patriarchal institutions and ideologies. Feminist theology was self-transcending to me. I was unafraid of going beyond the boundary of Christianity and its God. Female subjectivity of which I was now conscious no longer held male subjectivity “neutral” or “objective.” My take of female subjectivity, however, needed to peel off another layer of ethnocentrism, Sino-centrism in East Asain studies and Euro-centrism in feminist studies. I began to re-orient myself to the new reality, “the Biophilic Background,” to borrow Daly’s term, by affirming myself, a Korean feminist, and all Others rendered as “inferior” by the patriarchal and/or Euro-centric self. I was a self-motivated feminist learner. I had spent four years alone in reading or rather soaking in Daly’s books after withdrawing from Christianity. I translated Daly’s first two books as well as one Eco-feminist book, Reweaving the World, edited by Diamond and Orenstein into Korean during that time. It was a time of self-birth as a woman-identified woman. I de-educated myself from patriarchal knowledge and ethics and spent time to reestablish my relationship with my mother. The process of de-education took place inwardly while I was reading feminist books, keeping my daily journals, and practicing meditations including physical activities such as walking and stretching. These were the things that I had already been doing. What was new to this period was that I chose things that I wanted to do especially with my body and senses. I practiced gukseon-do (a Korean traditional mind and body exercise, equivalent to yoga) on a regular basis and took art lessons including fine art and calligraphic painting. I took time in nature visiting mountains, parks, and Buddhist temples. I reflected upon my mindset to see if I was still feeding the conceptual habit of self-defeat imposed upon women by patriarchal religions and cultures. For example, I probed to see if I was still under the influence of the so-called “feminine virtues” of dependency, obeisance, and silence. For quite some years, I was caught in raw emotions of anger and grief. Nonetheless, I knew, even then, that those emotions were there to help me build myself as a life-affirming existence. Any practice that was necrophilic was something that I disassociated myself from and avoided. …

Glenys Livingstone I feel blessed to have known Lydia and to have been in occasional personal communication with her for several years … initially via the Goddess Scholars list. Lydia sent me great information of some of her journeys, was always encouraging and generously supported my CD crowdfunding project in 2015. I feel honoured to have carried her Goddess banners to Australia in 2014.
