Miko Kami Dogu is a clay figurine from the Jomon period of Japan. Figurines appear to have been used ritually for fertility, safe childbirth, and good health. Dogu, found in burial pits, were intended to accompany the dead person into the afterlife. Miko is an ancient term for a female shaman and her large eyes could indicate a trance state. (Essay 2) Body Prayer by Mary Petiet

Julian knew harrowing times of uncertainty and found within them a quiet place of connection to divine love. She saw bubonic plague ravage Europe, killing half the population of Norwich, and historians speculate that she lost her own husband and children to the contagion. She saw political upheaval as England endured the Hundred Years war and was rocked by a series of peasant revolts, the largest led by Wat Tyler in 1381, as the people tried to wrest a more equal distribution of power and resources from the nobility. In 1378 she saw the church begin the Great Schism, a 68 year split between two pontificates, adding further disruption to an already hectic situation. She suffered an unnamed sickness so severe at age 30 that last rites were read, yet she revived, entered religious orders, and began to write of the profound visions she received during her illness. She is the first known English woman to have written a book.

Some excerpts are slightly edited to reflect current information.] Excerpt from Don’t Take Lying Down: Life According to the Goddess. K Cargill, 2012. Eco-feminism is very clear that there is a strong link between the denigration of nature and the denigration of the female in Western cultures.[i] I believe that there is also a link between the cultural disregard of women’s mysteries over the last 3000 years and women’s experience of feeling controlled and disempowered through their use of conventional methods of birth control. As wondrous as they can be, the discoveries of rational science are no substitute for the age-old wisdom of women’s mysteries. There are many references in the literature that suggest that birth control has, in fact, been available throughout human history, and that knowledge of this has been eradicated by social, religious, and cultural factors. In his book on post-conceptive fertility control, one Australian doctor stated that ” . . .medicine has gone to some pains to convert it (fertility control) to an institutionalised matter of tortuous complexity and recoils as much from the idea of simple, painless fertility control on request, as it did from the “heresy” of anaesthesia for childbirth during the last century.” [ii] While he is not talking about mindbody control of fertility, this doctor is making the point that things may not be what they seem in the world of conventional birth control. What if simple, self-regulated birth control were actually available to women? How would this affect our lives? To answer these questions, we need to consider how women have experienced birth control in recent times. Our dependence on medical science is poetically described by Jungian analyst, Irene Claremont de Castillejo[iii], ” . . .since the advent of Freud, man’s whole attitude towards sexuality has begun to change. It seems that he has more or less digested the apple from the tree of knowledge of good and evil given him by Eve, and, stretching out his hand to the same tree, has plucked a second apple and this time it is he who has offered it to her. He has discovered the contraceptive . . ..It was Eve who freed Adam from the blindness of nature. Now Adam had freed Eve from the inexorability of its rhythmical wheel.” I disagree. Contemporary contraceptive practices have not, in fact, freed Eve from Nature, but have, very subtly, but very surely, bound her to the relentlessness of science and linearity. Nature is not blind. She can offer a very different way of seeing. There are numerous examples from the study of linguistics that tell of people living in remote areas who have no words in their languages that are the equivalent of words familiar to people from other cultures. The interesting observation is that without the words, the colours or shapes represented by the words do not exist for these people; when people with no word for “corner” are exposed to what a native English speaker would perceive as a right angle, they see a rounded curve. When we have no word for something, it cannot be seen. It is like that with the idea of effective, self-regulated birth control before the contraceptive Pill. There have been many ways in which women across cultures have managed fertility, some more effective than others. It is, however, difficult for modern women, living in a civilised, industrial, technologically advanced culture to accept these methods. Mindbody birth control, with its implication of female reproductive autonomy and female power, seems not to exist in the English language, and is, therefore, omitted from the literature and from the realms of possibility. Yet once the concept exists, there can also be found evidence of its existence. As neuroscientist, Candace Pert, reminds us, “absence of proof is not proof of absence”.[iv] Many women recognise mindbody birth control once it is named. They talk about times when it was disastrous or inconvenient to be pregnant, and miraculously the pregnancy did not occur or spontaneously aborted. This is, therefore, something that women are just doing anyway. They just have not known in a fully conscious way what it is they are doing! This tree has completely lost its pride and joy, now lying across the wet ground, an intricate, golden mat for others to step on. Things that you do that are undignified but unavoidable. Bills need to be paid. There is no hearth to return to, no heirlooms to sell. You had hoped for something better than this, but, in truth, not in childhood, too depressed to think beyond the next year. The glistening leaves remind me of leaf collages I made as a girl, and of how I liked to iron and preserve leaves between wax paper. The barren tree like my girl’s body dancing in the wind in the backyard to my own songs, odes to autumn trees. Joys you rediscover later in life when others are taken away. (Essay 3) I Must Call Her Awe/stralia By Leslene della-Madre

After a welcoming stay with Glenys, and being able to visit sacred places in the Blue Mountains with her like “The Three Sisters” in what I saw as Awe/stralia’s version of the Grand Canyon, I traveled on to Brisbane to Susan’s lovely home in the bush. The birds, landscape and lushness all nourished my soul! The fact that Awe/stralia’s population is only 22 million people invites one into a spacious, grounded and heart-warming experience of the land. I felt this everywhere I went. I went barefoot as often as I could. (In fact, when I first arrived at Jane’s in the beginning of my adventure, I immediately removed my shoes and grounded into the earth. I believe it is this practice of “Earthing” that kept me from being jet-lagged. I never experienced it after a fifteen-hour plane trip and travel from the past to the future through a time change. Nor did I experience it upon my return.) I spent another lovely time gathering with kindred sisters in the Friday night talk and workshop. The workshop was particularly a-mazing because a beautiful Sri Lankan woman, a cancer survivor, brought the ashes of her recently deceased sister who also suffered from cancer and placed her ashes on our altar. It was one of those things that could not have been put in a schedule. It was the first time she had brought out her sister’s ashes in the presence of others beyond her family, blessing all of us with her sacred presence. With her ashes on our altar we had twelve women in physical form and one in spirit — a perfect circle of thirteen. We opened our circle sharing a grieving process with her that I felt was held by the ancestors. We bonded immediately in sacred sisterhood — as the circle of women acting as shaman. This particular workshop allowed some women, who had been unsure about coming due to feeling not quite ready because of recent transitions of loved ones in their lives, to feel held by the collective of women and to be witnessed in safe loving space. This is the tribal way of women I feel we are all longing for. Women just know how to love each other. And allow what needs to emerge in the moment. This is the experience that I like to honor as being dreamed together where any agendas of doing are surrendered.
(Essay) Exodus 1980 Revisited by Glenys Livingstone (1994)

This is the second in a three part series of old articles and papers by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D. that were written in the 1980’s and 1990’s, two of which were published at that time. The first in the series was “Notes on Leaving Christianity”, and this second essay is a very personal story of the journey out – some of what was involved for the author. The story is told and set within the context of a ceremonial meal, named as “Passout”, and imagined as a traditional annual restorative event, invoking Goddess whom all present were seeking. This essay was originally published in Women-Church: An Australian Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, Issue 15, Spring 1994. It was “Passout” 1994, the night when women friends gather to celebrate their exodus (when others around them are celebrating Holy Thursday/Passover).The women light candles, anoint each other with oil, and play women’s music that has helped birth them. Sometimes they get up and dance as the Spirit takes them. They share a meal of flatbread, bitter greens, vegetables and roast pork; finishing with a dessert that uses milk and honey. They drink lots of wine throughout the evening, as they tell their exodus stories. This was one of the women’s stories: a simple country girl, who got lost on the big freeways of the world and thought she was someone else… hopped in a big american car and went on a tour. … when the joyride ended, she came back to the poverty of her inner landscape… she was dropped off in the slums of her pain and fear that she had sought to escape.
(Essay 1) Sacred Crete: Mystery Rites and the Sacred Bull’s Transformation in the Post-Bronze Age Collapse by Jen Taylor

Dolphin Fresco / Palace of Knossos (Crete, 1700-1450 BCE) “I come from Crete over the sea’s wide back…” -Demeter / Homeric Hymn to Demeter Dynastic-era Egyptian Pharaohs hired the artists of ancient Crete to paint murals in their sacred temples. For those familiar, the art of High Bronze Age Minoan culture is stunning, considered some of “the most inspired ” of the long-gone Neolithic era, depicting “the enchantment of a fairy world.”1 One might recall the Dolphin Fresco or the palace ruins of Knossos. The unparalleled pottery techniques of the Minoans were lost at the end of the Bronze Age with the brutal Mycenaean takeover, mid-15th century BCE. Minoan pottery techniques are difficult to replicate to this day. It is long acknowledged that Roman architecture is a knock-off of Greek building works, but the Greeks are a knock-off of a knock-off: they borrowed from the Mycenaean imitation of Minoan architecture. Both Mycenaean and then Greek artisans fail to achieve Minoan feats and splendor. Some might argue with me on this, but what cannot be refuted is that Minoan archeological remains destroy the narrative that Western civilization began with the Greeks. I have never been to this fabled island of enchanted ruins, nestled in the blue waters of the Mediterranean. As Demeter desired to return, I wish to go, though I fear the longing it will stir. Can I face the testimony of the ruins? So much is lost and it requires more than a physical journey to a geographical location to recover ancient Crete. I was first alerted to this Archeo-Mythological trail as an undergrad in 1993, studying the Pre-Socratics, Homer, and Greek Tragedy. What was this Golden Age that Hesiod referred to at the onset of the Iron Age in 8th century BCE? In the beginning, the immortals who have their homes on Olympos created the golden generation of mortal people… They lived as if they were gods, their hearts free from sorrow. – Hesiod / Works and Days, lines 108-114 Around the same time, a beloved philosophy professor (Mitch Miller) pressed us in class with a tantalizing question. He asked if we had ever heard of the Eleusinian Mystery Rites. Cicero wrote of them, “We have been given a reason not only to live in joy, but also to die with better hope.”2 None of us had heard of these “Mystery Rites,” and what Professor Miller said next stunned me. He said that we should be angry about it. Then he looked around the room and stayed silent for a while. No one said a word. Something important had been lost and the writings of ancient Greece contained fragments testifying to that loss, emerging like pebbles in the moonlight now. I will always be grateful to Professor Miller for this seminal moment because the scatterings of pre-classical era-derived fragments also provide clues towards the Mystery Rites’ recovery. I have spent a lifetime searching since, and the two scholars I trust most in cleansing patriarchal overlay when looking at the origination point of the Eleusinian Mystery Rites in Bronze Age Crete are Riane Eisler and Professor Mara Keller. Each has given a lot of attention to ancient Crete in their long careers. Eisler devotes a chapter to the subject (Crete: The Essential Difference) in her paradigm-shifting book, The Chalice and the Blade. What many refer to anachronistically as Minoan, Keller has renamed Damatrian Crete in her essays and a forthcoming book.3 Minoan is the name given by Sir Arthur Evans in the first archeological excavations of the ancient civilization in the early 1900’s. The term Minoan derives from King Minos, a mythological king of Mycenaean Crete, the Iron Age war-faring, pre-Greek tribes, who destroyed and supplanted High Bronze Age, Damatrian Crete. A rose may be a rose by any other name, but not here. The domination system culture of the Mycenaeans worshipped the power of the blade, the power to take life. Damatrian Crete, what Eisler calls a partnership paradigm, worshipped the opposite, conceiving of the power to give life as sacred. The power of the womb, symbolized by a chalice, understands the rebirth that follows, and trumps death. Archeologist Nicholas Platon noted in his 1966 examinations of the ancient island, “the fear of death is almost obliterated by the ubiquitous joy of living.”4 From the first excavations in the early 1900’s, scholars agree on this point. In 1987, Keller observes that, “Their main purpose was to bring an experience of love to the most important life passages: birth, sexuality and death/rebirth.”5 The more I uncover, the more Hesiod’s lament for the lost age makes sense and matches my own: “And I wish that I were not any part of the fifth generation of men, but had died before it came, or been born afterward. For here now is the age of iron. Never by daytime will there be an end to hard work and pain…” – Hesiod, Works and Days, lines 169-174 This (meta)journey of recovery is compounded by our continued failure to decipher Damatrian Crete’s script, referred to unimaginatively as Linear A. Happily, we are alive in a time when disciplines like archeology and mythology have come together to shed light on a formerly unknowable and lost way of life. How do we live so that we are not afraid to die? How did we lose that and how to do we get it back? The Festival of the Bull and The Eleusinian Mystery Rites of Demeter offer tantalizing insights here. We will examine each separately in Parts II and III of this series, considering them together in the context of the post-Bronze Age collapse in Part IV. (Essay 5) The Myriad Faces, Marvelous Powers, and Thealogy of Greek Goddesses by Mara Lynn Keller, Ph.D.

Part 5 discusses the extended family of Greek Goddesses.] Patriarchy versus Matriarchy—In Classical Athens The takeover of Greece and the Aegean Islands by the Mycenaeans and other Hellenic clans resulted in a syncretic religion, where many gods and goddesses were worshipped, mixing local religious customs with those of the patriarchal warrior clans. In both Crete and Greece, the polytheistic pantheon with their multiple divine personae were called upon to address the vast array of human needs and desires. The extended family of Greek Goddesses expanded to include not only Gaia, Themis, Phoebe, Diké (Justice), Nemesis, and Hekate; but also Hestia, Rhea, Demeter, Hera, Aphrodite, Hygeia (Health), Athena, Artemis, Irene (Peace), Iris (Rainbow), Thalassa (Sea), the Three Graces, the three Fates, the Three Furies, the Four Seasons, Nine Muses, the Dawn, the Night, the Goddesses of Democracy, of Persuasion, of Pity, Pandora, the Medusa sisters, and more. Each had sacred attributes, plants and animals, and sacred stories that spoke of their special powers. During the Classical Age (circa 500 to 323 BCE), people celebrated numerous religious festivals each month to honor the many Greek deities. According to legend, Kekrops, became the first king of the city-state of Athens, circa 1600 BCE. Kekrops called for a vote as to who should be the primary deity of the new city-state he would lead: Athena, Giver of the olive tree; or Poseidon, God of the Sea? The women voted for Athena, the men for Poseidon; and the women won by one vote.[1] Poseidon was enraged by his loss and flooded the Thrasian fields of Eleusis and Attika. To placate him, the men decided to punish the women by taking the vote away from them, the women could not be citizens of the new city-state, and children were to be called after their fathers instead of their mothers.[2] This represents the shift from Mother-Rite to Father-Right at Athens; the ascendency of the patriarchal family and ruling class; and the end of the earlier democratic practices where women had been the equals of men. From the union of the Earth Mother Goddess Rhea and Father of Time, Kronos, came Hestia, Demeter, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, and Zeus. The youngest of the offspring, Zeus, overthrew his father Kronos and became the chief of the Greek Gods and Goddesses. The Olympian Goddesses who succeeded the Titan Goddesses gradually were constricted to more limited roles shaped by the patriarchal beliefs of the Hellenic clans.[3] Hestia, first born of Rhea and Zeus, was the Goddess of the Hearth. She was worshipped in practically every household, as the central flame of family life. Her place among the Twelve Olympians was later given to Dionysus, God of Wine, Drama, and Ecstasy. The Olympian Twelve then included seven male gods and five female gods, reflecting the decline in female domestic powers. Demeter was a Great Mother Goddess, another Earth-Mother, Bringer of Seasons and Bestower of Fruits. She was “the honoured one … for mortals and immortals alike … the greatest blessing and source of joy.”[4]She was Mountain Mother; Great Goddess; Mother of Green Growth; Goddess of Warmth; Goddess of Childbirth; Bearer of the Laws of Civilization; the Unifier; Goddess of Good Counsel; Sender-up of Gifts; Light-bearer, Goddess of Healing; Cherisher of Children; Black Demeter (mournful Demeter in Phigalia of Arcadia, and of the black Earth in Eleusis); Furious Demeter; Savioress; and much more. She is Two-in-One, Mother and Daughter.[5] During the Hellenistic Age, Demeter’s Mysteries were seen as similar to the Mysteries of Isis of Egypt.[6] Under Hellenic rule, Demeter became restricted to Goddess of Agriculture and Goddess of Grain. Hera, the Great Mother Goddess of Argos, became the wife of her brother Zeus and the Goddess of Marriage. Their three hundred years of nuptial bliss were imaginatively extolled in Vergil’s Aeneid.[7] Hera later was remembered for her jealousies for Zeus’ many couplings with other Goddesses and human women. Aphrodite was the Goddess of Love, Beauty, the Arts, and Laughter. She was a goddess of erotic and sexual love, maternal love, and universal love. When wild animals followed Aphrodite on the mountains, “She filled their hearts with longing, so that they all went in twos into the shade of the valleys and made love with each other.”[8]The Pre-Socratic philosopher Empedocles, in the fifth century BCE, praised the pre-patriarchal, pre-warrior culture of the peoples of Cyprus, the birthplace of Aphrodite: No war-god Ares was worshipped, nor the battle-cry Nor was Zeus their king nor Kronos nor Poseidon but Cypris [Goddess of Love] was Queen.[9] Leto, daughter of the Titan Moon Goddess Phoebe and Titan god Koeus, became the mother, in partnership with Zeus, of the twin deities, Artemis and Apollo. She was known in Anatolia and Crete as Lato. Peoples of northeastern Crete named their town Lato for her as their presiding deity. Artemis, daughter of Zeus and Leto, was a maiden goddess. Because she was born first, before her twin Apollo, she served as midwife to her mother; thus Artemis was often called upon by women for help during childbirth. The herb named for her, artemisia (mugwort), eases childbirth. Artemis shunned the cities for the mountains, living in the wild with her female companions, including Britomartis of Crete. One of Artemis’ names was Mistress of Animals, as animals were under her care; another was Agrotera, Goddess of the Countryside. The bear was one of the animals closely associated with Artemis, and her young priestesses were named bear-priestesses. In the city-state of Ephesus on the western sea-coast of Anatolia, Artemis was worshipped as a Great Cosmic Mother, called Artemis Polymastos, the Many-Breasted Artemis, Mistress of Nature, Plants, and Animals; votaries called upon her as Great, Magnificent, Queen, Commander, Guide, Advisor, Legislator, Spreader of Light, Savior, and Controller of Fate. Max Dashu Sure. I would just like to add that the critique raised here addressed issues much broader than the substance of the article, which made some good points. But once the choice of graphics flagged the issue of representation, people had much more to say about that old yet still very fresh wound which is constantly reopened by the cultural habit of whitening Egypt, or interpreting Africa through a eurocentric lens. It is not on any one person to carry the weight of that; we all have a responsibility to address the issues, but especially those of us of European heritage need to familiarize ourselves with how this plays out over and over. Just as men have a responsibility to speak up in support of women when patriarchal assumptions are on board. We all can learn something from each other, along all the various axes of domination, and overthrow them in coalition. Naa Ayele Kumari I have often considered where the roots of this psychology comes from. It is dualistic thinking that causes us to compare and contrast, then sum up judgement of good or bad and place a value on each. It extends into competition and justification for war. It also doesn’t escape me that often this came with certain civilizations who systematically destroyed others. It didn’t just happen with blacks in Africa… but blacks in Asia and the Indus Valley as well. With the Aryan invasions of India, came the eventual introduction to lighter divinities and more emphasis on male divinities. Southern Indians, Sri Lankans are very dark… even more so than many African Blacks. The caste systems implemented by the Aryan invaders did the same thing to them casting them as “untouchables”. With that came the marginalization of their black female divinities such as Kali. Kali actually has 10-16 forms… from compassionate mother, the fountain of wisdom, to she of great beauty but she is minimized as just destructive and terrifying… especially as Brhaman, Vishnuu, and Shiva grow in popularity. One of Kali’s statues has her black self standing on top of Shiva because she conquered him. Later there is a discussion in on of the Hindu text explaining Kali (as Parvati) after being subdued by Shiva she becomes lighter. Further they have stories about him rejecting her and calling her blackie which made her do austerities to rid herself of her black skin. Naa Ayele Kumari It should not be overlooked that in the Story of Alice in Wonderland… a story intended to keep Goddess elements for future generations, has the Elder sister ( the Queen of Hearts) portrayed as man, ego, and power driven who cuts off heads and has a fierce dragon…a clear reference to Kali. Demons are portrayed as black not only in Europe, which we know well, but also in China and in a lot of Buddhist iconography. In modern India, the sweet goddesses are shown as pink, the wrathful as black; and Krishna (name means “dark”) is turned powder blue. (Another of his titles, s’yam, also meaning dark, is the word translated as “green” in Green Tara.) While I’m in the midst of appropriating all of the wonderful beliefs I find here, I also have found a strand in my own tradition that helps me understand why all the Divine Feminine stuff makes so much sense to me. I’ve been trying to determine when the patriarchal world view took over. According to this history, mysticism began to emerge in about 800 to 500 BCE. Could it be that mysticism kept alive the ancient understanding of the cosmos? This is just speculation, but in it I’m answering my own questions. None of us have the right or the place to “sacrifice those we care about” for anything. She was not “above them”. And she had abundant means to do far more for them, to cure and comfort them. If indeed she imagined she had some lofty motivation as you so fervently believe, to use the power she had to withhold medical care from the poverty stricken sick and dying in some misguided and ultimately cruel attempt to bring the world’s attention to their suffering and produce compassion within those who would not otherwise feel it is the most monstrous miscarriage of any expression of what you might refer to as “love” that I have heard of outside of Jim Jones killing all of his followers in Ghana. That’s not Love. That’s not Compassion. That is Manipulation, and manipulation is ego-based. Anne Wilkerson Allen: Yes. (Essay) The Emergence celebrated at Spring Equinox by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

The Spring Equinox Moment occurs September 21-23 Southern Hemisphere, March 21-23 Northern Hemisphere. The full story of Spring Equinox is expressed in the full flower connected to the seed fresh from the earth; that is, it is a story of emergence from the dark, from a journey, perhaps long, perhaps short, through challenging places. The joy of the blossoming is rooted in the journey through the dark, and an acknowledgement of the dark’s fertile gift, as well as of great achievement in having made it, of having returned. Both Equinoxes, Spring and Autumn, celebrate this sacred balance of grief and joy, light and dark, and they are both celebrations of the mystery of the seed. The seed is essentially the deep Creativity within – that manifests in the Spring as flower, or green emerged One. the full story: the root and the flower As the new young light continues to grow at this time of Spring, it comes into balance with the dark at Spring Equinox, or ‘Eostar’ as it may be named; about to tip further into light when light will dominate the day. The trend at this Equinox is toward increasing hours of light: and thus it is about the power of being – life is stepping into it. Earth in this region is tilting further toward the Sun. Traditionally it may be storied as the joyful celebration of a Lost Beloved One, who may be represented by the Persephone story: She is a shamanic figure who is known for Her journey to the Underworld, and who at this time of Spring Equinox returns. Her Mother Demeter who has waited and longed for Her in deep grief, rejoices and so do all: warmth and growth return to the land. Persephone, the Beloved Daughter, the Seed, has navigated the darkness successfully, has enriched it with Her presence and also gained its riches. Eostar/Spring Equinox is the magic of the unexpected, yet long awaited, green emergence from under the ground, and then the flower: this emergence is especially profound as it is from a seed that has lain dormant for months or longer – much like the magic of desert blooms after long periods of drought. The name of “Eostar” comes from the Saxon Goddess Eostre/Ostara, the northern form of the Sumerian Astarte[i]. The Christian festival in the Spring, was named “Easter” as of the Middle Ages, appropriating Goddess/Earth tradition. The date of Easter, which is set for Northern Hemispheric seasons, is still based on the lunar/menstrual calendar; that is, the 1st Sunday after the first full Moon after Spring Equinox. In Australia where I am, “Easter” is celebrated in Autumn (!) by mainstream culture, so we have the spectacle of fluffy chickens, chocolate eggs and rabbits in the shops at that time. There are other names for “Eostar” in other places …the Welsh name for the Spring Equinox celebration is Eilir, meaning ‘regeneration’ or ‘spring’ – or ‘earth’[ii]. In my own PaGaian tradition, the Spring Equinox celebration is based on the Demeter and Persephone story, the version that is understand as pre-patriarchal, from Old Europe. In the oldest stories, Persephone has agency in Her descent: She descends to the underworld voluntarily as a courageous seeker of wisdom, and a compassionate receiver of the dead. She represents, and IS, the Seed of Life that never fades away. Spring Equinox is a celebration of Her return, Life’s continual return, and thus also our personal and collective emergences/returns.We may contemplate the collective emergence/returns especially in our times. I describe Persephone as a “hera”, which of old was a term for any courageous One. “Hera” was a pre-Hellenic name for the Goddess in general[iii]. “Hera” was the indigenous Queen Goddess of pre-Olympic Greece, before She was married off to Zeus. “Hero” was a term for the brave male Heracles who carried out tasks for his Goddess Hera: “The derivative form ‘heroine’ is therefore completely unnecessary”[iv]. “Hera” may be used as a term for any courageous individual: and participants in PaGaian Spring Equinox ceremony have named themselves this way. The pre-“Olympic” games of Greece were Hera’s games, held at Her Heraion/temple[v]. The winners were “heras” – gaining the status of being like Her[vi]. At the time of Spring Equinox, we may celebrate the Persephone, the Hera, the Courageous One, who steps with new wisdom, into power of being: the organic power that all beings must have, Gaian power, the power of the Cosmos. This Seasonal ceremony may be a rejoicing in how we have made it through great challenges and loss, faced our fears and our demise (in its various forms), had ‘close shaves’ – perhaps physically as well as psychicly and emotionally. It is a time to welcome back that which was lost, and step into the strength of being. Spring Equinox/Eostar is the time for enjoying the fruits of the descent, of the journey taken into the darkness: return is now certain, not tentative as it was in the Early Spring/Imbolc. Demeter, the Mother, receives the Persephones, Lost Beloved Ones, joyously. This may be understood as an individual experience, but also as a collective experience – as we emerge into a new Era as a species. Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme speak of the ending of the sixty-five million year geological Era – the Cenozoic Era – in our times, and our possible emergence into an Ecozoic Era. They describe the Ecozoic Era as a time when “the curvature of the universe, the curvature of the earth, and the curvature of the human are once more in their proper relation”[vii]. Joanna Macy speaks of the “Great Turning” of our times[viii]. Collectively we have been away from the Mother for some time and there is a lot of pain. At this time we may contemplate not only our own individual lost wanderings, but also that of the human species. We are part of a much bigger Return that is happening. (Prose) Halcyon for the Season by Deanne Quarrie

A bird for this season is the Kingfisher, also known as the Halcyon. The Kingfisher is associated in Greek myth with the Winter Solstice. There were fourteen “halcyon days” in every year, seven of which fell before the winter solstice, seven after; peaceful days when the sea was smooth as a pond and the hen-halcyon built a floating nest and hatched out her young. She also had another habit, that of carrying her dead mate on her back over the sea and mourning him with a plaintive cry. Pliny reported that the halcyon was rarely seen and then only at the winter and summer solstices and at the setting of the Pleiades. She was therefore, a manifestation of the Moon-Goddess who was worshiped at the two solstices as the Goddess of Life in Death and Death in Life and, when the Pleiades set, she sent the sacred king his summons for death. Kingfishers are typically stocky, short-legged birds with large heads and large, heron-like beaks. They feed primarily on fish, hovering over the water or watching intently from perches and they plunge headlong into the water to catch their prey. Their name, Alcedinidae, stems from classical Greek mythology. Alcyone, Daughter of the Wind, was so distraught when her husband perished in a shipwreck that she threw herself into the sea. Both were then transformed into kingfishers and roamed the waves together. When they nested on the open sea, the winds remained calm and the weather balmy. Still another Alcyone, Queen of Sailing, was the mystical leader of the seven Pleiades. The heliacal rising of the Pleiades in May marked the beginning of the navigational year and their setting marked the end. Alcyone, as Sea Goddess protected sailors from rocks and rough weather. The bird, halcyon continued for centuries to be credited with the magical power of allaying storms. Shakespeare refers to this legend in this passage from Hamlet: Some say that ever ‘gainst that season comes Wherein our Saviour’s birth is celebrated, The bird of dawning singeth all night long; And then, they say, no spirit can walk abroad; The nights are wholesome; then no planets strike, No fairy takes, nor witch hath power to charm, So hallow’d and so gracious is the time. Hamlet, I, i 157 When I was a young mother, and my children were little, we lived in a house that had a creek in the back yard. There were small trees along the far bank of this creek and every day, a kingfisher would sit in the branches overlooking the creek. Sometimes he sat there very quietly for a very long time. Suddenly he would dive from his perch straight into the creek. Every time he did he came out and up into the air with a fish. It gave me great pleasure to watch him from my kitchen window. I love birds. I love learning about their habits because it teaches me ways of being that are closer to nature. I love drawing birds as well. When I was a young and more able, I was an avid bird watcher, out with my friends hoping for a sight never seen before. I love the story of the kingfisher and her connection to the Halcyon Days of the Winter Solstice. It is for most of us the busiest time of year. Whether it is for the Solstice or Christmas (often both) we are in a frenzy to get things done, making sure everything is just right and perfect. I celebrate the Winter Solstice. As a priestess, my days right now are very busy creating ritual. It is at the Solstice that many passage rites are happening with the women I work with. And of course, I celebrate with my family with our magical Yule Log each year. But I try to honor those seven days before and the seven days after by trying to have the frantic moments before the Halcyon Days begin and then even when busy, hold the peace and calm of that beautiful smooth sea in my mind. Peace and love and joy surrounding the Winter Solstice make it perfect. May the Peace of a Halcyon Sea be yours in this Solstice Season. Do hold the image of that little kingfisher in mind! Samhain: Stepping Wisely through the Open Door by Carolyn Lee Boyd

Day of the Dead altar, via Wikimedia Commons According to Celtic tradition, on Samhain (October 31 for those in the north and April 30 for those in the south) the doors between the human and spirit worlds open. Faeries, demons, and spirits of the dead pour out of the Otherworld to walk the Earth. In the past, some would try to hurry ghosts past their houses or ward off evil spirits by setting jack o’lanterns in their windows. They avoided going outside, especially past cemeteries, lest they be snatched away to the Otherworld. In ancient times, some offered sacrifices to propitiate deities. However, others have invited in the souls of friends and family who have passed away. In Brittany, according to W.Y. Evans-Wentz’s Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries, people would provide “a feast and entertainment for them of curded-milk, hot pancakes, and cider, served on the family table covered with a fresh white tablecloth, and to supply music” which “the dead come to enjoy with their friends” (p. 218). Other cultures also have such welcoming traditions. In Korea, as so beautifully described by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang in her posts about her family’s mourning for her father (Part I and Part II), in Mexico on the Day of the Dead, and elsewhere, food and flowers are brought to cemeteries to honor those no longer in the realm of the living. Many of us live in a society where death is pushed out of sight and Samhain’s sacred traditions have devolved into Halloween, a commercialized children’s holiday. Still, it seems to me that the pandemic, climate catastrophes, and war have made death much more present in our everyday thoughts over the past couple of years than before, so perhaps this year’s Samhain offers us the opportunity to re-examine Celtic and other practices of the past and present to see what insights and meaning they may have for us. Whether you believe that the Otherworld can wreak havoc on us at Samhain or not, the realm where spirits dwell clearly has power. Its allure can take us away from focusing on mundane, daily challenges or, more positively, open our eyes to the value of relating to forces that can give richness and meaning to our lives. At the same time, we must remember that each domain has its own power. We can use our physical bodies in beneficial ways that those in the Otherworld cannot. We must respect the power of the Otherworld as well as our own. Some kinds of healing are only possible when we welcome those from the Otherworld into our lives in a healthy way, whether through holiday visits or every day through remembrance, meditation, prayer, or other means. I’m of an age when many of my beloveds are in the Otherworld and so I am beginning to find that the idea of being able to sit with someone I have lost is cause not for fear, but rather joy and comfort. Perhaps those who have longstanding wounds from the past can heal by remembering those we have lost at Samhain and forgiving them or ourselves or realizing that we are no longer bound to those who have hurt us and are now gone. Samhain can also reassure us of the truth of our intuitive sense that our beloveds who we grieve are with us still, in some way, on this night and throughout the year. When we participate in the celebration of Samhain’s opening of doors to the Otherworld, if only for a day, we are honoring our own participation into the great cycle of life, death, and rebirth. We are expanding our vision of ourselves to be more than our bodies on the Earth and experiencing ourselves as connected to many realms, seen and unseen, spirit and human. We are accepting that at some time we will also become ancestors, with all the responsibility that entails and the fulfillment of taking our place in the complex matrix of being that is our universe. When we interact with the souls of those we have lost in ways that are healthy for us, however we may choose and believe that happens, we can also better celebrate the realm of the living. Just as we may listen in various ways for positive messages from those whom we have lost, we can ensure that we are expressing important guidance to those who will come after us by who we are and how we live our lives. We can express that life is worth living, even with all its traumas, and that we respect both the boundaries and the doors between the worlds so that we may continue living fully in our physical bodies on our beautiful, awe-inspiring Earth. I hope my message to my descendants will be: Love your lives. Build on what we have done and do better. Leave behind what we left you that no longer serves. If you feel alone, remember that you have thousands of generations of mothers sending you unconditional love and also generations of women coming after you eager to pick up where you left off. According to Mary Condren in The Serpent and the Goddess, in the most ancient times, “Samhain had been primarily a harvest feast celebrating the successful growth and gathering of the fruits of the past year” (p. 36). While we in the north are coming into the season of death, those in the south are experiencing Beltane, the first moments of spring when the doors between the worlds are also open. The eternal cycle of life, death, and regeneration turns again. Whether you are celebrating Samhain or Beltane, know that this holy time offers us all a chance to enter into the task of maintaining harmony with those we have loved before and for bringing balance between life and death, winter and summer, and the realm of the living and …
(Book Excerpt) Imbolc/Early Spring within the Creative Cosmos by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an excerpt from Chapter 6 of the author’s new book A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony. Traditionally the dates for Imbolc/Early Spring are: Southern Hemisphere – August 1st/2nd Northern Hemisphere – February 1st/2nd though the actual astronomical date varies. It is the meridian point or cross-quarter day between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, thus actually a little later in early August for S.H., and early February for N.H., respectively. Some Imbolc Motifs In this cosmology Imbolc/Early Spring is the quintessential celebration of She Who is the Urge to Be. This aspect of the Creative Triplicity is associated with the differentiation quality of Cosmogenesis,[i] and with the Virgin/Young One aspect of the Triple Goddess, who is ever-new, unique, and singular in Her beauty – as each being is. This Seasonal Moment celebrates an identification with the Virgin/Young One – the rest of the light part of the cycle celebrates Her processes. At this Moment She is the Promise of Life, a spiritual warrior, determined to Be. Her purity is Her singularity of purpose. Her inviolability is Her determination to be … nothing to do with unbroken hymens of the dualistic and patriarchal mind. The Virgin quality is the essential “yes” to Being – not the “no” She was turned into. In the poietic process of the Seasonal Moments of Samhain/Deep Autumn, Winter Solstice and Imbolc/Early Spring, one may get a sense of these three in a movement towards manifest form – syntropy: from the autopoietic fertile sentient space of Samhain, through the gateway and communion of Winter Solstice to differentiated being, constant novelty, infinite particularity of Imbolc/Early Spring. The three are a kaleidoscope, seamlessly connected. The ceremonial breath meditations for all three of these Seasonal Moments focus attention on the Space between the breaths – each with slightly different emphasis: it is from this manifesting Space that form/manifestation arises. If one may observe Sun’s position on the horizon as She rises, the connection of the three can be noted there also: that is, Sun at Samhain/Deep Autumn and Imbolc/Early Spring rises at the same position, halfway between Winter Solstice and Equinox, but the movement is just different in direction.[ii] And these three Seasonal Moments are not clearly distinguishable – they are “fuzzy,”[iii] not simply linear and all three are in each other … this is something recognised of Old, thus the Nine Muses, or the numinosity of any multiple of three. Some Imbolc/early Spring Story This is the Season of the new waxing light. Earth’s tilt has begun taking us in this region back towards the Sun. Traditionally this Seasonal Point has been a time of nurturing the new life that is beginning to show itself – around us in flora and fauna, and within. It is a time of committing one’s self to the new life and to inspiration – in the garden, in the soul, and in the Cosmos. We may celebrate the new young Cosmos – that time in our Cosmic story when She was only a billion years old and galaxies were forming, as well as the new that is ever coming forth. This first Seasonal transition of the light part of the cycle has been named “Imbolc” – Imbolc is thought to mean “ewe’s milk” from the word “Oimelc,” as it is the time when lambs were/are born, and milk was in plentiful supply. It is also known as “the Feast of Brigid,” Brigid being the Great Goddess of the Celtic (and likely pre-Celtic) peoples, who in Christian times was made into a saint. The Great Goddess Brigid is classically associated with early Spring since the earliest of times, but her symbology has evolved with the changing eras – sea, grain, cow. In our times we could associate Her also with the Milky Way, our own galaxy that nurtures our life – Brigid’s jurisdiction has been extended. Some sources say that Imbolc means “in the belly of the Mother.” In either case of its meaning, this celebration is in direct relation to, and an extension of, the Winter Solstice – when the Birth of all is celebrated. Imbolc may be a dwelling upon the “originating power,” and that it is in us: a celebration of each being’s particular participation in this power that permeates the Universe, and is present in the condition of every moment.[iv] This Seasonal Moment focuses on the Urge to Be, the One/Energy deeply resolute about Being. She is wilful in that way – and Self-centred. In the ancient Celtic tradition Great Goddess Brigid has been identified with the role of tending the Flame of Being, and with the Flame itself. Brigid has been described as: “… Great Moon Mother, patroness (sic … why not “matron”) of poetry and of all ‘making’ and of the arts of healing.”[v] Brigid’s name means “the Great or Sublime One,” from the root brig, “power, strength, vigor, force, efficiency, substance, essence, and meaning.”[vi] She is poet, physician/healer, smith-artisan: qualities that resonate with the virgin-mother-crone but are not chronologically or biologically bound – thus are clearly ever present Creative Dynamic. Brigid’s priestesses in Kildare tended a flame, which was extinguished by Papal edict in 1100 C.E., and was re-lit in 1998 C.E.. In the Christian era, these Early Spring/Imbolc celebrations of the Virgin quality, the New Young One – became “Candlemas,” a time for purifying the “polluted” mother – forty days after Solstice birthing. Cast in 771, the bell reenacts the music of whales to remind people of the Female Beginning, the self-creative power innate all beings. Today is Day 2 of the New Year in the reconstructed Magoist Calendar characterized by 13 months per year and 28 days per month. We are heading toward the Solstice that falls on Dec. 21/22 (Day 5 of the first month in the Magoist Calendar), which happens to be the day of the first full moon of Year 2. The Magoma Era is based on the onset of the nine-state confederacy of Danguk (State of Dan, the Birth Tree) traditinally dated 3898 BCE-2333 BCE. We just passed Year 1 or 5915 Magoma Era (the Gregorian 2018). For Year 1, we had the New Year Day on December 18 of 2017, the first new moon day before the December Solstice. That makes December 18 of 2017 our lunation 1, the first lunar year that the reconstructed Magoist Calendar determines its first day of the Year 1! Although relatively short in history, the Mago Work began to celebrate the Nine Day Mago Celebration on the day of December Solstice annually since 2015. With the reconstructed Magoist Calendar, we placed it in its due timeframe, the Ninth Month and the Ninth Day, which fell on August 8, 2018 (US PST) and celebrated it for the first time according to the Magoist Calendar. Apparently, this had to be a mid-Summer event. This left us with another seasonal event, the New Year/Solstice Celebration. A few from around the globe (Germany, Korea, Italy and the US) participated in it or hosted their own local vigils. The Korean temple bell is the key symbol for the Magoist Calendar as well as the Magoist Cosmogony. It is not a coincidence that it is struck on the midnight of the New Year’s Eve. It is Korean tradition that even modern Koreans gather at the bell tower in Seoul to hear the sound of the bell at midnight. And these bells are gigantic weighing 19 tons in the case of the Emile Bell. That this convention has an ancient Magoist root remains esoteric. For not only they strike the bell 28 times in the evening indicating the 28 lunar stations that the Moon stops by in the sky throughout the year (please read below what the 28 day lunar journey means and how it is represented by women). But also the Korean temple bell is no mere acoustic device to play the beautiful sound only. Nonetheless, she remains barely known to the world. Her equals, Xiwangmu (the Supreme Goddess of Daoism) and Amaterasu (the Sun Goddess of the Japanese imperial family), are said to comprise the pantheon of East Asian cosmic goddesses. Considering that these goddesses are often aligned with the ancient culture of China or Japan, one notices that the pantheon of East Asian Great Goddesses thus omits both Mago and “Korean culture.”

Making the Gynocentric Case: Mago, the Great Goddess of East Asia, and her Tradition Magoism[i] This study documents and interprets a substantial body of primary sources concerning Mago [麻姑, also known as Magu or Mako] from Korea, China, and Japan. Much of this material has never been brought to light as a whole. In working with these various and sundry data including folklore, paintings, arts, literature, poetry, toponyms, rituals, historical and religious records, and apocryphal texts, I encountered an organic structure that relates these seemingly unrelated materials and named it Magoism. Magoism refers to an anciently originated gynocentric cultural and historical context of East Asia, which venerates Mago as supreme divine. Although “Magoism” is my coinage, its concept is not new. Magoism is referred to as the Way of Mago, the Origin of Mago, the Event of Mago, Reign of Mago, Heavenly Principle, or simply Mago in historical sources. In the West, its partial manifestation is known as the cult of Magu within the context of Daoism. One of the earliest verified records, the Biography of Magu (Magu zhuan) written by Ge Hong (284-364) dates back to proto-Daoist times.[ii] Nonetheless, “Mago” remains largely forgotten and misrepresented to the world especially in modern times. More incisively, her sublime divinity is made invisible despite strong evidence. No scholarship in the West has treated Mago as a topic in her own right. Mago’s multiple identities ranging from the cosmogonist to a grandmother, from the progenitress to the Daoist goddess, from the sovereign to a shaman/priestess in Korea, China, and Japan remain unregistered in modern scholarship. When mentioned, her transnational manifestation is not recognized cogently. She is often lumped together with other parochial goddesses from China. Other times, she is fetishized as a Daoist goddess of immortality. She is also known, among other representations, as the giant grandmother (goddess) who shaped the natural landscape in the beginning of time among Koreans. In any case, Mago is not deemed on a par or in relation with Xiwangmu (the Queen Mother of the West in Chinese Daoism) and Amaterasu, (the Sun Goddess of the Japanese imperial family), both of who represent the East Asian pantheon of supreme goddesses to the West. I hold that the paramount significance of Magoism lies in the fact that it redefines the female principle and proffers a gynocentric utopian vision to the modern audience. Its utopian cosmology is no free-floating abstract idea but imbedded in the mytho-historical-cultural reality of East Asia. I suggest Magoism as the original vision of East Asian thought. Put differently, Magoism is an East Asian gynocentric testimony to the forgotten utopian reality. In the sense that Magoism presents an East Asian gynocentric symbolic system, this study is distinguished from Western and androcentric discourse. In other words, its gynocentric universalism should not be subsumed under the discourse of Western or patriarchal universalism. Magoism prompts an alternative paradigm of ancient gynocentrism that redefine major notions of the divine, human, and nature in continuum. Mago, the great goddess, is the unifying and at the same time individualizing force in this system. Magoism enables a macrocosmic view in which all individualized parts are organically co-related and co-operating. As a religious system, it is at once monotheistic and polytheistic. That is, Mago is the great goddess in her multiple manifestations. Underlying the patriarchal edifices, the Magoist principle is the Source from which the latter is derived.
