(Budoji Essay 5) The Magoist Cosmogony by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang

Part 5: Magoist Cosmology “The primary aim of Magoist cosmology lies in lifting up the conceptual veil in people’s mind so that they can see what is given at birth.” [This is a translation and interpretation of the Budoji (Epic of the Emblem City), principal text of Magoism. Read the translation of Chapter 1 of the Budoji.] Magoist cosmology: Magoist cosmology, knowing of the female principle of Magoist cosmogony (story of the Female Beginning), reconstitutes, heals, and maintains the original vision of gynocentric soteriology. Its primary function is to guide humanity according to the law of nature whereby all things are born and evolve into their greatest potential. In short, Magoist cosmology is a gynocentric mode of thinking that shows the Way of all beings. By extension, it is an inherent principle of nature- and women-honoring civilizations. I suggest Magoist cosmology, underpinning of the Magoist cosmogony, as an antidote to the detriments of patriarchal consciousness. Its female principle restores the original unity among all entities, which has been thwarted by patriarchal cosmologies. Comprising the most foundational program of human consciousness, so constitutive that no one is born without it, Magoist cosmology is ever active and accessible to people. Nonetheless, it is made dormant in the conscious mind of people under patriarchal cultures. Thus, the primary aim of Magoist cosmology lies in lifting up the conceptual veil in people’s mind so that they can see what is given at birth.
(Prose) Survival of Spirit by Susan Hawthorne

‘What Western patriarchy has given us, in God’s name, is a world emptied of spirit.’ Monica Sjöö and Barbara Mor, The Great Cosmic Mother (1987) p. 410. I decided that I would reward myself when my book Vortex: The Crisis of Patriarchy had been sent to the printer by reading Monica Sjöö and Barbara Mor’s book. If I had read it earlier I would have included the above quote in the book. An important element in Vortex is breaking the spirit; indeed that phrase appears in several chapter titles. I have long thought about how to combine politics and spirit. Here are four examples of chapter titles: Chapter Five: Deterritoriality and Breaking the Spirit: Land, Refugees and Trauma Chapter Seven: Breaking the Spirit of the Women’s Liberation Movement: The War against Biology Chapter Eight: Breaking the Spirit of the Planet: Climate Catastrophe Chapter Nine: Sovereignty and the Spirit of Nature I notice writing these out that they are the later chapters, the earlier chapters deal with the violence of economics, violence against people with disabilities against women, against lesbians, against the land and colonisation of all these groups, of lands and peoples around the world. My concern in this book is to draw the connections between the different ways in which patriarchy violates us all and to attempt to suggest ways out of this impasse, how we might find ways to overcome patriarchy. When I use a word like spirit, I mean many things: the spirit of rebellion, the spirit of connection with the earth and the spirit of a movement like women’s liberation that enables us to see the raw violence of patriarchy and how it plays out in the world. Imperialism, slavery and every kind of domination relies on breaking the spirit of the oppressed and patriarchy has specialised in doing this in many different ways. Resistance is only possible when there is hope, when there is a sense that life could be different. Experiencing oppression, understanding trauma is integral to radical feminism and to any resistance movement whether it be against racism or ableism, against ageism or hatred of lesbians, against misogyny and colonialism. Another element is the story of Cassandra, her ability to predict the future but not be believed because the patriarchal god Apollo put a curse on her when she refused his sexual advances (#MeToo has a long history). A recurring theme in the book is that of the Trojan horse. This is a term that has entered political vocabulary in recent years; it refers to the trickery of the Greeks whose soldiers entered Troy inside the Trojan horse and whose fleet of ships pretended to leave Troy. Patriarchal capitalism has been engaging in similar tricks, offering much but giving nothing. The vortex is the spiralling downwards movement of water or air or emotion and represents the impossible-to-escape motion that the whole world finds itself in during these times. I write with the wish that we can find ways out of this. Here’s hoping for better times ahead. Barbara Mor and Monica Sjöö’s book has been sitting on my shelves for a long time. Slavic- with long hair and fairy-like stature who announces the imminent death within the domovoi by crying beneath its window.] As I met with the grandmothers over the years, I noticed a pattern they repeated often during our gatherings. The women’s worn aprons were used to wipe teary eyes and to clean dirty hands from labor; this universal gesture among them symbolized their trauma and hatred, but also their comforting and healing. During my visits to Bosnia, I would often sit next to one Ahmica grandmother who had barely spoken since the slaughter of her family on April 16th. After three long years of sitting next to this woman who was cloaked in silence, she once reached over, grasped my hands in hers, and sobbed. She gathered her apron and dabbed away my tears and then hers. No words were spoken, but as I looked down at the wet but clean apron, stained with tears, I felt the love she had for her lost ones who were now in their graves. My tears soaked into the apron along with hers. I was startled to feel a lack of hatred in this woman—a complete absence of desire for retaliation or revenge after the loss of many members of her immediate family. I looked up into her face. (Prose) Medea by Susan Hawthorne

I have been interested in Medea for decades and today I thought I might make it to Georgia to see the statue of Medea in Europe Square Batumi. The statue has Medea holding aloft the Golden Fleece. Medea has a gold helmet and wears a gold necklace. But luck was not on my side, as hire cars are not permitted to drive from Turkey to Georgia. The statue is not old, it was put in place only in 2007. So why have I been so fascinated by Medea? It started back in about 1982 when I was studying Ancient Greek. I also grew up on a sheep farm so the life cycle of sheep is very familiar to me. Medea is a woman who knows her magic, she has powers that only few others have. As a powerful woman (she is the grand daughter of the sun god, Helios) she is also dangerous. The brief story is that Jason and his merry band of Argonauts sail to Colchis (probably around Poti in modern day Georgia) in order to steal the Golden Fleece. I’ve not yet worked out the significance of the fleece, but in this part of the world at that time, sheep were wealth. I play with the trope of sheep and lambs throughout my book Lupa and Lamb (2014) in an imagined poem written in her language, Kartvelian. Medea helps Jason defeat the Titans (a tough task) and also assists in the theft of the fleece through the use of herbs. Her knowledge of magical medicine runs in the family as her aunt Circe (a goddess) is the sister of Medea’s father, Aeëtes. After fleeecing the King of Colchis (her father) of the fleece, she and Jason flee from Colchis with Medea’s brother, Apsyrtus, on board. They are pursued and in order to slow down the pursuit, Medea kills her brother, tosses his parts on the sea and gets away. This was a bad move because by heading out with Jason she has given up her land and all the landed power she had. She tries to hang on to it, but when Jason falls for the princess at Corinth, Glauce, and decides to marry her, Medea is ropable (Glauce, by contrast, still has her land). She pretends that she can cope and offers Glauce a special gown. The gown is saturated in poisonous herbs and both she and her father, Creon, die a horrible death. In the end, Medea kills her two sons and Jason is killed by a large piece of wood that falls off the Argo and hits him on the head. I think this is a story of the transition period into patriarchy, she probably lived around 3300 BP (1200 BCE). The woman, Medea, still believes she has the power and that she can get her way. But she makes the mistake of making herself landless, effectively homeless. She kills her sons in order to prevent Jason creating a dynasty which, she realises will come down through the paternal line (she might even think she is doing her sons a favour, even women do bad things sometimes). After this crime, she escapes in a flying chariot and moves in with Aegeus in Athens. It’s not a happy story, but chances are that parts of the story have changed a lot, while others say interesting things about women. It is interesting to note in this time that Medea has to take refuge in a strange land and she escapes from one place (her home) to another (Corinth) to a third (Athens) and finally heads back to Asia to live with the people who began to call themselves Medes (in northwest Iran). [Editor’s Note: This anthology was published by Girl God Books (2022).] “Broken Glass, Spiderwebs and Rainbows” by Deborah A. Meyerriecks Never fitting in. Never feeling good enough. Trying to do everything on my own. No one sees the hours or days or months or years it takes to start something or finish something. Never being able to ask for help because I haven’t figured out what I need next and when I do figure it out in a sudden flash of either understanding or inspiration, if I don’t handle it right away… it’s lost. No one understanding why I can’t just say what I need help with so they can help. They take it upon themselves to decide I didn’t actually need help; I just like to procrastinate. After all, whatever it was is done and in their opinion, perfect. Parents praise the easy A’s though high school while getting everything they asked for to be done, done. Never actually seeing any homework getting done. Proud praises became confirmation of meeting expectations. Honor Roll Society, again, naturally, of course Deborah got Honor Roll. The tedium of successful repetition became an expectation that bred boredom. Not understanding why I was floundering in college. Realizing I never learned how to study and in high school, you are told exactly what they will test you on. In college, it’s conceptual with an attention to detail you provide yourself. Learning how and where to get the necessary information – and how to process and regurgitate it – breeds Impostor Syndrome. Whether it was in small study groups or metaphysical subjects or the NYC*EMS Academy. As people would show up to my study table the hour or three before exams and I would share what notes I created for myself and my tips and tricks to remember what to do and in what order… Order of operations; same for mathematics, chemistry, and patient assessment. Trust me on this. I never felt good enough to be the teacher, but I could share what I was studying and learned thus far. This became impromptu pop-up classes on everything from Calculus to Trauma Assessment to Basic Astrology and How to Be a Witch. People would call me a teacher. I wouldn’t. I was sharing what I read, what I learned. My view of looking at the information, analyzing the data, and sharing the resulting information. If I can do this, anyone can do this. Right? Imposter Syndrome grows. Learning to be cautious never to take credit. Always citing sources and references. Completely missing the point of what a teacher is and does. Year after year, month after month, day after day, I was astounded that anyone would come to me to learn anything. If I knew it, everyone would already know it. If I can look it up and learn about it, I’m probably the last to know about it. They think I’m humble. I’m really scared. What if, just like the transition from high school to college, I fall on my face, get overwhelmed, and fail. I know I can just withdraw from classes I’m due to teach just like I withdrew from my 2nd semester of college. Walk away and disappear. No one would miss me. Who even thinks about me when I’m not there? Who loves me when I’m not useful? What if I screw up while acting as a guardian and guide while the person who entrusted me dives deep and starts to do the work of learning what they need for their own productive shadow care? What if their trust in me is misplaced? How much was from the trauma I was subjected to and how much was actually my brain processing things differently but being told I was never going to succeed and, “if you worked for me, I’d fire you.” (Yep, that was my mother). And so often never being allowed to begin – unless you not only could see the end, but all the steps and stages in between. My daughter is an absolute Rainbow Warrior Goddess. I’d like to believe that doing my own shadow work and shadow care enabled my amazing Dynamic Duo to become the creative, intelligent, insightful, and considerate adults they are today. That I’ve given them their space to develop their own communication style as well as helped them to learn common communication skills to help communicate with “normal people.” My daughter has ADHD. Her willingness to talk with her friends about what she was feeling and experiencing, especially when feeling overwhelmed, led to shared experiences and language to use to best explain and represent what is helping and what is making things harder for her. Day to day, class to class. Her doctor listened. Suggestions were made. Medication offered as part-time help but not touted as a cure or a solution. Reassurance that what she lives with is a gift as well as a curse. Gift and curse. The openness and willingness to let my Dynamic Duo tell me anything without interjecting or correcting or “helping” unless asked. It led to her sharing her diagnosis with me. But not until after she shared what she does and how she does it with interjections from both of us that I do the same thing. She let me know that although a doctor would have to diagnose, I most likely have high-functioning ADHD with burnout. Oh My Goddess! I believed she was right. Now, I have more to read and research and digest and either incorporate into my living routine or discard as not relevant or helpful for me. It matters. It helps. I don’t have writer’s block; I need to catch the right understanding of how to get to what I need to write about and how I want to express it. It’s not that I’m a slob or lazy. Executive Dysfunction. It’s why I can find an unconscious patient and figure out what they need and where to take them in split seconds …
(Fiction) The Keeper of No Time Rides the Northern Lights (and won’t tell me what to do) by Carolyn Lee Boyd

Aurora Borealis over water: By Varjisakka – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, I sprawl on the harvested corn field, the ground underneath my back rocky and unforgiving, waiting for the Northern Lights to rain radiance down onto the Earth. Those iridescent, prismatic ghosts arrayed in emeralds and sapphires, rubies and amethysts are, to me, the essence of the marvel and amazement of the universe. Still, this evening, the soil’s rich fragrance also reminds me that deep below the Earth’s surface the bones of human ancestors, of mighty herds, of tribes of birds as well as decaying blossoms and leaves, fungi and lichen, are all making fertile humus for next spring’s regeneration. They, too, lived beneath the Lights’ glow once. Did anyone from their time also stare skyward and wonder how to meet the moment in their own era of turmoil and challenge, as I do today? Will future generations be able to find their way to this remote place to do the same? For a moment, a mighty cloud of green and purple dazzles in shimmering leaps, then vanishes. When my eyes adjust again to the sky’s inky blackness, I spy a tiny cottage with a small candle in the window. Though I don’t know who dwells within, I feel as if the shelter holds a dear member of my family and I enter in. As I cross the threshold, I am thrust into a maelstrom of everything that has ever happened on the field, all occurring at once. Microbes simmer in a pool of water. An ocean covers the land and in it swim fish the like of which have not been seen on Earth for hundreds of thousands of years. A forest rises hosting animals of all kinds and sizes. Humans live in harmony with each other, non-humans, and the land, giving and receiving with love and gratitude (is this past or future?). Other humans break their sacred trusts and each war, each plague, each desecration of the land and its living beings, each crushing grief, betrayal, and act of treachery plays out in front of my eyes (is this past or future?). Layer upon layer of historical eras intertwine and overlay each other. The cacophony is overwhelming. I rush out and slam the door. A moment later, a woman opens the door. She is of indeterminate age with long hair, tattoos, jewelry made from natural materials, and a woven skirt, shirt, and shawl that could have been worn in many centuries. “I’m so sorry,” She says. “I forgot that you humans may not fully be able to exist comfortably outside of time. My mistake.” She opens the door wider and I see that the inside is now a typical cottage of a couple of centuries ago with a rudely made wood floor strewn with herbs giving off a delightful fragrance as I walked across them, a small table with two chairs, a cot for a bed, a large cupboard, a spinning wheel that seems to oddly glow, and a cauldron in the fireplace. The woman takes one of the chairs and motions me to sit in the other. She smiles and says “I’ve been waiting for you. But, of course, you already know that.” And, somehow, I do. Finally, she explains. “You were just wondering what you should do to respond appropriately to your moment in history. I know a lot of people think that the answer to this question is only revealed to a somehow more enlightened elite after several lifetimes of seeking. But, really, everything you need to know is all around you, right now. There is, in fact, nothing else that you know better.” I was puzzled. Cow Notes Every Greek myth is full of puzzles and stories that surprise when you come to them with a fresh eye. Coming to these stories through the eyes of a cow unlocked a number of things. How important is the name Bosphoros when you realise it means cow bearer. It gives the story a different dimension. The story of rape is told here, the virgin who says no three times, and the older woman who sets up a system of guards so that the virgin is safe. But few women are safe from the predations of men – or bulls – who are out to have their way – to rape. There is also the inner strength of Io in facing her trauma. And an incredible beauty which is what women hold within. She is the crescent moon with all the potential of the full moon. None of us have the right or the place to “sacrifice those we care about” for anything. She was not “above them”. And she had abundant means to do far more for them, to cure and comfort them. If indeed she imagined she had some lofty motivation as you so fervently believe, to use the power she had to withhold medical care from the poverty stricken sick and dying in some misguided and ultimately cruel attempt to bring the world’s attention to their suffering and produce compassion within those who would not otherwise feel it is the most monstrous miscarriage of any expression of what you might refer to as “love” that I have heard of outside of Jim Jones killing all of his followers in Ghana. That’s not Love. That’s not Compassion. That is Manipulation, and manipulation is ego-based. Anne Wilkerson Allen: Yes. It is an indoctrination so deep and so prolonged that it takes a lifetime to overcome…and we rely on the love and compassion of others to help bring us to this understanding….thanks, Diane. (Essay) Winter Solstice/Yule within the Creative Cosmos by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an edited excerpt from Chapter 5 of the author’s book A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony. Dates for Winter Solstice/Yule Southern Hemisphere – June 20 – 23. Northern Hemisphere – December 20 – 23 This Seasonal Moment is the ripe fullness of the Dark Womb and it is a gateway between dark and light. It is a Birthing Place – into differentiated being. Whereas Samhain/Deep Autumn is a dark conceiving Space, it flows into the Winter Solstice dark birthing Place – a dynamic Place of Being, a Sacred Interchange. This Seasonal Moment of Winter Solstice is the peaking of the dark space – the fullness of the dark, within which being and action arise. It is the peaking of emptiness, which is a fullness. As cosmologist Brian Swimme describes: the empty “ground of being … retains no thing.” It is “Ultimate Generosity.”[i] In Vajrayana Buddhism, Space is associated with Prajna/wisdom – out of which Upaya/compassionate action arises. Space is highly positive – something to be developed, so appropriate action may develop spontaneously and blissfully.[ii] In Old European Indigenous understandings, the dark and the night were valued at least as much as light, if not more so: time was counted by the number of nights, as in ‘fortnights,’ and a ‘day’ included both dark and light parts … it was ‘di-urnal’. I have been careful with my language about that inclusion in the ceremonial ‘Statement of Purpose’ for each Seasonal Moment. This awareness is resonant with modern Western scientific perceptions about the nature of the Universe: that it is seventy-three percent “dark energy,” twenty-three precent “dark matter,” four percent “ordinary matter.”[iii] The truth is that we live within this darkness: it is the Ground of all Being. In Pagan traditions since Celtic times, and in many other cultural traditions, Winter Solstice has been celebrated as the birth of the God; and in Christian tradition since about the fourth century C.E., as the birth of the saviour. But there are deeper ways of understanding what is being born: that is, who or what the “saviour” is. In the Gospel of Thomas, which was not selected for biblical canon, it says: “If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you.”[iv] This then may be the Divine Child, the “Saviour”: it may be expressed as the new Being forming in the Cosmogonic Womb,[v] who will be born. We may celebrate the birth of the new Being, which /who is always beyond us, beyond our knowing … yet is within us, burgeoning within us – and within Gaia. What will save us is already present within – forming within us. The Winter Solstice story may emphasize that what is born, is within each one – the “Divine” is not “out there”: it may be said, and expressed ceremoniously, that we are each Creator and Created. We may imagine ourselves as the in-utero foetus – an image we might have access to these days from a sonar-scan during pregnancy. This image presents a truth about Being: we are this, and it is within us, within this moment. Every moment is pregnant with the new. It will be birthed when holy darkness is full. Part of what is required is having the eyes to see the “new bone forming in flesh,” scraping our eyes “clear of learned cataracts,”[vi] seeing with fresh eyes. That is what the fullness of the Dark offers – a freshening of our eyes to see the new. And the process of Creation is always reciprocal: we are Creator and Created simultaneously, in a “ngapartji-ngapartji”[vii] way. We are in-formed by that which we form. In Earth-based religious practice, the ubiquitous icon of Mother and Child – Creator and Created – expresses something essential about the Universe itself … the “motherhood” we are all born within. It expresses the essential communion experience that this Cosmos is, the innate and holy Care that it takes, and the reciprocal nature of it. We cannot touch without being touched at the same time.[viii] We may realize that Cosmogenesis – the entire Unfolding of the Cosmos – is essentially relational: our experience tells us this is so. The image of The Birth of the Goddess on the front cover of my book PaGaian Cosmology expresses that reciprocity for me, how we may birth each other and the healing/wholing in that exchange. It is a Sacred Interchange. And it is what this Event of existence seems to be about – deep communion, which both Solstices express. Babylonian Goddess, Ur 4000-3500 BCE. Adele Getty, Goddess, 33. Birthing is not often an easy process – for the birthgiver nor for the birthed one: it is a shamanic act requiring strength of bodymind, attention, courage, and focus of the mother, and resilience and courage to be of the new young one. Birthgiving is the original place of ‘heroics,’ which many cultures of the world have never forgotten, perhaps therefore better termed as “heraics.” Patriarchal adaptations of the story of this Seasonal Moment usually miss the Creative Act of birthgiving completely, usually being pre-occupied with the “virgin” nature of the Mother which is interpreted as having an “intact hymen.” The focus of the patriarchal adaptation of the Winter Solstice story is the Child as “saviour”: even the Mother gazes at the Child in most Christian icons, while in more ancient images Her eyes are direct and expressive of Her integrity as Creator. Happy New Year, Year 2/5916 Magoma Era! by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang

Cast in 771, the bell reenacts the music of whales to remind people of the Female Beginning, the self-creative power innate all beings. Today is Day 2 of the New Year in the reconstructed Magoist Calendar characterized by 13 months per year and 28 days per month. We are heading toward the Solstice that falls on Dec. 21/22 (Day 5 of the first month in the Magoist Calendar), which happens to be the day of the first full moon of Year 2. We just passed Year 1 or 5915 Magoma Era (the Gregorian 2018). For Year 1, we had the New Year Day on December 18 of 2017, the first new moon day before the December Solstice. That makes December 18 of 2017 our lunation 1, the first lunar year that the reconstructed Magoist Calendar determines its first day of the Year 1! Although relatively short in history, the Mago Work began to celebrate the Nine Day Mago Celebration on the day of December Solstice annually since 2015. With the reconstructed Magoist Calendar, we placed it in its due timeframe, the Ninth Month and the Ninth Day, which fell on August 8, 2018 (US PST) and celebrated it for the first time according to the Magoist Calendar. Apparently, this had to be a mid-Summer event. This left us with another seasonal event, the New Year/Solstice Celebration. A few from around the globe (Germany, Korea, Italy and the US) participated in it or hosted their own local vigils. The Korean temple bell is the key symbol for the Magoist Calendar as well as the Magoist Cosmogony. It is not a coincidence that it is struck on the midnight of the New Year’s Eve. It is Korean tradition that even modern Koreans gather at the bell tower in Seoul to hear the sound of the bell at midnight. And these bells are gigantic weighing 19 tons in the case of the Emile Bell. That this convention has an ancient Magoist root remains esoteric. For not only they strike the bell 28 times in the evening indicating the 28 lunar stations that the Moon stops by in the sky throughout the year (please read below what the 28 day lunar journey means and how it is represented by women). But also the Korean temple bell is no mere acoustic device to play the beautiful sound only. (Poetry & Photo Essay) Pongal by Susan Hawthorne

I am a secularist rather than a ritualist, but I can’t help but be drawn into the celebrations that people make when they honour the passing of the seasons. Even as a child I felt the disconnect between Christmas and the hot dusty days of summer. When Christians invaded and colonised Australia they brought their holidays but did not consider changing the dates to match the seasons. I was in India recently, invited as a speaker at the Hindu Lit For Life Festival in Chennai where I had lived ten years ago. The last day of the festival was the first day of Pongal. A friend, feminist economist Devaki Jain, who had grown up in Chennai eighty years earlier invited me to join her in a car ride to see Pongal celebrations in the streets. This is a Tamil festival dating back at least a thousand years, a sun festival, welcoming the next six months of the sun’s journey, also a harvest festival. During this time many women produce beautiful drawings, known as kolam. In my book Cow I wrote a poem about kolam which I think says more than I can explain here. what she says about kolam where they are drawn and when is all important early morning is auspicious it sets the shape of the day the hard ground is cleaned points of white grain sprinkled she works quickly she knows her design for the day runs the powdered grain from point to point it is a mandala a yantra a sign so the forces of the universe align themselves with her intentions Back to Pongal. The festival goes for four days. On the first day, which is called Bhogi, people are on the streets with the fruits of harvest, piles of tumeric and stacks of sugar cane tied in bunches. My friend, Devaki, bought flowers to take back to her room in the hotel. The second day, called Thai Pongal, I was invited to a harvest lunch at the house of my friend Mangai who is a playwright, theatre director and human rights activist. The word ‘pongal’ means ‘boiling over’ or’ overflow’ and I saw this in the cooking of the sweetened rice dish into which each of the twelve people present poured some water and milk as it almost overflowed the pot. This sweet rice dish was added to the collection of other dishes on the table. I cannot tell you what they were, but the meal was delicious. After lunch everyone relaxed, someone sang, we talked and caught up on news. The third day, is called Maatu Pongal, and cattle are at the centre of celebrations on that day. I don’t know if this line up of cattle had anything to do with the day’s celebration but there they were tied up alongside a very busy main road. These were not cows and I did not see any cows with decorated horns and flowers on their heads. on that day as I have on other occasions. On the fourth day, Kaanum Pongal, things begin to wind down. One of my co-speakers at the festival said she would be visiting family members on that day. The kolams are drawn again, sugar cane is consumed and people go back to their daily lives. What I liked about being in Tamil Nadu during the Pongal festival is that it felt absolutely right. The time of the year, the connection with harvest, so I did not feel the discomfort I so often feel in the midst of the out-of-season commercialised holidays as they are celebrated in Australia. Artful Ceremonial Expression by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This article is an edited excerpt from Chapter 7 of the author’s book PaGaian Cosmology: Re-inventing Earth-based Goddess Religion. I always wore a special headpiece for the Seasonal ceremonies when I facilitated them over the years, and I feel that any participant may do so, not just the main celebrant. My ceremonial headpiece with its changing and continuous Seasonal decoration took on increasing significance over the years; it became a personal central representation of the year-long ceremonial art process of creating, destroying and re-creating. For the research period of my doctoral studies particularly, when I was documenting the process, I realised that this headpiece came to represent for me the essence of “She” – as Changing One, yet ever as Presence – as I was coming to know Her. In my journal for the Mabon/Autumn Equinox process notes one year I wrote: As I pace the circle with the Mabon headpiece in the centre, I see “Her” as She has been through the Seasons … the black and gold of Samhain, the deep red, white and evergreen of Winter, the white and blue of Imbolc, the flowers of Eostar, the rainbow ribbons of Beltane, the roses of Summer, the seed pods and wheat of Lammas, and now the Autumn leaves. I see in my mind’s eye, and feel, Her changes. I am learning … The Mother knowledge grows within me. The headpiece, the wreath, the altar, the house decorations, all participate in the ceremony: they are part of the learning, the method, the relationship – similar to how one might bring flowers and gifts of significance to a loved one at special moments. Then further, the removal and re-creation of the decorations are part of the learning – an active witness to transformation through time.
(Essay) Walking with Bb by Sara Wright

Walking with Bb: a story exploring the psychic connection between one woman and her bear. Preface: The black bear – hunting season in Maine is brutal – four months of bear hell – five if one includes the month where hunters can track bears for “practice” with hounds – separate mothers and cubs, terrorize them, tree them and do anything but legally kill them. During the legal slaughter, Hunters bait bears with junk food by putting old donuts etc. in cans and shoot the bear while he or she is eating. Most bears (82 percent) are slaughtered in this manner, the rest are killed by hounding and trapping. The season begins in August and lasts through December. Trapping, by the way, is illegal in every state but Maine. Black bears are hated, and that hatred will, of course, eventually result in their extirpation. I had a shy (male) year old black bear visiting my house this past summer with whom I developed a friendship, and what follows is part of our story: Last Saturday I was walking down the road when I remembered that I had not done my daily “circle of protection” imaging for Bb (standing as he was the day he visited me at the window early in August). When I began to do this another picture of Bb moving on all four feet with his face turned towards mine super-imposed itself over his standing image. I could almost see his expression, but not quite. I didn’t know what this imaging meant beyond that we were communicating in some unknown way, and he was in the area (not a good thing on hunting Saturdays). He had not been coming in most nights and I was worried… That night he came. He is still making nightly visits five days later, the most sequentially consistent visits since September 15th, the day I believed that he had been shot. This experience prompted me to write about telepathy and precognition. It is close to All Hallows and the full Hunter’s moon (Nov 3). I keep listening to Charlie Russell’ story which reminds me that loving bears (especially male bears) is hard, almost a sure recipe for disaster, and that I was not alone in this deep concern for and fear of losing Bb. I can barely stand to remember my other bear losses and I can’t stand feeling them. Even after I wrote about the incident with Bb, the experience seemed to carry a charge that didn’t dissipate. Had I missed something? Next I wrote “Root Healer,” exploring the possibility that as I continued to act as Bb’s “little bear mother” now employing psychic techniques to keep him safe (in some desperation as it was the only means left open to me to protect this very vulnerable yearling), that Bb’s presence might also include a gift for me and that it might involve some kind of root healing for my body because Nature thrives on reciprocity. One idea I missed completely, for it was so obvious. Bb’s image was communicating to me that we were having a psychic conversation in that very moment. It was the first time in three months of imaging protective circles that moved with him that I had confirmation from him that we were communicating effectively in this unknown way. This rarely happens. Normally when I do this kind of work, I just do it. I don’t get direct confirmation that it’s working from the animal itself (except with Lily b). Knowing this helped me make another decision I might not have made so intentionally. The hunting season will last into mid December, and I will be traveling during that last month. I keep thinking that putting actual physical distance between Bb and I might pose more of a threat for his life and I have to remind myself that psychic phenomena are not distance dependent. I should be able to image that protective circle every day and feel that it is working. Bb has already shown me that it can but I fear adding distance because I don’t completely trust my own perceptions.* I suspect believing might be an additional dimension of ensuring success when it comes to psychic protection for this bear. But how do I incorporate belief into a picture that is so clouded with personal/cultural doubt? Half the time I don’t believe myself and virtually no one except Rupert Sheldrake, Iren and Harriet have ever taken my experiences seriously. I have to remind myself that I have done this work many times dealing with doubt and it worked anyway. The point of writing this reflection might be to put me on a new edge of increasing Bb’s odds of survival. If it’s possible that an attitude that embraces believing in what I do could help me protect Bb more effectively until hunting is over and its time for him to den in peace I want to claim it. The question I need to answer now is how to go about moving into a more trusting self as a woman who continues to walk with a bear at her side? The night after I wrote the above paragraph I dream of the doubters in the roles of my parents, and in a friend. I take these dreams seriously as doubters inside me and out. These dreams may be telling me that it is unreasonable to expect me to believe that what I do works when no one else does? The problem with this idea is that on some level I do believe. I feel as if I am walking with this bear, every single day. I think about him constantly. The only thing that got me out of the house yesterday was that he was out of chocolate donuts. Something is intensifying my relationship with Bb although I never see him. I am caught in a field of bear energy and information, perhaps through some version of beauty and the beast. (Mago Essay 1) Toward the Primordial Knowing of Mago, the Great Goddess by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang

Introduction: Why Inaugurate the Great Goddess Consciousness? The Great Goddess is known by many names around the world. “Mago” is one known by East Asians from time immemorial. As such, the term “Mago” is a common noun referring to the Great Goddess rather than the name of a particular goddess. According to my assessment of a large volume of primary sources that I have documented, Mago’s divine nature is characterized as the progenitor, creator, and ultimate sovereign. In short, Mago is supreme as the Creatrix. That does not mean that there is nothing before or even after Her. In fact, according to the Budoji (Epic of the Emblem City), principal text of Magoism, Mago was born into the cosmic era prior to our cosmic era by the music/vibration/movement of the universe. Being the Creatrix, She is the beginning and the end. She is the Origin of humankind. She will be with us insofar as humanity continues to exist on its cosmic journey. She is the Great Ancestor of all humans as well as goddesses and gods. Furthermore, She is “the Cosmic Great Mother” from whom everything is derived. “Mago” is eponymous of human civilization. With regard to the world, She is immanent and transcendent at once. Standing at the threshold of the world, She embodies the world. She is the Channel that connects humanity with nature and the universe. She is the Lens through which we humans perceive Ultimate Reality. To be precise, She is the Cause for human consciousness. Through Her, we enter the world. She is self-sustained, as symbolized in the ouroboros. The beginning and the end for the world relies on Her. While holding the key to eternity, She shares the rise and fall with humankind. Here is Her intimacy with humanity: We are part of Her and She is in our DNA. My reconstruction of Mago and Magoism did not begin with a teleological scheme. No pre-measured outcome was there to motivate my undertaking of the research project. On the contrary, the topic was a serendipitous yet timely encounter, which I had never consciously expected. Nonetheless, I was not in a vacuum. As a self-identified radical feminist, I sought a new mode of knowing within my own cultural roots that can remedy Eurocentric, nationalist, colonialist, racist, and ethnocentric knowledge. The years of my graduate studies were spent in exploring such possibilities. Only after furthering my research of Mago and Magoism for over a decade, I began to grasp something at which my intellectual/spiritual voyage is destined to arrive. It was this phrase, in fact a very old mandate that ancient Magoists self-identified with, “Return to the Origin of Mago (Mago Bokbon, 麻姑複本),” that surfaced over the horizon with clarity. How do we return to Mago’s Origin? Do we return to Her Realm or invoke Her Reality to our time? Time is one seamless measurement. No need to go there or bring it here. The fact that “Mago” refers to the Great Goddess rather than an individual goddess intimates an implication at the level of consciousness. Talk of Mago invokes the Great Goddess consciousness, primordial unity/oneness. A “new” mode of knowing is re-birthed once and time and time again. Individuals are placed in unity with the whole. Each shares with the subject position, WE. After all, everyone is progeny of the Great Goddess! We are re-stored within the scheme of old knowing that the whole (universality) comprises parts (particularities) and that they are organically interconnected. Complexity and precision of the way microcosmic entities work in harmony with the cosmos are beyond the human grasp. However, we know that an assault on a part affects the whole. And vice versa. This is why I study Mago and Magoism: Reenacting the Great Goddess consciousness is the ultimate antidote to the patriarchal consciousness. WE learn how to see things beyond the isolated position of an “I,” the notion of the self molded to stand against its environments (the other) by the patriarchal mastermind. The separated “I,” implanted in one’s psyche from birth through patriarchal institutions such as the state, religion, family, and heterosexuality, conjoins the new awareness of WE. The Mago consciousness is the original, pristine perspective prior to the split of the patriarchal consciousness. It is an undifferentiated state of mind that underlies patriarchal socialization. Ancient cultures had an understanding of the mysterious working of Mago. With Mago, WE Re-Turn to the Origin! The Female is epistemically invincible, nullifying the assaults of the patriarchal “I.” The power of the Mago consciousness is well depicted in the icon of Durga defeating the patriarchal demon. One should not be mistaken that the Mago consciousness is just another form of patriarchal thinking with reversed gender. It fundamentally differs in nature from the latter. Suffice it to say that “the Almighty God,” unlike the Great Goddess, does not share the same DNA with humans. In fact, He has no DNA! The monotheistic god rules over and against the world in protection of himself. He is needy. He isn’t even transcendent but disconnected from primordial unity. He can’t be “He” but only he of She. He can’t be the representative of the world because he is biased against the female principle. Ultimately, he is incapable of embracing everyone, unlike the Great Goddess. To hide the fact that the monotheistic god leads only to the abyss of self-destruction, patriarchal religions have created dogmas to indoctrinate people. The Great Goddess consciousness exposes the patriarchal deception. As patriarchy developed over the course of history, Mago was made unintelligible. People lost the Original Knowing! The Paradise was gone not only in a physical manner but also epistemically! That may as well be a corollary in that patriarchy precludes the concept of the Great Goddess by definition. It is not patriarchy if a society upholds the female as supreme. Nonetheless, patriarchy could not get rid of the manifestation of Mago in history, culture, and the collective consciousness of people. (Essay) The Mago Hedge School: Why Remember Mary Daly? by Helen Hye Sook Hwang

Prologue By writing this, I do not intend to defend Mary Daly’s position in any dispute. A controversial figure, Mary Daly never let go of her fight with those whom she thought on the other side of her feminist war. Like anyone else in history, Mary Daly belonged to her time and culture, and I leave her unresolved issues up to her. What I write here is my fond memory of her, whose feminist thought left an indelible mark on my being as well as humanity as a whole. Daly’s contribution remains to be reassessed from the fresh eye of new generations. In the meantime, I begin to speak for my part. Without Mary Daly’s thought, I would not have been in this place where I stand right now. It has empowered me to actualize my dreams to the fullest as a wo/man who was born and raised in Korea but had come from the One Home in origin. I first hear of the hedge school “Have you heard of the hedge school, Hye Sook?” asked Mary. “No, I haven’t heard of it,” I answered. This conversation took place during the conference called the Feminist Hullaballoo held in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2007. We met there and spent three days as chums. Mary was with another friend, Yvonne Johnson, so the three of us hung out together. It was a very special time for me – I felt as if I were wrapped up in the eye of the storm. (In fact, my life feels so.) At the conference, someone asked me how I came to be invited as a featured speaker. I was among such renowned feminist speakers as Sonia Johnson, Paula Gunn Allen, and Mary Daly herself. They felt like giants to me. I told her that Mary Daly invited me. Mary had asked me if I would like to go and speak at that conference. I did not have an inflated ego. I would not have been hurt if I were not chosen. But I said “Yes” without hesitation. At the time, it felt like another one of the many “outlandish” adventures that I had undertaken throughout my life. In retrospect, however, this was a very special “Yes” to the beginning of my life’s new phase. It was my debut as a radical feminist, so to speak – the first time I spoke to such a large number of radical feminists. Mary sat in the front row and listened to my talk. She nodded her head saying “It was great,” when I finished and came down to sit next to her. Mary was just getting to know my research on Mago in that year; that was what she was referring to. Nonetheless, what mattered to me was not how well I presented my research, but that I managed to do it! The jitters were over! I was returning Home and had just been baptized in public as a Wo/man, the whole being. [This talk was later published in Trivia: Voices of Feminism.] My two dreams When I accepted Mary’s invitation, I was thinking of my two dreams. I am a dream-listener. Or to be more accurate, my dreams have led me through. These dreams with regard to Mary Daly are in fact old; I dreamt them before my arrival in Claremont, California, in 1997. In the first dream, I was in the crowd when Mary spoke to a large audience. The venue was an open plaza and the stage was far away from where I was standing. Then, out of the blue, Mary called my name and asked me to come up to the podium. It sounded like a call to my soul. So I did. Then, she passed the microphone to me. I blacked out, not knowing what to say, and woke up. This dream told me what I lacked, a message to deliver to the world, which I did not have for some years. The second dream was a brief but sweet one. Mary and I were standing in an old-style classroom as co-teachers. The dynamic between us was intimate and enjoyable. Honored and proud, I felt in the presence of my old friends. The classroom was a dream-like space within a dream, as if we were in a time machine! More than two decades have passed since I had those dreams, and now I see that they were indeed self-fulfilling dreams. The first dream was fulfilled through the event of my speech to the Feminist Hullaballoo conference. By then, it was clear that I was going to speak about the topic of Mago, which I had encountered for my Ph.D. dissertation. It was the topic that I had searched for without knowing and I found it. Now I see that it found me! It is the tradition of my ancestors that has beckoned me to come Home. In Mago, I found an anciently originated gynocnetric reality, which encompasses everyone regardless and named it Magoism. Mary and I meet in person The first time I met her in person was in early April of 1999, in Claremont, California. I had been in contact with Mary Daly for about four years before then. We had spoken over the telephone, faxed, and snail-mailed across the Pacific Ocean while I was living in Korea from 1994 to 1997. Mary was invited to speak by the committee of Claremont Colleges programs including the Women’s Studies in Religion Program at Claremont Graduate University, the program I was studying in. In fact, that was the program that Mary had suggested I apply for, and she had written a recommendation letter on my behalf. My first meeting with her is imprinted on my soul, and it feels as fresh as ever. It was an unusually cold spring day in Claremont. It even sprinkled some rain. Making the Gynocentric Case: Mago, the Great Goddess of East Asia, and her Tradition Magoism[i] This study documents and interprets a substantial body of primary sources concerning Mago [麻姑, also known as Magu or Mako] from Korea, China, and Japan. Much of this material has never been brought to light as a whole. In working with these various and sundry data including folklore, paintings, arts, literature, poetry, toponyms, rituals, historical and religious records, and apocryphal texts, I encountered an organic structure that relates these seemingly unrelated materials and named it Magoism. Magoism refers to an anciently originated gynocentric cultural and historical context of East Asia, which venerates Mago as supreme divine. Although “Magoism” is my coinage, its concept is not new. Magoism is referred to as the Way of Mago, the Origin of Mago, the Event of Mago, Reign of Mago, Heavenly Principle, or simply Mago in historical sources. In the West, its partial manifestation is known as the cult of Magu within the context of Daoism. One of the earliest verified records, the Biography of Magu (Magu zhuan) written by Ge Hong (284-364) dates back to proto-Daoist times.[ii] Nonetheless, “Mago” remains largely forgotten and misrepresented to the world especially in modern times. More incisively, her sublime divinity is made invisible despite strong evidence. No scholarship in the West has treated Mago as a topic in her own right. Mago’s multiple identities ranging from the cosmogonist to a grandmother, from the progenitress to the Daoist goddess, from the sovereign to a shaman/priestess in Korea, China, and Japan remain unregistered in modern scholarship. When mentioned, her transnational manifestation is not recognized cogently. She is often lumped together with other parochial goddesses from China. Other times, she is fetishized as a Daoist goddess of immortality. She is also known, among other representations, as the giant grandmother (goddess) who shaped the natural landscape in the beginning of time among Koreans. In any case, Mago is not deemed on a par or in relation with Xiwangmu (the Queen Mother of the West in Chinese Daoism) and Amaterasu, (the Sun Goddess of the Japanese imperial family), both of who represent the East Asian pantheon of supreme goddesses to the West. I hold that the paramount significance of Magoism lies in the fact that it redefines the female principle and proffers a gynocentric utopian vision to the modern audience. Its utopian cosmology is no free-floating abstract idea but imbedded in the mytho-historical-cultural reality of East Asia. I suggest Magoism as the original vision of East Asian thought. Put differently, Magoism is an East Asian gynocentric testimony to the forgotten utopian reality. In the sense that Magoism presents an East Asian gynocentric symbolic system, this study is distinguished from Western and androcentric discourse. In other words, its gynocentric universalism should not be subsumed under the discourse of Western or patriarchal universalism. Magoism prompts an alternative paradigm of ancient gynocentrism that redefine major notions of the divine, human, and nature in continuum. Mago, the great goddess, is the unifying and at the same time individualizing force in this system. Magoism enables a macrocosmic view in which all individualized parts are organically co-related and co-operating. As a religious system, it is at once monotheistic and polytheistic. That is, Mago is the great goddess in her multiple manifestations. Underlying the patriarchal edifices, the Magoist principle is the Source from which the latter is derived.
