(Essay) Being is the Language of the Goddess by Carolyn Lee Boyd

For almost 40 years, my feminist activism has been accomplished primarily through writing in the English language, until the day I learned that I was even more fluent in the Goddess language of being. During a drumming practice not long ago I was thinking about something my teacher had said — “All musical instruments come from drums” — and I thought, “When I play my drum, I speak the oldest of languages, the heartbeat of our mother in the womb,” a language that all share. But this language was older than that, beginning with the Big Bang and continuing in the waves that make up the reality of our universe, the masterpiece of She Who Creates. This was a language I profoundly knew but never thought of as a language till that moment. It is the language of being simply who we are, in all our sacred glory, in the most elemental way beginning with the most basic rhythm of our lives. The next day I was walking in the woods and heard a racket, frogs in a pond all warbling at once, then all silent, then all warbling again. Down the trail was a tree full of birds all chirping as they flew from branch to branch in a kind of syncopated rhythm. I suddenly thought of them as speaking to each other in their own language — “Let’s make some babies!” “There’s a human down there!” — but also to me in a language we both understood that came from our instincts to come alive in the season’s warmth and the return of abundance and life — “It’s spring! Time for renewal!” When I wandered down to my garden to see what plants were beginning to pop through the soil, the violet flowers of the periwinkle — that had come and gone on the same hillside for decades since, most likely, before my own childhood — spoke of the constancy of nature even as I move from youth to middle age to elderhood. Bloodroot has a red sap that is poisonous, but is traditionally used as a crimson dye, and small, simple, white flowers that have always reminded me that the new life of spring comes from blood and the hard work of giving birth, whether to baby beings, art works, relationships or anything else. The first leaves of the healing herbs in my garden assure me of the benevolence of the universe. All of these messages came from the plants’ expression of their gift of themselves, whether their beauty, their sap and simplicity of their flowers, or their healing properties. These beings, through their effect on me and other beings who encounter them, have an impact on the world just by expressing who they most essentially are. Do humans do the same? I began to think of my ancestors, especially my female ancestors, and wonder, what did they tell me through the language of their lives? Each of them, in her own way and within the constraints of her time and place, expresses to me that life is to be lived as an adventure on my own terms. My grandmother went to college at age 40 with small children at home at a time when women simply did not do that. My mother learned to fly an airplane in midlife because she wanted to see the world from heaven’s viewpoint. As I sat by my mother’s bedside as she died, and we looked into each other’s eyes, she traced a tear down her cheek with her finger and I knew that she was saying that she would miss being on this plane with me, but that love is eternal. All these actions that came deeply from the heart transformed me more than only words ever could. As I considered, I realized that the revolutions that shake the world come not just from what we say, but our expressions in deed that show the effects on ourselves of the changes we are making in the world. On my 25th birthday, I heard Merlin Stone speak about her experience writing “When God Was a Woman” and for the first time I understood that Divinity could look, and for most of human history had looked, like me, a woman. A few months later I witnessed Diane Wolkstein performing “Inanna” at the Museum of Natural History in New York City and I knew that the stories of Goddess had meaning for my own life and that I could center my spirituality around Her. Their words were important, but more essential to my new life-changing understanding was who Merlin and Diane were as women — Merlin’s passion and sureness that she was a messenger for the Goddess who was ready to re-emerge in the world and Diane’s willingness to move Goddess through her body and voice to speak again to the women of the world. Their language of being was what remade me by showing me that Goddess is alive and that I am part of Her just as they were. In the decades since then I have known many women who have changed the world, sometimes one person at a time, sometimes in ways that have moved society as a whole forward. In each case, it is not what they said or wrote alone, but rather who they were and how they affected those who came into contact with them that was their most effective activism. What will my true Goddess activism be? Will my life echo what I have comprehended Goddess saying to me — “Be free!”, “Know that you are loved always for who you are,” “Respect all beings, the Earth, and the universe,” “Understand in the deepest womb of your soul that you are sacred and deserving of happiness, joy, and peace”? How will I “be” to convey these things so that others see the Goddess within themselves who do not now? Now I know that every moment is precious and not to be wasted. Everything I …

Aurora Borealis over water: By Varjisakka – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, I sprawl on the harvested corn field, the ground underneath my back rocky and unforgiving, waiting for the Northern Lights to rain radiance down onto the Earth. Those iridescent, prismatic ghosts arrayed in emeralds and sapphires, rubies and amethysts are, to me, the essence of the marvel and amazement of the universe. Still, this evening, the soil’s rich fragrance also reminds me that deep below the Earth’s surface the bones of human ancestors, of mighty herds, of tribes of birds as well as decaying blossoms and leaves, fungi and lichen, are all making fertile humus for next spring’s regeneration. They, too, lived beneath the Lights’ glow once. Did anyone from their time also stare skyward and wonder how to meet the moment in their own era of turmoil and challenge, as I do today? Will future generations be able to find their way to this remote place to do the same? For a moment, a mighty cloud of green and purple dazzles in shimmering leaps, then vanishes. When my eyes adjust again to the sky’s inky blackness, I spy a tiny cottage with a small candle in the window. Though I don’t know who dwells within, I feel as if the shelter holds a dear member of my family and I enter in. As I cross the threshold, I am thrust into a maelstrom of everything that has ever happened on the field, all occurring at once. Microbes simmer in a pool of water. An ocean covers the land and in it swim fish the like of which have not been seen on Earth for hundreds of thousands of years. A forest rises hosting animals of all kinds and sizes. Humans live in harmony with each other, non-humans, and the land, giving and receiving with love and gratitude (is this past or future?). Other humans break their sacred trusts and each war, each plague, each desecration of the land and its living beings, each crushing grief, betrayal, and act of treachery plays out in front of my eyes (is this past or future?). Layer upon layer of historical eras intertwine and overlay each other. The cacophony is overwhelming. I rush out and slam the door. A moment later, a woman opens the door. She is of indeterminate age with long hair, tattoos, jewelry made from natural materials, and a woven skirt, shirt, and shawl that could have been worn in many centuries. “I’m so sorry,” She says. “I forgot that you humans may not fully be able to exist comfortably outside of time. My mistake.” She opens the door wider and I see that the inside is now a typical cottage of a couple of centuries ago with a rudely made wood floor strewn with herbs giving off a delightful fragrance as I walked across them, a small table with two chairs, a cot for a bed, a large cupboard, a spinning wheel that seems to oddly glow, and a cauldron in the fireplace. The woman takes one of the chairs and motions me to sit in the other. She smiles and says “I’ve been waiting for you. But, of course, you already know that.” And, somehow, I do. The minuscule piece grows to humungous size and I take a bite and moan with pleasure. “You’re welcome. Actually, every day is your birthday. Birthdays as you think of them depend on defining yourself only as an inhabitant of one day in linear time, but in this place you are of all eras, outside of time. So every day is your birthday.” “I see,” I reply, though I was still a little confused. “Who are you exactly?” I tried to ask in a pleasant and not contentious or judgmental tone. “I am the Keeper of No Time and I arrived here on the sweep of the Northern Lights you just saw,” She replies. We stare at each other in silence for a moment because, well, what could one say after hearing that? Finally, she explains. “You were just wondering what you should do to respond appropriately to your moment in history. I know a lot of people think that the answer to this question is only revealed to a somehow more enlightened elite after several lifetimes of seeking. But, really, everything you need to know is all around you, right now. There is, in fact, nothing else that you know better.” I was puzzled. [Author’s Note: In July 2017, I set out on a 4 month pilgrimage to the Unites States, Italy, France, Spain, Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt. I name it a “pilgrimage” because my main focus is what I call “visiting with the Grandmothers”, although I also encountered many other wonderful people and places. This series of Photo Essays is an invitation for you to visit with the Grandmothers I met on my journey . . .] Jordan Bedouin camps, goats, huge fortified castles with underground tunnels, figs straight off the tree, ancient ruins, standing stone circles, cave houses . . . Visiting with the Grandmothers in Amman (Jordan Archaeological Museum and National Archaeological Museum). The “G” word – Goddess – is rarely used in museums here. More often the description is: “Figurine possible representing a deity.” There are very few figurines on display, and the explanation given is the unregulated looting of archaeological sites for treasure. It was good to find these . . . Madaba is located in central Jordan, 30 kilometres south-west of Amman. Hidden away in the hills near Madaba are hundreds of dolmens and menhirs dated to 3500 BCE. The sites are not easy to find and are not looked after. On adjacent hillsides near a busy quarry only goats and donkeys now visit the remains of stone circles opposite dolmens and caves. Dolmens are single-chambered megalithic structures, usually consisting of two or more vertical megaliths supporting a large flat horizontal capstone – the capstone on this one is the size of a small car. Petra is mainly recognised as the centre of Nabataean culture for about 600 years from c500 BCE. Archaeologists have also found items in a rock shelter dated to c10,000 BCE and a Neolithic village from the 7th Millennium. The Goddesses honoured at Petra were Al-Uzza and Allat, although there is little evidence of them now. On the upper level of the famous “Treasury” facade are bare-breated Amazons, winged Victories, and a central figure of Isis. Meet Mago Contributor Kaalii Cargill
(Art) Painting Taera, Goddess of the Earth By Elaine Drew

In the late 90s, when my husband began talking about creating his own mythology, he came up with its core concepts. This would be an earth-centered mythology, and its principal goddess would be called Taera. She would represent the earth and its life. As the mythology’s illuminator, my first task was to depict this deity. In today’s post I would like to show you how the images of this goddess started to develop. In a future post I’ll show how they matured. My first attempt, T for Taera, was inspired by illuminated manuscripts. The figure of the goddess is arranged so that her outstretched arms form the top of the initial T; her body forms its vertical stroke before spiraling into the universe that gave birth to the earth. She offers an an apple symbolizing awareness to a woman representing humanity. Surrounding the goddess are images representing life: flowers, eggs, fallopian tubes, DNA, and humans. The image was painted in watercolor and gouache, with the gold background behind Taera built up with gesso and pastiglia covered in gold leaf. In the second image, Taera Seeds the Ocean, I am attempting to illustrate one of our goals with the Taeran mythology, which is to incorporate scientific fact. This image represents our creation myth: Taera tosses DNA into the primordial ocean, seeding the planet with life. The painting’s border incorporates the spirals of DNA, and the gold scribbles around its edges are meant to evoke the characters of an ancient, unknown language. The image was painted in egg tempera on a gessoed panel, with embellishments of gold leaf. The third image, Dancing the Dance of Life, shows an exuberant Taera surrounded by her creatures, who dance with the joy of life. The frame around the dancers represents the forest; the sun a life-giving force. This image was painted with egg tempera on gessoed plywood. As we worked to develop our mythology, I worked to find ways to express its meaning and values. This is an on-going process. In a future post I’ll show other iterations of this important goddess.
(Prose and Shamanic Journeying) Season of Hibernation and Seeing – A Journey in Chalk by Claire Dorey

Art by Clair Dorey The sky is vast and tempestuous. I’m at Stonehenge, standing face to face with huge upright and toppled stones, pondering 5,000 years of touch that wore rock smooth like whale skin. Lichens bristle where hands can’t reach. This is a place of old magic and visions. Bitter winds slash across the chalk plain, ice-whips sifting out mind clutter, opening up ancient conversations with a long dead Shaman. She is buried in the seated position, in a mound, waiting to be found, her story waiting to be told. She sits next to a man, lying on his back, who may have been the ‘Year King’. Like Lilith, she wants us to know her head remains higher than his. This energy is still part of the psycho-emotional landscape here. I’m tuning in to see where she takes me. “When the air is clean and cold it is impossible to be anything other than present,” she whispers. Her shadow drifts between the stones. Cloak of owl, veil of teeth, necklace of bones rattling a rhythm, deer antler antennae missing nothing. In the season of hibernation and dreaming it is the doe who keeps her horns. Shaman sees the world through an animal eye. Nostrils twitch. Scent of wolf. Mask of soot. Blade of flint. Death is watching, hiding in the night, waiting for stragglers who fall asleep in the snow. She is the Winter Deer and Alchemist, a gold-worker, creating with light and fire and flaming, liquefied metal to produce beautiful things. Perhaps the long forgotten Goddess, residing here, is an ancestor of light and metal-worker Brigid, in Her Winter Hag aspect. The ancestral flame illuminates stories of other Light Keepers – guardians of the ‘Spark of Creation’. The patriarch seized ownership of the story of fire, banishing the female fire spirit to the fogs of the forgotten. Brigid was canonised. Hestia was domesticated and the Vestal Virgins were whipped if the flame went out. The punishment for being sexually active was to be buried alive. Shaman chalks my eyes and I see the Neolithic past through a pin-hole in time. A diaspora descends – a festival – a ‘coming together’ of time and place and common purpose. Fire spinners, shamans, priestesses, hog roasters, story tellers, healers and drummers move in the folds of the shadows, back lit by blood-red, bone-fires raging on the horizon. Scents of resin and pheromones mingle in the mist. Life force is celebrated in all it’s beauty and pyrotechnic bloodiness. When pleasure is gone death rushes in. This was never a place of static ceremony. Slither of dawn. Spark of sun. “The transcendent mechanism of the awakening.” – Anais Nin. Laser precise, a sunbeam stirs the megalith from slumber. Circle of trilithon gateways amplifying a spiralling mass of celestial harmonics, these slabs of rock talk of a reciprocity of opposites. This is where the Cretaceous East meets the Jurassic West. Head in the sky, roots piercing the soil, right down there in the guts of it, it’s a chthonic stabbing of Mother Earth, in what is often described as spearing the serpent. According to tests done at nearby Avebury Henge the electro-magnetic force within the stone circle is strongest in daytime, with energy resting at night. Solstice could be a powerful time for waking or subduing the latent power of the megalith. Photo copyrighted by Claire Dorey Is it all about the head space? Are Stone Circles Neolithic particle colliders for the human soul, drawing down cosmic energy, drawing up Earth energy, altering consciousness, opening the pineal gland, creating order from chaos, or creating chaos from order, merging auric fields with all matter? “The millions of particles of magnetite floating inside the skull and the pineal gland [are] sensitive to geomagnetic fields [leading] to the creation of the hallucinogen DMT.” – They’re Alive! Megalithic Sites Are More than Just Stone, Ancient Origins. We focus on the megaliths but not much attention is given to the sacred Earth they stand upon because we have moved away from the Earth Religions. I didn’t think I’d be pondering chalk pits but this is where Shaman guides me. Stonehenge stands upon a chalk plateau. Silbury Hill is built of chalk. Avebury Henge is encircled by a chalk bank and ditch. Before the grass grew over, these sacred earthworks must have dazzled in sun and moon light. Chalk was carved into precious artefacts, including drums and tablets. The ‘disputed’ Chalk Goddess (Grimes Graves, Norfolk) was found on a chalk alter in a flint mine. Her spherical, Full Moon, Earth Mother body swells with the primordial, chalk magic that shaped the landscape. Why did Neolithic people dig a vast arc of cavernous pits encircling nearby Durrington Walls? Were these chthonic piercings used as fire pits, purifying the boundaries of sacred space with chalk and flame, amplifying the energy of whatever took place here? Did the 56 chalk pits at Stonehenge (Aubrey Holes) also harness Earth Magic? I may never understand the Neolithic psyche but I can explore other spiritual practices to see what they do. In alternative healing, chalk is considered grounding and purifying, whilst enhancing out-of-body experiences, spirit guide connection and psychic powers. In spell-craft chalk is used for drawing boundaries. In Edo and Igbo communities sacred chalk is used in birth and death rituals. “Chalk around the eyes signifies an ability to see beyond the visible world and into the world of the spirits.” – Paul Basu, Glory Chika-Kanu, Nzu, orhue, scared chalk, Re-Entanglements. When nature dies back, the ‘winter wait’ is the time for shamanic journeying into the collective womb consciousness. I wonder if, when they dug right down into the bare, winter-bones of those chalk pits, using deer antlers to carve deep into the folds of Mother Earth, Shaman presided over purifying ritual burials and exhumations. Perhaps the living also experienced what it is like to hibernate below ground, like Persephone did, learning about stillness, listening to Mother Earth. “Dig up all that you buried,” says Shaman. …

Helen Hye-Sook Hwang I have known Dr. Kaalii Cargill for more than a decade. Kaalii came to The Mago Work through the first volume of She Rises: Goddess Feminist Activist Spirituality trilogy and stayed as a volunteer throughout other major projects of The Mago Work thereafter. In fact, Kaalii, as co-editor with me, formatted the manuscript and published She Rises Volume 1 by Mago Books and taught me how to use Amazon’s publishing platform for the publication of Mago Books. I was attracted to her life’s project, Soul Centered Psychotherapy, but did not have an opportunity to learn more about it. I am grateful that you answered my question about it here. It is my honor and joy that we have completed this e-interview at this point in our life’s journeys.Your below account on Soul Centered Psychotherapy is a new perspective that I have not heard elsewhere when it comes to therapy. “In this sense, therapy is not about fixing something that is broken but about attending to the rich language of the soul as it manifests in our day to day lives. Part of this is being open to enchantment – the sense of mystery in which we find value, love, and union with the world around us by attending to the rhythms and cycles of nature, the moon, the seasons, and our own mind-body systems.” I can see that your Soul Centered Psychotherapy is aligned with my research and advocacy of Ceto-Magoism (the Cetacean-Caused Way of the Creatrix) referring to the mytho-historical-cultural expression of the matriversal (of maternally perceived universe) soteriology. Methodologically, Soul Centered Psychotherapy is a practical way of doing Ceto-Magoist research for individuals, which aim at solid and profound transformation. Hwang You have founded and operated The Kairos Center and Soul Centered Psychotherapy for many years. Tell us about them and how they have influenced your own life? Kaalii Cargill The Kairos Centre came into being as a response to dissatisfaction with the sort of counselling and psychotherapy that was most commonly available in the late 1980s in Australia. Kairos is a word from ancient Greek meaning ‘the right or critical moment’, in contrast with Chronos, which means ‘chronological or sequential time’. Kairos is the soul’s timing rather than the timing of the logical mind. I worked with my partner Andrew to develop a therapeutic approach that valued relationship, mindfulness, embodied experience, the energetic field, meaning, enchantment, and the sacred – we called it Soul Centred Psychotherapy. This was at a time when the word “soul” had not been used so ubiquitously in advertising and mainstream culture. Western culture has traditionally valued mind and spirit, as in science and organised religion, and neglected soul, as in the sacred, embodied experience of being human. We offered training in Soul Centred Psychotherapy for 30 years. Soul Centred Psychotherapy attends to the human experience through the everyday stuff of life: our thoughts, emotions, body sensations and symptoms, and the relationships we have with others and the world. Value, meaning, and healing emerge from within each person’s unique process of inner work rather than from any external ideal of health, wealth, or happiness. In this sense, therapy is not about fixing something that is broken but about attending to the rich language of the soul as it manifests in our day to day lives. Part of this is being open to enchantment – the sense of mystery in which we find value, love, and union with the world around us by attending to the rhythms and cycles of nature, the moon, the seasons, and our own mind-body systems. The sacred aspect of the work involves meaning, honouring, and enchantment. This is similar to Jung’s idea of the Self as the central organising principle of the psyche, as well as the idea of the Anima Mundi or World Soul. The system of magic in these novels is based on the alchemical and Wiccan traditions of working with the elements of Air, Fire, Water, Earth. The Warrior Queen Chronicles is a fantasy trilogy based in Nordic mythology – co authored with Kellianna Girouard, an American Neo-Celtic singer and songwriter whose performances of song and chant are inspired by myth, magic, sacred places and ancient times. Daughters of Time is a speculative/historical novel that asks “What if . . .?” What if Abraham, father of the three faiths, had conceived a child with a priestess before the fall of ancient Sumer? What if the child’s descendants were prophesied to carry balance (Goddess) through two millennia to the present day? What if an ancient prophecy can save the World? Daughters of Time is interwoven with archaeological, historical, and mythological details that reveal the ancient world, following a line of daughters and the way of Goddess through ancient Sumer, Egypt, and Jerusalem, and into the modern world. Anne Wilkerson Allen: I think Ireland recently had something in the news about this… Ireland apologizes for Catholic laundry scandal Ireland’s premier has issued a state apology to the thousands of Irish women who spent years working without pay in prison-style laundries run by Catholic nuns. Former residents of the now-defunct Magdalene Laundries have campaigned for the past decade to get the government to apologize and pay compensation to an estimated 1,000 survivors of the workhouses. Two weeks ago the Irish government published an investigation into the state’s role in overseeing the laundries. Another friend told me that he knew one of the sisters of charity and that she told him they were encouraged to flog themselves on a regular basis….sick sick sick Anne Wilkerson Allen: This is why I have a problem with the mentality that says evil exists to teach us something…..that suffering exists to highlight our joy….there is just something WRONG with that. “Mago” tradition Magoism is a new word to the modern Western vocabulary, yet it has its linguistic roots in many parts of the globe and in an ancient knowledge and know-how almost lost. Dr Helen Hwang determinedly and methodically is excavating the little-understood historical Mother-Goddess knowledge of Korea, and its traditions, the Mago, and Magoism, and in doing so is unlocking another previously invisible door, and replacing another ripped-off corner of the global map of significant, almost-lost tradition and forgotten knowledge. This is a most welcomed prospect. The newness of this discovery for those who learn of it fills them with excitement because every step to remember the ancient ways, particularly the lost Goddess ways, and those ways that hint of Source, are crucial to humanity remembering itself. Moderns have become accustomed to modes of mind that strip the soul and psyche of finer attunement to earth, sea, stars and each other. This renders most adrift on a sea of seeming limitless freedoms, to be picked up by any technological hook that would substitute for inner knowing. The map becomes the new computer wiring, insurance policy or bank regulation to follow. But once we scrape from our psyches the encrustation of mind most moderns have settled with (which calcifies the innate senses and finer antennae of knowing, emboldening technologically driven modes of mind and being to take their place), then we are on our way to a vivifying recollection. This group is called Mago Circle and it was founded by my dear friend, “sister” and colleague, Helen Hwang. Helen’s work and commitment to restoring Mago, Ancestral Mother Goddess, to her rightful place as progenitor and creatrix of the Korean people, has not only been admirable but truly critical during a time when we are in real need for inspiration from thought leaders and scholars with a solid foundation in the arts and research of the sacred feminine. As you know, with the roots of Korean shamanism in the realm of women, it makes perfect sense that Korean spirituality must also have sprung within the womb of Woman … the great cosmic goddess, Mago. While Helen’s work is very much grounded in meticulous research — showcasing Korea to the rest of the world in all of Her depth, herstory, and vibrance — it is more importantly, founded in genuine intentions of love, transparency, and humility. I know that Helen can explain the depth, breadth, and height of her work much better than me so I think it will be better to have her directly share more of herself with you; what I simply hope to do through this letter is perhaps help serve as a familiar hand …. reaching out to you and letting you know that your presence and blessings as a well-regarded and much-admired Korean female shaman and scholar would be much appreciated in Mago Circle. Do you remember, X, … you once told me … about 20 years ago: “Sanity is insanity with a focus.” These words I still remember and hold true … they have helped me through times that were truly dismal and chaotic in my life, and with this reassuring and transformational way of looking at myself, looking at my life, looking at the world, I have made it through. My life continues to have its share of insanity, but I know that with focus, all sanity is restored. I know that my letter to you today may feel unexpected and random (especially after not having seen each other for so, so long), but as you know, somehow, life brings us through twists and turns that may seem awkward and strange at first, but upon retrospect, all makes complete sense. Hence love, kindness, nurturing and all that is beautiful would prevail everywhere. Am I sounding too idealistic or am I pining for a utopian society that is just not possible? But in theory, it is possible to return to the spirit of Mother, manifest in everything in nature and in our thoughts and actions. During those beginnings of what is now called “the second wave of feminism,” everything was new to us and everything was mushed together — the political, the economic, the intellectual, the emotional, the spiritual. I liked that a lot; it felt as if all the parts of myself were coming together. During that time, I learned something crucial the imagery and concepts of patriarchal religion justify and are embedded in the material structures of oppression. I don’t know which came first, institutionalized oppression (of everyone; I’m not speaking here only of women) or the religious expression of that oppression. All I’m certain of is that patriarchal religion permeates, for example, the Oxford English Dictionary, which I use all the time, in conjunction with Websters’ First New Intergalactic Wickedary of the English Language, conjured by Mary Daly in cahoots with Jane Caputi.

Artful Ceremonial Expression by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This article is an edited excerpt from Chapter 7 of the author’s book PaGaian Cosmology: Re-inventing Earth-based Goddess Religion. I always wore a special headpiece for the Seasonal ceremonies when I facilitated them over the years, and I feel that any participant may do so, not just the main celebrant. My ceremonial headpiece with its changing and continuous Seasonal decoration took on increasing significance over the years; it became a personal central representation of the year-long ceremonial art process of creating, destroying and re-creating. For the research period of my doctoral studies particularly, when I was documenting the process, I realised that this headpiece came to represent for me the essence of “She” – as Changing One, yet ever as Presence – as I was coming to know Her. In my journal for the Mabon/Autumn Equinox process notes one year I wrote: As I pace the circle with the Mabon headpiece in the centre, I see “Her” as She has been through the Seasons … the black and gold of Samhain, the deep red, white and evergreen of Winter, the white and blue of Imbolc, the flowers of Eostar, the rainbow ribbons of Beltane, the roses of Summer, the seed pods and wheat of Lammas, and now the Autumn leaves. I see in my mind’s eye, and feel, Her changes. I am learning … The Mother knowledge grows within me. The headpiece, the wreath, the altar, the house decorations, all participate in the ceremony: they are part of the learning, the method, the relationship – similar to how one might bring flowers and gifts of significance to a loved one at special moments. Then further, the removal and re-creation of the decorations are part of the learning – an active witness to transformation through time.
(Essay) Winter Solstice/Yule within the Creative Cosmos by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an edited excerpt from Chapter 5 of the author’s book A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony. Dates for Winter Solstice/Yule Southern Hemisphere – June 20 – 23. Northern Hemisphere – December 20 – 23 This Seasonal Moment is the ripe fullness of the Dark Womb and it is a gateway between dark and light. It is a Birthing Place – into differentiated being. Whereas Samhain/Deep Autumn is a dark conceiving Space, it flows into the Winter Solstice dark birthing Place – a dynamic Place of Being, a Sacred Interchange. This Seasonal Moment of Winter Solstice is the peaking of the dark space – the fullness of the dark, within which being and action arise. It is the peaking of emptiness, which is a fullness. As cosmologist Brian Swimme describes: the empty “ground of being … retains no thing.” It is “Ultimate Generosity.”[i] In Vajrayana Buddhism, Space is associated with Prajna/wisdom – out of which Upaya/compassionate action arises. Space is highly positive – something to be developed, so appropriate action may develop spontaneously and blissfully.[ii] In Old European Indigenous understandings, the dark and the night were valued at least as much as light, if not more so: time was counted by the number of nights, as in ‘fortnights,’ and a ‘day’ included both dark and light parts … it was ‘di-urnal’. I have been careful with my language about that inclusion in the ceremonial ‘Statement of Purpose’ for each Seasonal Moment. This awareness is resonant with modern Western scientific perceptions about the nature of the Universe: that it is seventy-three percent “dark energy,” twenty-three precent “dark matter,” four percent “ordinary matter.”[iii] The truth is that we live within this darkness: it is the Ground of all Being. In Pagan traditions since Celtic times, and in many other cultural traditions, Winter Solstice has been celebrated as the birth of the God; and in Christian tradition since about the fourth century C.E., as the birth of the saviour. But there are deeper ways of understanding what is being born: that is, who or what the “saviour” is. In the Gospel of Thomas, which was not selected for biblical canon, it says: “If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you.”[iv] This then may be the Divine Child, the “Saviour”: it may be expressed as the new Being forming in the Cosmogonic Womb,[v] who will be born. We may celebrate the birth of the new Being, which /who is always beyond us, beyond our knowing … yet is within us, burgeoning within us – and within Gaia. What will save us is already present within – forming within us. The Winter Solstice story may emphasize that what is born, is within each one – the “Divine” is not “out there”: it may be said, and expressed ceremoniously, that we are each Creator and Created. We may imagine ourselves as the in-utero foetus – an image we might have access to these days from a sonar-scan during pregnancy. This image presents a truth about Being: we are this, and it is within us, within this moment. Every moment is pregnant with the new. It will be birthed when holy darkness is full. Part of what is required is having the eyes to see the “new bone forming in flesh,” scraping our eyes “clear of learned cataracts,”[vi] seeing with fresh eyes. That is what the fullness of the Dark offers – a freshening of our eyes to see the new. And the process of Creation is always reciprocal: we are Creator and Created simultaneously, in a “ngapartji-ngapartji”[vii] way. We are in-formed by that which we form. In Earth-based religious practice, the ubiquitous icon of Mother and Child – Creator and Created – expresses something essential about the Universe itself … the “motherhood” we are all born within. It expresses the essential communion experience that this Cosmos is, the innate and holy Care that it takes, and the reciprocal nature of it. We cannot touch without being touched at the same time.[viii] We may realize that Cosmogenesis – the entire Unfolding of the Cosmos – is essentially relational: our experience tells us this is so. The image of The Birth of the Goddess on the front cover of my book PaGaian Cosmology expresses that reciprocity for me, how we may birth each other and the healing/wholing in that exchange. It is a Sacred Interchange. And it is what this Event of existence seems to be about – deep communion, which both Solstices express. Babylonian Goddess, Ur 4000-3500 BCE. Adele Getty, Goddess, 33. Birthing is not often an easy process – for the birthgiver nor for the birthed one: it is a shamanic act requiring strength of bodymind, attention, courage, and focus of the mother, and resilience and courage to be of the new young one. Birthgiving is the original place of ‘heroics,’ which many cultures of the world have never forgotten, perhaps therefore better termed as “heraics.” Patriarchal adaptations of the story of this Seasonal Moment usually miss the Creative Act of birthgiving completely, usually being pre-occupied with the “virgin” nature of the Mother which is interpreted as having an “intact hymen.” The focus of the patriarchal adaptation of the Winter Solstice story is the Child as “saviour”: even the Mother gazes at the Child in most Christian icons, while in more ancient images Her eyes are direct and expressive of Her integrity as Creator. Poetry of the Season may be expressed in this way: This is the time when the light part of day is longest. You are invited to celebrate SUMMER SOLSTICE Light reaches Her fullness, and yet… She turns, and the seed of Darkness is born. This is the Season of blossom and thorn – for pouring forth the Gift of Being. The story of Old tells that on this day Beloved and Lover dissolve into the single Song of ecstasy – that moves the worlds. Self expands in the bliss of creativity. Sun ripens in us: we are the Bread of Life. We celebrate Her deep Communion and Reciprocity. Samhain: Stepping Wisely through the Open Door by Carolyn Lee Boyd

Day of the Dead altar, via Wikimedia Commons According to Celtic tradition, on Samhain (October 31 for those in the north and April 30 for those in the south) the doors between the human and spirit worlds open. Faeries, demons, and spirits of the dead pour out of the Otherworld to walk the Earth. In the past, some would try to hurry ghosts past their houses or ward off evil spirits by setting jack o’lanterns in their windows. They avoided going outside, especially past cemeteries, lest they be snatched away to the Otherworld. In ancient times, some offered sacrifices to propitiate deities. However, others have invited in the souls of friends and family who have passed away. In Brittany, according to W.Y. Evans-Wentz’s Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries, people would provide “a feast and entertainment for them of curded-milk, hot pancakes, and cider, served on the family table covered with a fresh white tablecloth, and to supply music” which “the dead come to enjoy with their friends” (p. 218). Other cultures also have such welcoming traditions. In Korea, as so beautifully described by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang in her posts about her family’s mourning for her father (Part I and Part II), in Mexico on the Day of the Dead, and elsewhere, food and flowers are brought to cemeteries to honor those no longer in the realm of the living. Many of us live in a society where death is pushed out of sight and Samhain’s sacred traditions have devolved into Halloween, a commercialized children’s holiday. Still, it seems to me that the pandemic, climate catastrophes, and war have made death much more present in our everyday thoughts over the past couple of years than before, so perhaps this year’s Samhain offers us the opportunity to re-examine Celtic and other practices of the past and present to see what insights and meaning they may have for us. Whether you believe that the Otherworld can wreak havoc on us at Samhain or not, the realm where spirits dwell clearly has power. Its allure can take us away from focusing on mundane, daily challenges or, more positively, open our eyes to the value of relating to forces that can give richness and meaning to our lives. At the same time, we must remember that each domain has its own power. We can use our physical bodies in beneficial ways that those in the Otherworld cannot. We must respect the power of the Otherworld as well as our own. Some kinds of healing are only possible when we welcome those from the Otherworld into our lives in a healthy way, whether through holiday visits or every day through remembrance, meditation, prayer, or other means. I’m of an age when many of my beloveds are in the Otherworld and so I am beginning to find that the idea of being able to sit with someone I have lost is cause not for fear, but rather joy and comfort. Perhaps those who have longstanding wounds from the past can heal by remembering those we have lost at Samhain and forgiving them or ourselves or realizing that we are no longer bound to those who have hurt us and are now gone. Samhain can also reassure us of the truth of our intuitive sense that our beloveds who we grieve are with us still, in some way, on this night and throughout the year. When we participate in the celebration of Samhain’s opening of doors to the Otherworld, if only for a day, we are honoring our own participation into the great cycle of life, death, and rebirth. We are expanding our vision of ourselves to be more than our bodies on the Earth and experiencing ourselves as connected to many realms, seen and unseen, spirit and human. We are accepting that at some time we will also become ancestors, with all the responsibility that entails and the fulfillment of taking our place in the complex matrix of being that is our universe. When we interact with the souls of those we have lost in ways that are healthy for us, however we may choose and believe that happens, we can also better celebrate the realm of the living. Just as we may listen in various ways for positive messages from those whom we have lost, we can ensure that we are expressing important guidance to those who will come after us by who we are and how we live our lives. We can express that life is worth living, even with all its traumas, and that we respect both the boundaries and the doors between the worlds so that we may continue living fully in our physical bodies on our beautiful, awe-inspiring Earth. I hope my message to my descendants will be: Love your lives. Build on what we have done and do better. Leave behind what we left you that no longer serves. If you feel alone, remember that you have thousands of generations of mothers sending you unconditional love and also generations of women coming after you eager to pick up where you left off. According to Mary Condren in The Serpent and the Goddess, in the most ancient times, “Samhain had been primarily a harvest feast celebrating the successful growth and gathering of the fruits of the past year” (p. 36). While we in the north are coming into the season of death, those in the south are experiencing Beltane, the first moments of spring when the doors between the worlds are also open. The eternal cycle of life, death, and regeneration turns again. Cast in 771, the bell reenacts the music of whales to remind people of the Female Beginning, the self-creative power innate all beings. Today is Day 2 of the New Year in the reconstructed Magoist Calendar characterized by 13 months per year and 28 days per month. We are heading toward the Solstice that falls on Dec. 21/22 (Day 5 of the first month in the Magoist Calendar), which happens to be the day of the first full moon of Year 2. We just passed Year 1 or 5915 Magoma Era (the Gregorian 2018). For Year 1, we had the New Year Day on December 18 of 2017, the first new moon day before the December Solstice. That makes December 18 of 2017 our lunation 1, the first lunar year that the reconstructed Magoist Calendar determines its first day of the Year 1! Although relatively short in history, the Mago Work began to celebrate the Nine Day Mago Celebration on the day of December Solstice annually since 2015. With the reconstructed Magoist Calendar, we placed it in its due timeframe, the Ninth Month and the Ninth Day, which fell on August 8, 2018 (US PST) and celebrated it for the first time according to the Magoist Calendar. Apparently, this had to be a mid-Summer event. This left us with another seasonal event, the New Year/Solstice Celebration. A few from around the globe (Germany, Korea, Italy and the US) participated in it or hosted their own local vigils. The Korean temple bell is the key symbol for the Magoist Calendar as well as the Magoist Cosmogony. It is not a coincidence that it is struck on the midnight of the New Year’s Eve. It is Korean tradition that even modern Koreans gather at the bell tower in Seoul to hear the sound of the bell at midnight. And these bells are gigantic weighing 19 tons in the case of the Emile Bell. That this convention has an ancient Magoist root remains esoteric. For not only they strike the bell 28 times in the evening indicating the 28 lunar stations that the Moon stops by in the sky throughout the year (please read below what the 28 day lunar journey means and how it is represented by women). But also the Korean temple bell is no mere acoustic device to play the beautiful sound only. (Mago Almanac Excerpt 5) Introducing the Magoist Calendar by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang

Mago Almanac: 13 Month 28 Day Calendar (Book A) Free PDF available at Mago Bookstore. THE 28-13-7 INTERPLAY How does the number, 28 (days), for the lunar cycle come about? Why is it 28 days and not 29 or 30, the latter implicated in the traditional lunar calendar of East Asia? It appears that 28 days is a value closer to the moon’s sidereal period (about 27.3 days) than the synodic period (about 29.5 days). Or is it that 28 days points to the median between the synodic lunar cycle and the sidereal lunar cycle? To answer these questions, it is important to note that a value in the Mago Time captures an inter-cosmic biological cusp/juncture derived from the matrix of sonic numerology. Distinguished from the patriarchal measure of time fixated into a solipsistic space, it makes visible the interconnectedness of all bodies. It never stands as an isolated single occasion. The 28 day, 13 month calendar has to do with how we perceive the moon. There are two ways of understanding the lunar cycle; the sidereal period and the synodic period (see Figure 2). The synodic period refers to the time, about 29.5 days, that we on earth see the moon complete one round of revolution, e.g. from the full moon to the full moon. In contrast, the sidereal period refers to the actual time, about 27.3 days, that the moon takes to complete one round of revolution. While the synodic time is measured relative to the Earth (the observer’s position is on earth), the sidereal time is measured relative to the distant “fixed” stars (the observer’s position is far out at the distant stars). Since the distant stars are considered at rest, the sidereal period is taken as a universal value, not affected by the location of the viewer, we on earth. There is, apparently, a discrepancy between the lunar cycle that we on earth see the moon return to the same phase and the lunar cycle that the moon actually completes a revolution. The former is based on our observation of the moon’s phases, whereas the latter is based on the moon’s actual orbital motions. The two differs basically because all celestial bodies, the moon, earth, and sun, in the solar system are in motion. It is not just the moon that we watch revolving but Earth also revolves around the sun. We are watching the movement of the moon on a moving vehicle, earth, so to speak. Therefore, the moon has to travel about 2 more days in order for us on earth to see it in the same phase (see the green portion in Figure 2 part). At the position A of the moon in Figure 2, the moon is in line with the sun and the distant stars, which is a new moon. In the position of B (the new moon), the moon is in line with the sun but not with the distant stars. The right hand line of the green portion in line with the distant stars is where the moon started as a new moon. The moon has traveled about 2 more days to be in line with the sun. That is why the synodic period is about 2 days longer than the sidereal period. When it comes to “the lunar calendar”, moderns tend to think of it as the waxing and waning phases of the moon (29.5 days, the synodic period). The problem lies in that, following the synodic period, people see nothing beyond the moon’s phases. They overlook the fact that the moon rotates and revolves on its own axis and around the earth approximately 13 degrees every day. The synodic lunisolar calendar is a navel-gazing vision. Attending to the moon’s phases may seem benign. However, that is a planned pitfall; the synodic lunisolar calendar with 12 months in a year is here to supersede the 28 day, 13 month gynocentric calendar. Its irregularity with the number of days in a month (29 or 30 days with about 11 extra days for intercalation) is an inherently critical flaw. Its inaccuracy when incorporated within the solar annual calendar (approximately 365.25 days) stands out. Seen below in the table, the synodic lunar track results in as many leap days as a total of 44 days for 4 years, whereas the sidereal lunar track has 2 days for 4 years. The synodic lunisolar calendar undercuts the moon’s given capacity – guiding earthly beings into the intergalactic voyage of WE/HERE/NOW. In it, both the moon and women are, glorified and objectified by the viewer, cast under the male voyeuristic eye. On the contrary, the sidereal lunisolar calendar, based on the cyclic synchrony between the moon and women, offers the lens to the interconnectedness of all bodies in the universe. Through the comparative study of ancient cultures of Babylon, Arabia, India and China, W. B. Yeats (1865-1939) observes the substantive difference in dynamic between the two lunation tracks, the synodic and the sidereal. He notes that the moon’s orbital motion, apart from the sun’s, charts out the celestial sphere as the 28 Mansions. I have learned that the 28 Mansions or 28 Constellations of the Moon is a popular form of the 28 day and 13 month Magoist calendar, widely circulated among East Asians especially Koreans from the ancient time. [Editor’s note: Numbers of endnotes differ from the original ones in the article] Claiming the Budoji (Epic of the Emblem City) as a Principal Text of Magoism The Budoji (Epic of the Emblem City) stands out from other sources for its systemic and refined mytho-historical account of Old Magoism. Alleged to have been written in between the late fourth and early fifth century of Silla Korea (57 BCE-918 CE), the Budoji is the Sillan testimony to the history of Budo (Emblem City), a replica of Mago’s Citadel. It is a book that summons ancient Koreans to remember the glorious history of their Magoist ancestors particularly Budo, better known as Dangun Choson Korea (2333 BEC-232 BEC). Budo’s construction and administration in East Asia for nearly two millennia are attributed to the leadership of Imgeom or Dangun. She is the third of the triad sovereigns of Old Magoism after Hanin and Hanung. Designating the civilization of Budo as a direct successor of its previous civilization Sinsi (Divine Market) attributed to the leadership of Hanung, the Budoji traces the Magoist pedigree of pre-patriarchal civilizations ultimately back to Mago and her paradisiacal community, Mago’s Citadel.[i] Composed of thirty-three chapters, its epical narrative is replete with unheard but resonant concepts and symbols such as cosmic music, triad, parthenogenesis, mountain paradisiacal community, genealogy, and so on. Among others, the Budoji unleashes one most fascinating cosmogonic account yet-to-be-known, the story of Mago’s beginning.[ii] Mago, emerged by the cosmic music alongside the stars in the primordial time, began her procreation. Then she initiates the natural process of self-creation. She had her offspring to procreate and asked them to administer the paradisiacal community in Mago’s Citadel. She is the cosmic being who listens to the rise and fall of the cosmic music. The primary task of Mago’s community was to produce Earthly musical resonance that corresponds with the music of the universe. The sonic balance between the universe and the Earth is absolutely essential to the survival and prosperity of the earthly community.[iii] The Budoji not only makes it possible to recognize a large corpus of transnational primary sources as coherent within the context of Magoism but also enables the researcher to understand erosion, variation, and mutation wrought on individual data in the course of history. Budoji’s mytho-historical framework is particularly crucial in assessing the large number of folkloric and topological data that are otherwise seen anomalous or corrupted. For example, the stories that Mago lived in a rock or Mago carried large boulders on her limbs and built megalithic structures find resonance in Budoji’s narratives. Its accounts concerning rocks and landmasses are too complex to present here. Some examples are: Mago began her act of creation by moving and dropping a heavenly landmass and into heavenly water; Magoist sovereigns became rocks that made resonating sounds upon death. In short, Magoism animates pre-Chinese history of East Asia otherwise labeled as “primitive societies.” It entertains the idea that animism and shamanism are not isolated practices but the older religious forms of Magoism.

With that, we are able to tap Magoist days into Gregorian days that we moderns use. Then, how do we bring down a Magoist time in the scheme of the Gregorian time? How do we determine the onset of New Year in the Magoist Calendar? When would be the midnight of New Year in Year 1? That requires a translation of Mago time into Gregorian time. We can designate midnight as a midpoint in time equidistant from the sunset of New Year’s Eve to the sunrise of New Year. As local times vary around the globe, the midnight of New Year varies in states and cities. In Los Angeles, California USA, the first Magoist midnight falls on 23:29 on December 17, 2017 for Year 1. That would be 07:29 on December 18, 2017 in UTC.
