Redemption Ntozake Shange did the same work of redemption when she created her choreopoem in the San Francisco Bay area: For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. Performing her sacred rite in bars, cafes, galleries, women’s studies departments and other spots, this modern-day ritual would eventually emerge on Broadway in 1976 at the Booth Theater produced by Joe Papp. Seven women dressed in rainbow colors shared their stories, their loves, music and some of the grief of black women in a wilderness of human relationships where friends are capable of rape and husbands of murdering their children.

Swan Cloud in Negative, Art by Claire Dorey How the Heavenly Goose, Sacred Metaphor for Mother’s Voice, Tumbled into Mass Graves and Brothels Weightless, She floats upon a cloud of feathers, soaring above an abyss between worlds: The past and future.Aphrodite riding Her goose is a transitional image, perhaps marking a pinch point in time that She, as Goddess of Love, transcends. Behind Her: The primordial void and a past steeped in Bird Animism, Swan Shamanism and the hybrid, shape-shifting symbolism of the prehistoric Bird Goddess. Before Her: A future where the goose, an archetype of the Divine, plummets, wings broken, into mass graves and brothels. I’m floating on feathers, drifting to realms where the subconscious permeates everything. I’m buried alive, wrapped in swan wings, waiting, watching, eyes focused on a slither of sky shining through a vent in the rubble, or is it a slit in the feathers? Although my view through this ‘pinhole’ is soft at the edges, I watch a swirl of creatures eddying heavenwards: Aphrodite floating to celestial dimensions upon a goose cloud; Eros hatching from the world-egg; Icarus flying too high; fragments of soul exiting the soil, spinning up to the river in the sky. Venturing into the starless unknown is not an empty gesture. Exposing the ‘bare bones’ of buried trauma is about digging up the hurt, the hidden, the silencing, the obliterated AND archeological treasure. There are stories sitting in the ground, waiting to be found. Lurching from consciousness, to the subconscious, fearing nothingness, I’m dampening dread by singing “Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie” [1]. I’m concentrating on something, anything, to remove myself from this dream, trance, reality, so, in the spirit of storytelling, I’m summoning Mother Goose with birdsong, hoping she’ll read “Tales of Mother Goose” [2] and “Mother Goose’s Nursery Rhymes” [3]. Sharing stories is an act of love and I’m hoping there is love in the wing I curl up on. “Are you comfortable?” honks a female Baritone. “Then I shall begin.” In the gloom I glimpse a sassy, hybrid, bird-woman creature, eyeing me over her spectacles. This is not Mother Goose. I suspect I’ve summoned an ancient deity. She’s all long neck, bristly fingers, snapping beak and ‘dare me’ eyes, seeing through everything. I know she is female because her hips curve like an egg, oozing fertility. I think she is a Bird Goddess, embodiment of love, ecstasy and rage, a parthenogenetic creature spanning the imagination from the Paleolithic to the Bronze Age and beyond. [From 1604-1914 a series of Enclosure Acts (UK) restricted ‘country folks’ access to common land. Unable to graze animals or forage, the choice was ‘move or starve.’] Second millennium Golden Egg mythology was monetized. In the 1902 English pantomime, Mother Goose faces eviction because she cannot pay her rent. “The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs” [5] became a cautionary tale for embryonic capitalists, warning against murdering the goose, their source of wealth. “[In the ancient world] geese were [ ] associated with heroines and she-gods: Penelope, Aphrodite, Athena, Kore/Persephone, Artemis/Hecate, Nemesis and later Isis.” – Hall, Edith. The Lyceum Goose Mystery, The Editorial. [6] The Goose was also associated with Goddess Gula; Geb, the ‘celestial goose’ and layer of the primordial egg (Geb is“goose” in hieroglyphs); and winged Isis, sometimes called “the Egg from the Goose”. The Bird Goddess has landed, taloned feet gripping the rubble, ‘V-shaped’ hip tattoos echoing the triangular formation migrating geese fly in, affirming the woman and bird connection, as time keepers and mysterious creatures of cycles, rhythmically connected to bodily, seasonal and celestial motion. The pivot point was the Bronze Age. “Aphrodite and her goose’s symbolic separation into distinct entities, as opposed to the ‘therianthropic, prehistoric Bird Goddess’, holistically expressing the ‘interdependency of life,’ is part of the story of the systematic colonization, exploitation and ownership of all sentient beings, including women (and the goose); the Goddess; the very Earth Herself and even the concept of ‘Love’. It’s about dividing and conquering (even in symbolism) to gain power.” “By reducing the role of the Goddess of Love, the ecstatic source of existence, to Goddess of ‘sexual love’ and ‘sexual arousal,’ Her role serves patriarchy well. ‘Sexual love’ personified by passivity and femaleness, within a patriarchal framework using rape mythology to subjugate women, means women are vulnerable. One example: Praxiteles’ ‘nude’ sculpture, Aphrodite of Knidos, became a sex object and was repeatedly assaulted by men breaking into the Temple. Abuse and domination were seeping into the definition of ‘Love.’” Although the goose is considered the turbulent aspect of the Holy Spirit, there are numerous references demonizing birds in the bible. “Matthew identifies the birds of the air as “the wicked one” (Matthew 13:4,19). Neurodiversity (ND) holds keys to unlock patriarchal prisons. What has been used against us can be turned inside out to set us free. The challenge for me in writing about this was to talk myself off the ledge of entirely earned outrage and stay firmly in the increasingly familiar realm of celebration, where all the many Truths retain their capitals and we are securely positioned to win the race of human. I will be taking full advantage of neurodivergent license, a step or twirl beyond poetic license. I didn’t have a word for how I am designed for a long time. I knew I was different, definitely one of those who was not like the others. I lived my life as an apology. The word neurodiversity was created in 1996 to describe diagnosed deficits in learning and thinking processes on the autism spectrum. I prefer Harvard Health’s recent definition: “Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one ‘right’ way…” This ‘no one right way’ business is the patriarchy’s worst nightmare, as it should be. The neurodiverse are uncontrollable by design. It’s our superpower. But I’m getting a bit ahead of my tale. My Own Neurodiverse Design My brand of neurodiversity is the extra-sensory sort. I was born with enhanced senses, as if I had less filters or had a blowhole open in the top of my head that let more in. I saw, heard, felt, and knew things that no one around me could verify. And these abnormal sensings were the favorite parts of my life. I found real companionship and truth there. I still do. Tragedy struck when I realized I could not share them. This confused me! Why would I see, hear, feel, and know all of these marvelous things if they were not to be shared with my family and friends? Was I just simply flawed? ‘Twas a mystery that required discovery. I was convinced, over the first dozen years of my life, to keep quiet about everything outside the reality most people lived in. I apologized continuously for all that I saw, heard, felt, and knew. For all that I was. I was shamed into silence. My life became about exploring how to move from shrinking from my differences to putting them to work in service. I began to look for the others who did not fit in. I found that my ND, before I ever heard the word, was neither a deficit nor a disorder, but rather a power of a higher order. Occasionally it even saved a life. Eventually, I stopped hiding and apologizing and got to work. Now I know there are many of us. And we hold crucial keys. I must admit I was relieved when Malcolm Gladwell published his book, “Blink,” in 2007 about how we often ‘know without knowing.’ He provided a case study of an expensive museum statue that turned out to be fake. The many experts hired to assess it did not agree about whether it was or was not. The ones who ‘knew’ it was fake could not say how they knew. They just did. And they were correct! My people! Extreme sensitivities often accompany our higher order powers. As a child it was nearly impossible, for example, for me to cut roses for the dinner table. I heard their cries. No one could convince me it didn’t hurt them. I learned to mask my reactions to pass for normal. Usually. Particularly in women, masking leads to a loss of sense, of self, with an increased vulnerability to patriarchal control. We accept the stigma and gaslight ourselves, incrementally dismantling our truth in exchange for acceptance, sanctuary, and belonging. It’s a survival strategy and a recoverable error. As my accumulated life experience and research yielded success, I felt most at home in the arms of nature and the rainbow goddess, the self-sustaining natural wells of love and truth. When I found myself at my wit’s end, I would wrap myself around a tree until I was better. It always works. I found myself regularly at odds with the dominant paradigm. One of its names is Patriarchy. Patriarchal Prisons – Misogyny and Anecdotal Evidence I don’t have enough pages to catalogue the abuses of the patriarchal system. And I’m committed to staying out of the Outrage Zone. I’m focusing on my top two. Misogyny and the invalidation of individual truth are patriarchal plot lines designed to enforce powerful prisons. They target agency. A famous example of this was the women who knew too much and bowed too little – being burned as witches, among other things. And even more astonishing, a successful campaign through history to make us fear the witches rather than their murderers. This became a tried-and-true Formula: Step One: Label something to create fear or discredit it. Step Two: Ostracize or destroy it. Step Three: Absolve or even glorify the perpetrators. Misogyny The assault on the feminine, misogyny, is not new. It’s thousands of years overdue for a rewrite. Ironically, ancient patriarchal cultures conspired to deprive women, the natural heiresses to goddess culture, of the right to any religious leadership. The Council of Nicea, a Council of Christian Bishops in Turkey in 325 AD, removed women from the priesthood despite women being equally honored as the original apostles of Christ. In about 400 AD, the Oracles of Delphi closed their well of inspiration and walked away after more than a thousand years when the Priests of Apollo began telling them what to say based on who would pay the most to fill their coffers. Until recently, the patriarchy successfully conspired to deny woman all sorts of everyday rights. Women were not allowed to own …

Do you tell yourself the lie that you are not creative? Read this. All your bones are creative bones darlin’ ~ Sue Hoya Sellars Creativity isn’t divided between creative and not creative. Is not about talent or not talent. We are all creative. We are all makers. We are creations ourselves and live in an inherently creative environment, aka you know, planet earth. To say “I’m not creative” or that “I don’t have a creative bone in my body” is an illusion often fed to us by someone along the path who had no idea what they were talking about. A child would likely never say, “I’m not creative”. We learn ‘not creative’ by others comments and by self comparison. It is understood by the child that creativity is a natural state. Let us return to our natural state of being creative, lit up by our senses, and turned on by how we see, feel, touch, sense, hear, experience and all the ways we interact with being. It can take a lot of time to unlearn thinking of one’s self as not creative. It can take years especially if YOU aren’t creating – somehow creating itself helps change the old dominant story. Then once the fire is blazing no one can tell you again that you don’t have what it takes. Or that you don’t have talent. They may tell you but you won’t listen. You have everything you need and it isn’t about being GOOD or making something worthwhile or pretty. It’s just about you being an inventor of form. Pulling stardust across the veil, the event horizon looms as we bring ideas into matter. POW! I don’t teach painting skills or how to become an artist. I am here to remind us of our instinctive, inherent, uninhibited capacity to be self expressed. Self expression opens a revolution in consciousness – gives one access to themselves. This is where a new kind of life can begin. Where before we were only partly awake and now we are seeing what there really is about who we could be being if we let ourselves out of our self imposed – not creative enough – cages. You aren’t a-type personality, you aren’t left brained, you aren’t the ‘intellect’ in the family. YOU – are a maker. This is why I teach. I am part of the ones who wake the others. My path is creativity and you will hear our creations roar in beauty across the planet as we rise up from sleep and greet the day with paintbrushes, pens, drums and dancing feet ready to weave magic wherever we alight our sparks. What we write below will be included and published in The Girl God, Mother Tree Sanctuary, and Return to Mago. As a subaltern minority as we seem at the current point of time, Goddessians/Magoists [the term Mago means the Great Goddess] need to make extra efforts to make our voices and presences exposed to the public and inner circles. Length and style are open. Please also include your name, region/state/country, title, and/or website URL. We strongly encourage you if you are located in a place where Goddessians are rarely around. And “Isn’t Goddess also God?” “Isn’t it all the same as long was we’re all coming from our ‘higher’ self?” she asked. So I saw this warranted a longer and much deeper discussion. I initially thought I should formulate a response and post it as a Page or Tab in our website, but after some reflection with Helen, I saw how much better it would be if we replied to this question as a diverse and creative collective. I surely do not have all the answers as an individual but perhaps together, we can come up with something more whole, colorful and satisfying. I do hope you will contribute a little something! Anne Wilkerson Allen: NOT that I find her blameless – her advocacy against contraception and abortion is decidedly anti-female, but there is so much focus on the Pope and the priests now….I keep wondering when the abuses of the nuns is going to come to light. Anne Wilkerson Allen: I think Ireland recently had something in the news about this… Ireland apologizes for Catholic laundry scandal Ireland’s premier has issued a state apology to the thousands of Irish women who spent years working without pay in prison-style laundries run by Catholic nuns. Former residents of the now-defunct Magdalene Laundries have campaigned for the past decade to get the government to apologize and pay compensation to an estimated 1,000 survivors of the workhouses. Two weeks ago the Irish government published an investigation into the state’s role in overseeing the laundries. In the season leaves should love, since it gives them leave to move through the wind, towards the ground they were watching while they hung, legend says there is a seam stitching darkness like a name. Now when dying grasses veil earth from the sky in one last pale wave, as autumn dies to bring winter back, and then the spring, we who die ourselves can peel back another kind of veil that hangs among us like thick smoke. Tonight at last I feel it shake. I feel the nights stretching away thousands long behind the days, till they reach the darkness where all of me is ancestor. I turn my hand and feel a touch move with me, and when I brush my young mind across another, I have met my mother’s mother. Lammas/Late Summer within the Creative Cosmos by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an edited excerpt from Chapter 10 of the author’s new book A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony. Southern Hemisphere – Feb. 1st/2nd, Northern Hemisphere – August 1st/2nd These dates are traditional, though the actual astronomical date varies. It is the meridian point or cross-quarter day between Summer Solstice and Autumn Equinox, thus actually a little later in early February for S.H., and early August for N.H., respectively. a Lammas/Late Summer table The Old One, the Dark and Shining One, has been much maligned, so to celebrate Her can be more of a challenge in our present cultural context. Lammas may be an opportunity to re-aquaint ourselves with the Crone in her purity, to fall in love with Her again, to celebrate She Who creates the Space to Be. Lammas is a welcoming of the Dark in all its complexity: and as with any funerary moment, there is celebration of the life lived (enjoyment of the harvest) – a “wake,” and there is grieving for the loss. One may fear it, which is good reason to make ceremony, to go deeper, to commit to the Mother, who is the Deep; to “make sacred” this emotion, as much as one may celebrate the hope and wonder of Spring, its opposite. If Imbolc/Early Spring is a nurturing of new young life, Lammas may be a nurturing/midwifing of death or dying to small self, the assent to larger self, an expansion or dissipation – further to the radiance of Summer Solstice. Whereas Imbolc is a Bridal commitment to being and form, where we are the Promise of Life; Lammas may be felt as a commitment marriage to the Dark within, as we accept the Harvest of that Promise, the cutting of it. We remember that the Promise is returned to Source. “The forces which began to rise out of the Earth at the festival of Bride now return at Lammas.”[i] Creativity is called forth when an end (or impasse) is reached: we can no longer rely on our small self to carry it off. We may call Her forth, this Creative Wise Dark One – of the Ages, when our ways no longer work. We are not individuals, though we often think we are. We are Larger Self, subjects within theSubject.[ii] And this is a joyful thing. We do experience ourselves as individuals and we celebrate that creativity at Imbolc. Lammas is the time for celebrating the fact that we are part of, in the context of, a Larger Organism, and expanding into that. Death will teach us that, but we don’t have to wait – it is happening around us all the time, we are constantly immersed in the process, and everyday creativity is sourced in this subjectivity. As it is said, She is “that which is attained at the end of Desire:”[iii] the same Desire we celebrated at Beltaine, has peaked at Summer and is now dissolving form, returning to Source to nourish the Plenum, the manifesting – as all form does. This Seasonal Moment of Lammas/Late Summer celebrates the beginning of dismantling, de-structuring. Gaia-Universe has done a lot of this de-structuring – it is in Her nature to return all to the “Sentient Soup” … nothing is wasted. We recall the Dark Sentience, the “All-Nourishing Abyss”[iv] at the base of being, as we enter this dark part of the cycle of the year. This Dark/Deep at the base of being, to whom we are returned, may be understood as the Sentience within all – within the entire Universe. The dictionary definition of sentience is: “intelligence,” “feeling,” “the readiness to receive sensation, idea or image; unstructured available consciousness,” “a state of elementary or undifferentiated consciousness.”[v] The Old Wise One is the aspect of the Cosmic Triplicity/Triple Goddess that returns us to this sentience, the Great Subject out of whom we arise. We are subjects within the Great Subject – the sentient Universe; we are not a collection of objects, as Thomas Berry has said.[vi] This sentience within, this “readiness-to-receive,” is a dark space, as all places of ending and beginning are. Mystics of all religious traditions have understood the quintessential darkness of the Divinity, known often as the Abyss. Goddesses such as Nammu and Tiamat, Aditi and Kali, are the anthropomorphic forms of this Abyss/Sea of Darkness that existed before creation. She is really the Matrix of the Universe. This sentience is ever present and dynamic. It could be understood as the dark matter that is now recognized to form most of the Universe. This may be recognized as Her “Cauldron of Creativity” and celebrated at this Lammas Moment. Her Cauldron of Creativity is the constant flux of all form in the Universe – all matter is constantly transforming. We are constantly transforming on every level. a Lammas/Late Summer altar These times that we find ourselves in have been storied as the Age of Kali, the Age of Caillaech – the Age of the Crone. There is much that is being turned over, much that will be dismantled. We are in the midst of the revealing of compost, and transformation – social, cultural, and geophysical. Kali is not a pretty one – but we trust She is transformer, and creative in the long term. She has a good track record. Our main problem is that we tend to take it personally. The Crone – the Old Phase of the cycle, creates the Space to Be. Lammas is the particular celebration of the beauty of this awesome One. She is symbolized and expressed in the image of the waning moon, which is filling with darkness. She is the nurturant darkness that may fill your being, comfort the sentience in you, that will eventually allow new constellations to gestate in you, renew you. So the focus in ceremony may be to contemplate opening to Her, noticing our fears and our hopes involved in that. She is the Great Receiver – receives all, and as such She is the Great Compassionate One. Her Darkness may be understood as a Depth of Love. And She is Compassionate because of …

I have made short spaces in the video where it could be paused. For more full participation in the ceremony, you could have some past photos of yourself, an altar with ancestor photos, a gingerbread snake, some apples sliced up, and some apple juice. The script for this Samhain ceremony is offered in Chapter 4 of my book A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony, with all acknowledgements and references there. However I want to acknowledge here the inspiration and some text of Robin Morgan’s poem “The Network of the Imaginary Mother” in her book Lady of the Beasts, for which I was given permission in my book. I also acknowledge here the paraphrase of some words by Starhawk in her book The Spiral Dance, used in the rite of Sailing to a New World. Some may choose to remember any self from the entire evolutionary story, with whom they would like to identify. The game seems appropriate to what each being does existentially in so many ways, over the eons as well as in our personal lives. The chant can be found on YouTube. It represents to me an essential quality of the Goddess. An aspect I strive to cultivate within, embody, and express externally. I use it to guide all my actions by asking myself, “Is this nurturing?”; “By doing this, what am I nurturing?” Very often, minds have been conditioned to counterpose nature and nurture, creating not only a divide, but also a controversy. The intrinsic feature of Nature is to nurture. The womb not only births, but nurtures. Nothing can be sustained or achieved without nurture. Nature teaches us the lesson of acceptance.
