Bona Dea artwork by Sketchepedia on Freepik Bona Dea ‘Good Goddess’ was a Goddess of Ancient Rome. She presides over nature, the earth, and fertility, but also virginity and chastity. In Roman times purity and vitality were highly regarded attributes and therefore Bona Dea was considered to be a protector of Rome and an important Goddess. (1) She was so popular that evidence of Her worship has been found throughout the Mediterranean and North Africa where there was once Roman rule. (2) According to belief, She is an ancient Goddess who predates Rome and may have come from the Greek Goddess, Diama or Artemis, or possibly the Italian Goddess, Ops. There is little academic evidence of this Goddess, due to the secrecy that shrouded Her rites, and the fact that men were excluded from them. (3) In Her time, men were the only historians, and therefore Bona Dea was rarely written about. There are, however, artefacts and sacred places known to have been related to Her. (4) Perhaps the most fascinating thing about this Goddess was Her cult following and the fact that She does have links to scandals and the breaking of rules, which would never otherwise be broken in Ancient Rome. Men in patriarchal Roman Society, feared Bona Dea so much, that they allowed women to worship Her in private at festivals where Vestal Virgins (whose services were usually reserved for men), conducted the ceremonies. “Since the earliest literary documents, Bona Dea was presented as a prestigiously ancient State goddess, whose cult was the only one officially reserved for women. Extraordinarily, women were allowed to perform a sacrifice on the night between December 3 and 4 on behalf, and for the benefit, of the whole populace, i.e. pro populo and pro salute populi Romani1 (sacrifice was rigorously reserved for men). The ritual took place in the house of the magistrate cum imperio, where the festive celebration included music, dances, and wine (otherwise prohibited to women). Yet, the magistrate did not participate: men were strictly and scrupulously excluded from this religious festival, and the cult was led by his wife, the Vestal virgins and, possibly, female slaves. The mythographic rationale behind this gender separation was based on unlawful consumption of wine (a crime for women), an attempted rape, and a murder by the mythic Latin king Faunus, Bona Dea’s husband (or brother/father, according to other variants). Very little else is known about the cult itself, except that another festival was performed in the Aventine temple in May.” – Ambasciano, L, The Fate of a Healing Goddess: Ocular Pathologies, the Antonine Plague, and the Ancient Roman Cult of Bona Dea, (2016) (5) As you can imagine, men were curious about what went on during these festivities and the famous scandal came about when, in December 62 BC Clodius Pulcher dressed as a woman and snuck into the festival. That year it was Pompeia overseeing the rites as Julius Ceasar was the senior senator. Clodius was apprehended but not caught and this caused a scandal, speculation, and trials that lasted years. Julius Caesar divorced his wife saying, “Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion.” However, as is demonstrated throughout the stories of Bona Dea, once again, normal rules were broken to become more favourable to women, when, Caesar gave his wife a dowry and found her a new husband. (6) (7) Bona Dea is said to have been the reincarnation of the nature Goddess, Fauna, daughter of Faun. The myths vary, but one is that Fauna drank wine despite knowing that women were forbidden from drinking it. Her father, Faun, found her drunk and attempted to rape her, but she fought him off. He then beat her to death with a branch of myrtle to teacher her a lesson. Once dead, Faun elevated her to Goddess status, and She became known as Bona Dea. This is a nod to women’s sovereignty, although her fate ended in death. There are some versions of the myth that say Faun successfully raped Fauna, but I prefer the version where he doesn’t. (8) (9) Due to Her power to provide miracles to the people of Rome, She had a temple at Aventine Hill, where snakes dwelled and medicines were grown. The temple was for women only and rumour has it that the women made their own rules within this sacred space. (10) As well as that, at Her festivals which took place on 1st May for the public at the temple, and on 3rd December at the Pontifex Maximus house, at night, all men and male objects were removed to please the Goddess. This included animals and art. (11) Myrtle wasn’t allowed as this could anger the Goddess. Wine was drunk but relabelled as ‘Milk’ and was drunk from jugs renamed ‘Honey Pots’, to hide the fact that wine was being drunk. Since women were forbidden from drinking wine, this should have been punishable, but because it was in favour of Bona Dea, it was permitted. (12) My thoughts on this mysterious Goddess are that She was a Goddess of Feminism. She was a sign of hope for women and without realising it, her worshippers back then made progress for the future of all women. Without this Goddess, and the breaking of patriarchal rules, on Her behalf, how much deeper could Patriarchy have been embedded into everyday society? Dad in 2020 My Father and His Return to WE/HERE/NOW My loving father passed on Oct. 10, 2020 in South Korea. It feels like a big portion of my core is torn away. In memories and sorrows, I thank him for his love for me, comfort him for the pains and sufferings his life caused, and celebrate the gift of himself to the world. I unite with him in spirit, as he has embarked his eternal journey of being beyond the visible world. I send him off to WE/HERE/NOW in a traditional Magoist Korean way, which I have encountered through my research. He seems gone from the physical world but is fully HERE/NOW with All in WE, the Mother World!My task is to pave his way as much as possible. So I begin with a little about the life he had in this fragile visible world: Dad in Youth Hwang Jong-Hwan (黃鍾煥 July 31 or July 2 on Lunar, 1935-October 10, 2020) was a gifted man, a proud father, and a devoted husband. His name Jong-Hwan, which means the Splendid Bell, was given by his father according to the naming custom of the Hwang clan. His childhood name was Yong-Hwan (the Splendid Dragon). Born and grew up under the Japanese colonial rule, survived the Korean War, and endured the harsh reality of modern Korea’s economic re-building in the 1960s and 1970s. He was the first of four siblings (three sons and one daughter). He was born as the promising son of a self-made businessman (my grandfather) who owned a bike store (sales and repairs) in a historical township, Seonsan in North Gyeongsang Province. However, his happy childhood could not last long. His father’s sudden death (my father was seven-year old) left his wife and children unprotected and in poverty. As his mother (my grandmother) returned to her in-law’s village (I was born there too) with her children and lived as a farmer in the household of her mother-in-law, he grew up as the young widow’s oldest son. Wasn’t able to pursue his educational dream beyond primary school, which hit him hard throughout his life. He kept a drawing journal with a beautiful color drawing (the moon, the village surrounding, and the hind view of a lady with a long braided hair dangling on her back dressed in Korean traditional clothes depicted in a pastel tone, as I recall; its serenity and beauty mesmerized me as a child) and poetic verses during his youth years and carried it with him until his 30s, a book which his children were able to see. In fact, that may have been my first book to read. He was an artist and a poet, I gather now. Married a woman (my mother) from a well-off family in the same village. My maternal great-grandfather had chosen him for his granddaughter (my mother). He was 6 years older than her. They had three children (a daughter and two sons). Together with his wife and with the support of his in-laws family, he began as a vendor in Seoul to support his family but was not successful at all. That made my mother stronger. He was supportive of his wife and later opened a grocery store, owned a family tailor shop making himself a tailor, and conducted clothing business on and off. He was gifted in repairing household appliances and enjoyed providing his family with external wound care. He even enjoyed cooking for the family especially during family trips in nature. He designed and built a two-story family home in his 50s. He lived frugally and diligently so that they (my parents) could put their three children through prestigious private universities. Two of them achieved a doctoral degree and beyond. He was very proud of his children and enjoyed their successes on many levels. Loved traveling nationwide and listening to songs. Liked many things among which are gardening, biking, and outdoor-exploring. He held the city’s chess championship and continued to enjoy watching and playing chess matches till his last year. He was diagnosed with kidney failure in his 60s and under dialysis for 16 years. He endured it with an amazing spirit and tenacity for which we, his family, admired and respected him. He had undergone a series of near death crises over the years. Each time he returned with his mind intact and with his body functional. I called him the phoenix. We in our family knew that the farewell was approaching but did not know how soon. He left the visible world at 4:52 AM on Saturday October 10. On the same day, his body was moved to another hospital for the funeral. My mother had hoped to bury him so my brothers honored her wish. Survived by his spouse, three children, and three grandchildren as well as his brothers and their in-laws. We who are his family, relatives, and have known him are grateful for his life of caring, enduring, and giving. (Essay) Private Religion in Pompeii: An examination of two lararia from Pompeii by Francesca Tronetti, Ph.D.

Two Lararia (household shrines) in the House of the Faun, Pompeii Private worship in the home is perhaps the oldest form of ritual worship practiced by people who had settled into towns and villages. Before there were temples, churches, and citied devoted to religion, there were private altars and personal offerings to the deities. The use of private home altars continues today and there is not much of a change between the altars of the past and the altars used by people today. Individuals of all faiths may set up an altar or sacred space in their home where they place icons, images, candles, or offerings. I will examine two lararia, a household shrine, uncovered during excavations at Pompeii. One from a shop[1] and the other from the Casa dei Vetti, a large two-story house. My goal is to examine any links between how the household gods were worshipped and the status or occupation of the people who worshipped them in order to answer the question of whether the status of the person changes the location of the lararium was and what images adorned it. The Roman city of Pompeii, founded in 80 BCE and destroyed in 79 CE, offers archaeologists and researchers a rare snapshot of ancient Roman life. Buried and preserved by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius Pompeii, and other areas such as Herculaneum and several villas retains images and artifacts of ancient Roman civilization that are not found in such entirety anywhere else in the Roman world. In Imperial, Rome religion could be practiced in several different spheres. There was the public sphere of state-sponsored festivals and temples in which sacrifices were made to the gods of the Roman pantheon. The other was the cultic or group sphere in which one or a pair of gods was worshipped at specific times during the year[2] in rituals that were not open to public viewing. The cults of Rome were deeply personal spiritual paths, and a person had to be initiated into the cult to attend and participate in the rituals. Lastly there was the private worship of gods in the home, in rites, “performed on behalf of individual persons, households, and clans” and not associated with public worship[3]. Function and Decoration of a Lararium The most sacred, the most hallowed place on earth is the home of each and every citizen. There are his sacred hearth and his household gods, there the very centre of his worship, religion, and domestic ritual[4]. According to John Bodel, much of Roman domestic or household religion was centered around the worship performed by the individual. The lararium of a house was usually a wall-niche. This wall-niche was decorated with painted representations of the household gods, which flanked a figure of the genius[5] in the act of offering sacrifice[6]. In these wall-niches, statuettes of personal deities would sometimes be placed, and each would have had a personal meaning to the occupants of the household. In Pompeii many such statuettes were found with the remains of those attempting to flee the city, while some remained in place in the lararium[7]. One group of household gods were the Lares, the gods of household supplies. The Lares were primarily worshipped by the slaves and the servants of the household[8] and could be found in various places within the house. In the towns surrounding the Bay of Naples they were most often found in kitchens, but also in atria, peristyles, and gardens[9]. Bodel argues that painting or setting up a pair of Lares may have meant nothing more than that the individual believed in the sanctity of house and home. His reasoning is that “since ‘household’ shrines are found in many work establishments as well as in houses at both Pompeii and Ostia[10],” the Lares did not have a deeply religious meaning. For Bodel, the Lares were a way to show clients and visitors that the owner of the establishment had a sense of family and home. Another set of gods were the Penates. These were the personal gods inherited by the family; they could be expressed through tokens and images collected by individuals. These gods were believed to bring wealth and provisions into the house[11]. The Penates were “fluid and open[12],” and could be changed and evolve with the household. In this way, they were unlike the more static Lares or even the genius, which could be considered a revered ancestral figure. In the lararia of Pompeii, serpents are perhaps the most readily identified image. In some Pompeian lararia, the image of the snake is the only one depicted[13]. Images of snakes are not limited to the lararium. In Pompeii, they are found on public shrines, street crossings, and the crossroads. The pictures on the roads are identical in every respect to those found on the household shrines. The image of the serpent can be found alone or in a pair. The snakes painted on the shrines were often depicted as receiving offerings. It can be concluded from the work of archaeologists and researchers that several of the symbols and images depicted on the lararium were standard images of protection such as the Lares, serpents, and genii, masculine spirits. This allows us to narrow our study of lararia to the pictures that are not found to be shared or common among them. In the more elegant homes of Pompeii, two lararia are often found. One would be incorporated into the architecture as a wall-niche. This lararium would be set up in a public room, such as the atrium or peristyle garden. The lararium would be richly decorated and painted. Sometimes they were flanked by columns or painted garlands. Another lararium would be in the services quarters. This lararium would be humbler, painted on the wall, and would not contain an image of the Penates, only the Lares. Even in smaller Pompeian houses without separate servant’s quarters, many times, there is found a second lararium or independent household …

In January 2014 I visited Sardinia because I had been reading about the extraordinary archaeological richness of the island. There are Paleolithic, Megalithic and Bronze Age treasures – of the last the most spectacular being the nuraghe, stone towers built without mortar – and on Sardinia I also stumbled across those marvellous baetyls, small breasted sacred stones. I am fascinated by our stone and rock heritage all around the world and Sardinia is one of those places that has seen many cultures pass through from prehistory right up to the present. When you have performed a text, it’s not quite the same when simply read. My body recalls the words in the shapes I have made with my body. I have written a lot of texts for performance, mostly circus. This was my first and initially I found it difficult to speak and do aerials simultaneously. I was lucky that singer songwriter, Alix Dobkin was staying with us at the time and she gave me some notes which helped me gather my voice with more strength. It turned out to be a matter of pace and timing. The content of the poem is really a travelogue mostly to places where there is an intersection between ancient and contemporary worlds. Reweaving the Great Round: a winter solstice story by Sara Wright

Photo by Sara Wright The scent of balsam wafts through the room as I cut the boughs to make my annual wreath to honor all trees, those that still stand, those who are slaughtered. My intention each year is twofold – acknowledge my love for these sentient beings and to participate in the unfolding of the Great Round. Other intentions vary from year to year until recently when a prayer for protection from the dark forces that permeate the psyches of so many peoples of this earth becomes a yearly part of this winter ceremony, even as a multitude of others suffer intolerable losses. Today’s American culture creates endless non-religious festivals to celebrate the entrance into this winter season that are totally devoid of meaning beyond consumerism – buy more ‘stuff’ – chop down more trees. These devourers can never be satiated because the chasm is too wide and deep. The Christians celebrate Jesus’s birth although he was born in the spring, revealing the ‘religious’ obsession of turning dark into light to rid those folks of the true meaning of this season. Sorrowfully, I note new agers follow suit with winter solstice ‘celebrations’, and their ‘cosmic coming of the light’. Once I did this too, but nature intervened making it clear that I was on the wrong track (the return of the light comes in February) Jung once said that ‘fairy tales are pure products of nature’. What we now know from painstaking scholarship that Jung was right. Some of the original fairy tales are thousands of years old and were passed down by the oral tradition by preliterate peoples in Europe. They are an important part of our European heritage some stretching back to the bronze age or beyond. Like most oral traditions no one knows for sure. To complicate matters in today’s world more recent Greek and Celtic myths (among others) are often re-written by feminists to suit the needs of the writer. Of course, this approach has merit but the problem with this reconfiguring is that the original messages are buried or lost. One fairy tale comes to mind to demonstrate the importance of having adequate protection from the ‘cold’. Rose Red/Rose White befriend a bear who comes into the house and sleeps by the fire every night to protect the family from the dangerous forces that come to life during the darkest months of the year. In the spring when he leaves, much to the sorrow of the children, the bear, a powerful animal (instinctual?) protector, becomes a man who has a brother. Both marry the girls. There are several versions of this story, but the core message is the same. Befriending the bear provides the girls and their mother with the protection they need from ‘winter’ and eventually the bear is integrated into the instinctual female psyche as a positive male force. What interests me is that Indigenous peoples throughout the northern hemisphere also acknowledge the bear as a powerful root healer and protector in all their stories. This entrance into the darkest months of the year brings us to the edge of what we think we know. In the northern hemisphere three months of deep cold are ahead. Acknowledged or not, our own deaths, and the deaths of those non – human beings around us are uppermost in our minds. Nature is mirroring human chaos by demonstrating that the next seasonal round will be darker still with unpredictable weather. Political insanity looms and yet we continue to deny… we cling to false hope with grizzled claws refusing to let go. Our earliest Indigenous stories inform us that this is the season to acknowledge the element of fire – that which warms us, that which destroys. Indigenous and country people in some cultures still wear masks to help protect them from dark forces, and at the same time acknowledge the reality that individual and collective shadow elements are on the move. The powers of fire burn too hot even as earth’s temperature drops. When will we acknowledge that our mechanistic cultural shadow has become demonic? Do we even notice that the images we see of ourselves have become cartoons? These thoughts and questions swirl around me as I weave my wreath returning my thoughts to The Great Round – those of abundance and attrition. Beginning with gratitude for my beloved dogs, bird, Animal Healer and close friends I weave my personal prayers into this Circle. I ask to stay awake, provide support for those like me who live unpalatable truths. And yes, I give thanks for Life even as I acknowledge my fears. I follow the Seasons of the Great Round (Winter solstice, February’s First Light, Spring Equinox, May Day, Summer solstice, August’s Feast of the New Grain, Fall Equinox, All Hallows). I have learned over half a lifetime that the eight turnings of the year are fluid, exact days don’t matter, timing does, so I pay attention to Nature’s nudges and let natural forces determine just when and how I need to highlight these turnings. This year, as is my custom, I tipped my greens the day before the first snow/ice in November but only last week wove my Wreath for Life. My Medicine Wheel is tucked away in the darkest corner of the room. The four elements, four directions, the cranes that create the circle with bodies and beaks, red feet rooted into rich dark earth seem to be crying out for further attention. Feeling that nudge sends me out to gather more greens which I then wove in between starry lights. I placed spiral shells on the shelf just below the wheel wondering about the call from the sea, built a fire in the stove and watched Winter Moon rise high in the sky circled by stars…The dogs and I curled up on the couch in front of the warm fire grateful for the heat. While I’m in the midst of appropriating all of the wonderful beliefs I find here, I also have found a strand in my own tradition that helps me understand why all the Divine Feminine stuff makes so much sense to me. I’ve been trying to determine when the patriarchal world view took over. According to this history, mysticism began to emerge in about 800 to 500 BCE. Could it be that mysticism kept alive the ancient understanding of the cosmos? This is just speculation, but in it I’m answering my own questions. Now when dying grasses veil earth from the sky in one last pale wave, as autumn dies to bring winter back, and then the spring, we who die ourselves can peel back another kind of veil that hangs among us like thick smoke. Tonight at last I feel it shake. I feel the nights stretching away thousands long behind the days, till they reach the darkness where all of me is ancestor. I turn my hand and feel a touch move with me, and when I brush my young mind across another, I have met my mother’s mother. Mago Almanac: 13 Month 28 Day Calendar (Book A) at Mago Bookstore. YEARLY LEAP DAY AND EVERY FOURTH YEAR LEAP DAY Each Sa includes a Dan of the big Sa. A Dan is equal to one day. That adds to 365 days. At the half point of the third Sa, there is a Pan of the big Sak (the year of the great dark moon). A Pan comes at a half point of Sa. This is of Beopsu (Lawful Number) 2, 5, 8. A Pan is equal to a day. Therefore, the fourth Sa has 366 days. Each year has a leap day (Dan), which makes a total of 365 days. Every fourth year is a leap year that has a leap day (Pan), which makes a total of 366 days. The Dan day comes before the New Year in the winter solstice month. And the Pan day comes before the first day of the summer solstice month in the fourth year. The above, however, does not indicate when the New Year comes. Logographic characters of Dan and Pan each suggest their meanings. While each year includes the Dan day (the morning), every fourth year has the Pan day. A unit of four years makes the Big Calendar. Dan (旦 Morning) Leap day for every first three years Pan (昄 Big) Leap day for every fourth year I have postulated that the year begins on the Dan day (one leap day), a day before New Year that comes in the month of Winter Solstice in the Norther Hemisphere. And the Pan day comes on the day before the first day of the 7th month that has Summer Solstice in the fourth year in the Norther Hemisphere. That is, each year has one extra day to make it 365 days. Every fourth year has an extra day to make it 366 days. Four years has a total of 1461 days (365×3+366), which makes the mean of 365.25 days. Considering that the month is following the sidereal period rather than the synodic period, it is inferred that the year also follows the sidereal year rather than the solar year. In fact, Magoist Calendar’s one year is very close to today’s 365.25636 days of the sidereal year compared to 365.24217 days of the solar year or the tropical year. Given that, as seen below, the Budoji mentions the tiniest discrepancy of one leap day for 31,788,900 years, the discrepancy between 365.25 and 365.25636 (0.00636 day) can be explained that the year was actually 365.25 days at the time of Budo circa 2333 BCE, 4440 years ago. In other words, there is a discrepancy of 0.12375936 seconds between 2017 CE and 2333 BCE. Regarding Lawful Numbers 2, 5, 8, it is involved as follows: 365 days (3+6+5=14, 1+4=5) Lawful Numbers 2, 5, 8 refers the unit of 365 days (364 days with one intercalary day). Further dynamics are unknown. The sidereal year refers to the time taken by the Earth to orbit the sun once with respect to the distant stars. In contrast, the solar or tropical year means the time taken by the Earth to orbit the sun once with respect to the sun. The sidereal year, 365.25636 days, is about 20 minutes and 24 seconds longer than the mean tropical year (365.24217 days) and about 19 minutes and 57 seconds longer than the average Gregorian year of 365.2425 days. The difference occurs primarily because the solar system spins on its own axis and around the Milky Way galactic center making the solar year’s observed position relative. Time is no independent concept apart from space and the agent. The very concept of time is preceded by the agent bound in a space. It is always contextualized. In Magoism, both calendar and time are born out of the cosmogonic universe, the universe that is in self-creation. Like calendar, time is to be discovered or measured. It is a numinous concept. The very concept of time testifies to the reality of the Creatrix. Time proves the orderly movement of the universe into which we are born. Calendar patterns time, whereas time undergirds calendar. How can we measure time? We are given the time of the Earth that comes from its rotation, revolution, and precession in sync with the moon and the sun (and its planets). One type of time is the solar time. The solar time is a calculation of time based on the position of the sun. Traditionally, the solar time is measured by the sundial. The solar time is, however, specific to the Earth only. It is valid only for the-same-observed-location. It is not made to be used for the time of another celestial body. For example, Mars’ solar time has to be measured independently based on its own rotation and revolution rates. The solar time is an isolated time. It is static and exclusive, not made for the time of other celestial bodies. By nature, it is unfit for connection and communication across celestial bodies. The second type is the sidereal time. The sidereal time is a time scale based on the rate of Earth’s rotations measured relative to the distant stars.[29] Because the observed position is in the far distant stars beyond the solar system, the sidereal time may as well be called an extrasolar stellar time. We can think of the observer’s position of an imaginary cosmic bird far out there, infinitely far beyond not only the solar system and …
(Prose) Desire: the Wheel of Her Creativity by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an edited excerpt from the concluding chapter (Chapter 8) of the author’s book PaGaian Cosmology: Re-inventing Earth-based Goddess Religion. Place of Being is a passionate place, where desire draws forth what is sought, co-creates what is needed[1]; within a con-text – a story – where love of self, other and all-that-is are indistinguishable … they are nested within each other and so is the passion for being. I begin to understand desire afresh: this renewed understanding has been an emergent property of the religious practice of seasonal celebration: that is, the religious practice of the ceremonial celebration of Her Creativity. It has been said She is “that which is attained at the end of desire[2].” Within the context of ceremonial engagement and inner search for Her, I begin to realize how desire turns the Wheel. As the light part of the cycle waxes from Early Spring, form/life builds in desire. At Beltaine/High Spring, desire runs wild, at Summer Solstice, it peaks into creative fullness, union … and breaks open at that interchange into the dark part of the cycle – the dissolution of Lammas/ Late Summer. She becomes the Dark One, who receives us back – the end of desire. It has been a popular notion in the Christian West, that the beautiful virgin lures men (sic) to their destruction, and as I perceive the Wheel, it is indeed Virgin who moves in Her wild delight towards entropy/dissolution; however in a cosmology that is in relationship with the dark, this is not perceived as a negative thing. Also, in this cosmology, there is the balancing factor of the Crone’s movement towards new life, in the conceiving dark space of Samhain/Deep Autumn – a dynamic and story that has not been a popular notion in recent millennia. Desire seems not so much a grasping, as a receiving, an ability or capacity to open and dissolve. I think of an image of an open bowl as a signifier of the Virgin’s gift. The increasing light is received, and causes the opening, which will become a dispersal of form – entropy, if you like: this is Beltaine/High Spring – the Desire[3]that is celebrated is a movement towards dis-solution … that is its direction. In contrast, and in balance, Samhain/Deep Autumn celebrates re-solution, which is a movement towards form – it is a materializing gathering into form, as the increasing darkness is received. It seems it is darkness that creates form, as it gathers into itself – as many ancient stories say, and it is light that creates dispersal. And yet I see that the opposite is true also. I think of how there is desire for this work that I have done, for whatever one does – it is then already being received. Desire is receiving. What if I wrote this, and it was not received or welcomed in some way. But the desire for it is already there, and perhaps the desire made it manifest. Perhaps the desire draws forth manifestation, even at Winter Solstice, even at Imbolc/Early Spring, as we head towards Beltaine – it is desire that is drawing that forth, drawing that process around. Desire is already receiving; it is open. Its receptivity draws forth the manifestation. And then the manifestation climaxes at Summer and dissolves into the manifesting, which is perhaps where the desire is coming from – the desire is in the darkness, in the dark’s receptivity[4]. It becomes very active at the time of Beltaine, it lures the differentiated beings back into Her. So the lure at Beltaine is the luring of differentiated beings into a Holy Lust, into a froth and dance of life, whereupon they dissolve ecstatically back into Her – She is “that which is attained at the end of Desire.” And in the dissolution, we sink deeper into that, and begin again. All the time, it is Desire that is luring the manifest into the manifesting, and the manifesting into the manifest. Passion is the glue, the underlying dynamic that streams through it all – through the light and the dark, through the creative triplicities of Virgin-Mother-Crone, of Differentiation-Communion-Autopoeisis[5]. Passion/Desire then is worthy of much more contemplation. If desire/allurement is the same cosmic dynamic as gravity, as cosmologist Brian Swimme suggests[6], then desire like gravity is the dynamic that links/holds us to our Place, to “that which is”, as philosopher Linda Holler describes the effect of gravity[7]. Held in relationship by desire/allurement we lose abstraction and artificial boundaries, and “become embodied and grow heavy with the weight of the earth[8].” We then know that “being is being-in relation-to”[9]. Holler says that when we think with the weight of Earth, space becomes “thick” as this “relational presence … turns notes into melodies, words into phrases with meaning, and space into vital forms with color and content, (and) also holds the knower in the world[10].”Thus, I at last become a particular, a subject, a felt being in the world – a Place laden with content, sentient: continuous with other and all-that-is. Mago Almanac: 13 Month 28 Day Calendar (Book A) Free PDF available at Mago Bookstore. THE 28-13-7 INTERPLAY How does the number, 28 (days), for the lunar cycle come about? Why is it 28 days and not 29 or 30, the latter implicated in the traditional lunar calendar of East Asia? It appears that 28 days is a value closer to the moon’s sidereal period (about 27.3 days) than the synodic period (about 29.5 days). Or is it that 28 days points to the median between the synodic lunar cycle and the sidereal lunar cycle? To answer these questions, it is important to note that a value in the Mago Time captures an inter-cosmic biological cusp/juncture derived from the matrix of sonic numerology. Distinguished from the patriarchal measure of time fixated into a solipsistic space, it makes visible the interconnectedness of all bodies. It never stands as an isolated single occasion. The 28 day, 13 month calendar has to do with how we perceive the moon. There are two ways of understanding the lunar cycle; the sidereal period and the synodic period (see Figure 2). The synodic period refers to the time, about 29.5 days, that we on earth see the moon complete one round of revolution, e.g. from the full moon to the full moon. In contrast, the sidereal period refers to the actual time, about 27.3 days, that the moon takes to complete one round of revolution. While the synodic time is measured relative to the Earth (the observer’s position is on earth), the sidereal time is measured relative to the distant “fixed” stars (the observer’s position is far out at the distant stars). Since the distant stars are considered at rest, the sidereal period is taken as a universal value, not affected by the location of the viewer, we on earth. There is, apparently, a discrepancy between the lunar cycle that we on earth see the moon return to the same phase and the lunar cycle that the moon actually completes a revolution. The former is based on our observation of the moon’s phases, whereas the latter is based on the moon’s actual orbital motions. The two differs basically because all celestial bodies, the moon, earth, and sun, in the solar system are in motion. It is not just the moon that we watch revolving but Earth also revolves around the sun. We are watching the movement of the moon on a moving vehicle, earth, so to speak. Therefore, the moon has to travel about 2 more days in order for us on earth to see it in the same phase (see the green portion in Figure 2 part). At the position A of the moon in Figure 2, the moon is in line with the sun and the distant stars, which is a new moon. In the position of B (the new moon), the moon is in line with the sun but not with the distant stars. The right hand line of the green portion in line with the distant stars is where the moon started as a new moon. The moon has traveled about 2 more days to be in line with the sun. That is why the synodic period is about 2 days longer than the sidereal period. When it comes to “the lunar calendar”, moderns tend to think of it as the waxing and waning phases of the moon (29.5 days, the synodic period). The problem lies in that, following the synodic period, people see nothing beyond the moon’s phases. They overlook the fact that the moon rotates and revolves on its own axis and around the earth approximately 13 degrees every day. The synodic lunisolar calendar is a navel-gazing vision. Attending to the moon’s phases may seem benign. However, that is a planned pitfall; the synodic lunisolar calendar with 12 months in a year is here to supersede the 28 day, 13 month gynocentric calendar. Its irregularity with the number of days in a month (29 or 30 days with about 11 extra days for intercalation) is an inherently critical flaw. Its inaccuracy when incorporated within the solar annual calendar (approximately 365.25 days) stands out. Seen below in the table, the synodic lunar track results in as many leap days as a total of 44 days for 4 years, whereas the sidereal lunar track has 2 days for 4 years. The synodic lunisolar calendar undercuts the moon’s given capacity – guiding earthly beings into the intergalactic voyage of WE/HERE/NOW. In it, both the moon and women are, glorified and objectified by the viewer, cast under the male voyeuristic eye. On the contrary, the sidereal lunisolar calendar, based on the cyclic synchrony between the moon and women, offers the lens to the interconnectedness of all bodies in the universe. Through the comparative study of ancient cultures of Babylon, Arabia, India and China, W. B. Yeats (1865-1939) observes the substantive difference in dynamic between the two lunation tracks, the synodic and the sidereal. He notes that the moon’s orbital motion, apart from the sun’s, charts out the celestial sphere as the 28 Mansions. I have learned that the 28 Mansions or 28 Constellations of the Moon is a popular form of the 28 day and 13 month Magoist calendar, widely circulated among East Asians especially Koreans from the ancient time. A Southern Hemisphere Perspective on Place by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an edited excerpt from the Introduction to the author’s book PaGaian Cosmology: Re-inventing Earth-based Goddess Religion, which was an outcome of her doctoral research/thesis entitled The Female Metaphor – Virgin, Mother, Crone – of the Dynamic Cosmological Unfolding: Her Embodiment in Seasonal Ritual as Catalyst for Personal and Cultural Change. This doctoral work was in turn a documentation and deeper research of the Seasonal ceremonial celebrations that the author was already engaged in for over a decade. The whole of the process is here named as her “Search”. photo credit: David Widdowson, Astrovisuals. The site of seasonal ceremonial celebrations will always be significant. In my case, the place in which I have created them has been notably in the Southern Hemisphere of out Planet Earth. The fact of my context being thus – the Southern Hemisphere – had contributed in the past to my deep internalized sense of being “other”, and dissociated from my senses, since almost all stories told were based in Northern Hemisphere perspective. Yet at the same time this context of inhabiting the Southern Hemisphere contributed to my deep awareness of Gaia’s Northern Hemisphere and Her reciprocal Seasonal Moment: thus, awareness of the whole Planet. My initial confusion about the sensed Cosmos – as a Place, became a clarity about the actual Cosmos – which remained inclusive of my sensed Cosmos. PaGaian reality – the reality of our Gaian “country” – is that the whole Creative Dynamic happens all the time, all at once. The “other”, the opposite, is always present – underneath and within the Moment. This has affected my comprehension of each Sabbat/Seasonal Moment, its particular beauty but also a fullness of its transitory nature. Many in the Northern Hemisphere – even today – have no idea that the Southern Hemisphere has a ‘different’ lunar, diurnal, seasonal perspective; and because of this there often is a rigidity of frame of reference for place, language, metaphor and hence cosmology[i]. Indeed over the years of industrialized culture it has appeared to matter less to many of both hemispheres, including the ‘author-ities’, the writers of culture and cosmos. And such ‘author-ity’ and northern-hemispheric rigidity is also assumed by many more Earth-oriented writers as well[ii]. There has been consistent failure to take into account a whole Earth perspective: for example, the North Star does not need to be the point of sacred reference – there is great Poetry to be made of the void of the South Celestial Pole. Nor need the North be rigidly associated with the Earth element and darkness, nor is there really an “up” and a “down” cosmologically speaking. A sense and accountof the Southern Hemisphere perspective with all that that implies metaphorically as well as sens-ibly, seems vitally important to comprehending and sensing a whole perspective and globe – a flexibility of mind, and coming to inhabit the real Cosmos, hence enabling what I have named as a ‘PaGaian’ cosmological perspective, a whole Earth perspective. It has also been of particular significance that my Search has been birthed in the ancient continent of Australia. It is the age of the exposed rock in this Land, present to her inhabitants in an untarnished, primal mode that is significant. This Land Herself has for millennia been largely untouched by human war, conquest and concentrated human agriculture and disturbance. The inhabitants of this Land dwelt here in a manner that was largely peaceful and harmonious, for tens of thousands of years. Therefore the Land Herself may speak more clearly I feel; one may be the recipient of direct transmission of Earth in one of her most primordial modes. Her knowledge may be felt more clearly – one may be taught by Her. I think that the purity of this transmission is a significant factor in the development of the formal research I undertook – in my chosen methodology and in what I perceived in the process, and documented; from my beginnings as a country girl, albeit below my conscious mind in the subtle realms of which I knew little, to the more conscious times of entering into the process of the Search. In this Land that birthed me, ‘spirit’ is not remote and abstract, it is felt in Her red earth[iii]. Aboriginal elder David Mowaljarlai described, “This is a spirit country”[iv], and all of Her inhabitants, including non-Indigenous, may be affected by the strength of Her organic communication. It took me until the later stages of my research to realize the need to state the importance of this particular place for the advent of the research: the significance of both the land of Australia, and the specific region of the Blue Mountains in which I was now dwelling, as well as the community of this particular region, which all lent itself to the whole process. The lateness of this perception on my part, has to do with the extent of my previous alienation; but the fact that it did occur, is perhaps at least in part attributable to the unfolding awakening to my habitat that was part of the project/process. The specific region of the “Blue Mountains” – as Europeans have named them – is significant in that I don’t think that this project/process could have happened as it did in just any region. David Abram says, “The singular magic of a place is evident from what happens there, from what befalls oneself or others when in its vicinity. My graduate education, which I crafted to be a feminist cross-cultural alchemical process of de-educating myself from the patriarchal mode of knowledge-making, led me to encounter the hitherto unheard-of Goddess of East Asia, Mago. I came to read the Budoji, the principal text of Magoism, in 2000 and did some basic research to find out that Mago was known among people in Korea and that S/HE was also found in Chinese and Japanese sources.

Part 5: Magoist Cosmology “The primary aim of Magoist cosmology lies in lifting up the conceptual veil in people’s mind so that they can see what is given at birth.” [This is a translation and interpretation of the Budoji (Epic of the Emblem City), principal text of Magoism. Read the translation of Chapter 1 of the Budoji.] Magoist cosmology: Magoist cosmology, knowing of the female principle of Magoist cosmogony (story of the Female Beginning), reconstitutes, heals, and maintains the original vision of gynocentric soteriology. Its primary function is to guide humanity according to the law of nature whereby all things are born and evolve into their greatest potential. In short, Magoist cosmology is a gynocentric mode of thinking that shows the Way of all beings. By extension, it is an inherent principle of nature- and women-honoring civilizations. I suggest Magoist cosmology, underpinning of the Magoist cosmogony, as an antidote to the detriments of patriarchal consciousness. Its female principle restores the original unity among all entities, which has been thwarted by patriarchal cosmologies. Comprising the most foundational program of human consciousness, so constitutive that no one is born without it, Magoist cosmology is ever active and accessible to people. Nonetheless, it is made dormant in the conscious mind of people under patriarchal cultures. Thus, the primary aim of Magoist cosmology lies in lifting up the conceptual veil in people’s mind so that they can see what is given at birth.

Part I Multivalent Meaning of Mago Stronghold Mago Stronghold (麻姑城, Mago-seong) refers to the center of the world (axis mundi) in the Magoist Cosmogony. It is a metaphor for the Source/Origin/Womb of Life for terrestrial beings. Mago Stronghold represents the forgotten paradise of the Great Goddess in patriarchy. In patriarchal times, it has become a code to unlock the hidden S/HE Reality. As one’s life in the body and mind is the very proof for the first mother, “Mago,” from whom one comes, the existence of Mago Stronghold in toponym and meaning is the very token to prove vital for the primordial home of terrestrial beings, also called the Earth. The Mago Stronghold talk, upon being fully deciphered, merits the bird’s eye view of human history from the cosmogonic beginning of the Great Goddess to this day. Its message is, among others, we are NOT locked out from the blissful time of S/HE beginning. We are NOT disconnected from our ancestors and deities. And we are NOT substantively different from our non-human sojourns. All in WE are found in Mago Stronghold. I present my investigation of Mago Stronghold, rather than a new theory, as an alternative mode of perceiving reality. The Mago Stronghold talk answers the ultimate question of “who I am” as a person and why we are here in our life journey. It is meant to engender metamorphosis, the process of awakening and navigating in S/HE Reality, for both an individual and the collective. We realize that no one is bound to patriarchal reality except those who create it. WE are HERE/NOW. However, the full-fledged implication of Mago Stronghold can’t be unveiled without naming the systemic working of mental blocks and lifting the limit. Official (read patriarchal) historiography is not the place where we nest our conversation. Linear thinking can’t help us arrive at the Scene. Thinking within ethnocentric and nationalist grids is among the mental blocks. We are invited to explore a whole new/old/original way of seeing and knowing matters. You and I across cultures, nationalities, and geographies have a lot in common to talk and think about. Precisely, the Mago Stronghold talk bridges the gap among moderns. Its implication is NOT confined to Korea or East Asia. One may wonder how it is so? The concept of Mago Stronghold, remembered by East Asian Magoists, concerns the common origin of all beings on Earth. Discourse on the Great Goddess/Primordial Mother/Creatrix can’t be parochial by nature. It maps out the gynocentric consciousness of WE, which redefines national/cultural identities as consanguineous. The Mago Stronghold talk works at multi-dimensions crisscrossing and connecting the personal and the collective, the local and the universal, and the physical and the symbolic. Mago Stronghold found across Korea and China is no ordinary cultural or historical landmark. It is also equated with Mago Mountain or Triad Mountain. The extant toponym of Mago Stronghold is a door to the Other Realm of the Great Goddess. Precisely, it signifies the Primordial/Perennial Home for not only the Mago Clan (Mago and HER divine and human descendants) but also all terrestrial beings, according to the Magoist Cosmogony. “Mago Stronghold” is an eponym for such socio-natural-architectural variations as castles, citadels, mountain villages, fortresses, stone walls, earthen walls, and ultimately the Earth. It is etiological, explaining the gynocentric origin of the axis mundi and the sacred mountain reverence known in many ancient worlds. Macrocosmically, Mago Stronghold refers to the Earth, the Splendid Land of the Primordial Mother. Residing in the Big Dipper (Seven Stars),[1] Mago governs the solar system and chooses the Earth as HER Garden.[2] S/HE delegates HER divine and human offspring to cultivate sonic resonance in harmony with cosmic music. In that sense, Earth IS HER Civilization. Its literal meaning, the Stronghold of the Great Goddess, conveys that all Earth’s civilizations are born of the Great Goddess. The Mago Civilization of Earth is aligned with the Law of Nature established by the marvelous working of the Great Goddess. Nature reflects HER Majestic Work. When the Creatrix (Cosmogonic Matrix) is made unthinkable, if not erased, in the course of patriarchal mytho-history, Mago Stronghold stands as an enigmatic cultural icon. It comes to us as a code to decipher. Much is to be unveiled for HER Paradise to be reinstated in the collective mind of humanity. Euphemisms that are severed from the Magoist implication in the course of history are linked back to the original Magoist words. The Mago Stronghold Code enchants us to the holistic view of the Great Goddess, the WE consciousness in S/HE, that is tabooed in patriarchy. Reminding people of the common origin from the Primordial Mother, Mago Stronghold opens a new horizon of the gynocentric reality, WE/HERE/NOW. We have been part of the Grand Plan of the Great Goddess. When it comes to the female, official historiography, which is after all a product of the patriarchal dominant group, offers little to, if not obstructs, the researcher. The history it calls is nothing other than a self-aggrandizing distorted view of the past events, or rather an imposed false view of the past by patriarchal colonizers. Patriarchal history should be called pseudo-history. It concerns not truth but domination and self-expansion. The history of self-sharers/altruists/Magoists never dies for it is about re-membering of all in WE. What happened is never left unanimated, according to the Law of Nature. It can’t be erased, for truth is the language of Life. As such, the collective memory that ancient (read pre-patriarchal) Magoists were the bearers of the Magoist royal lineage has survived official East Asian (read Sinocentric) historiography. It is imbued in such socio-cultural data as lore, literature, art, and place-names, as well as the so-called apocryphal texts. My task here is to decode the meaning of Mago Stronghold, unearthing non-official data and reading them between the lines of written records.
